Food Delivery Bike Riders on Sydney Harbour Bridge Cycleway

Seriously has anyone cycled the SHB cycle path lately? In the evenings in particular it's insane, 30+ food delivery bike riders in a row are doing laps of the cycle path. They get to the end and then turn around and go back.

The security guy reckons the bridge cycle path is classified as a highway in the app so they earn more?

Anyone know? The congestion is getting pretty hefty and an accident waiting to happen.

Nothing to see here…. Economic plan is working

If it's a cycling path and they're cycling on it then I don't see any issues….

What great timing for this.. I actually noticed this on Thursday afternoon.. as i was approaching the north side, there were 3 delivery riders ahead of me that appear to be known to each other.. they got right before the stairs and all three simply done a u-turned.. the last guy was lagging a bit and seemed to think it was funny as he turned - like a new experience..
I sometimes go have a kick around with my boys on the old bowling green just to the side of the stairs there and have noticed a couple of regular riders who congregate there sitting on their mobiles.. they just hang around there for a fair while (30+ minimum) which i also think was a bit unusual.

I assume they cant be earning nothing if they aren't carrying anything.. so no idea what the motive is.. I assume they want to be earning $$ delivering food, and the money they earn would not be based on how far they travel, rather what the app considers to be the distance from point A to point B.

Interesting thought though on what the motivation behind it is… hope we get some insider views from people in the know..

Maybe the extra highway $ kicks in if they accept a job whilst on the bridge?

Gaming the system!. As long as they arent trvelling at warp speed on ebikes what is the issue?

  • oh look.. cyclists complaining about other cyclists getting in their way!

They are riding about 10kmph in a sloped section which is effectively a blind corner, and doing u-turns when they get too far south (towards the city). If you're headed northbound and are holding a lot of speed downhill, it's like coming across a stationary object with very little warning, or alternatively someone headed southbound has tried to overtake just as you're coming around. Bright lights of some riders (and limited/nil lights on others) adds to the roulette - by probability someone is going to get hurt pretty badly given enough time, and I've seen a very near miss as well (whilst that was due to a really bad decision by that rider, I can see an accident happening quite naturally).
