Thermal Label Printer Basic Info Please?

I've searched other forum posts but can't find anything that addresses this.

Are there any of the thermal label printers in the $50ish range that readily handle the generic labels?

We have a Brother PTouch, plus a niimbot d110, both of which require their own labels to be used, but both of which do their job well. EDIT: Both only take narrow tape, not the 50mm labels I am wanting to be able to make.

I'm contemplating getting a Niimbot b21, to be able to print up to around 50mm labels, but before I do am wondering if there's a better option with regard to the issue with labels please? I don't need to be able to print huge shipping labels or anything like that, it's basically just for personal use, being able to do up to 50mm waterproof labels etc.

  • Brother TZe tape is their high-performance material, water and temperature resistant. If your use-case is labelling stuff for ID purposes, this is going to be one of your better options.

  • Hey, OP, which P-Touch have you got, and what operating system is the PC you've got it connected to using.

I had a P-Touch 1230PC for years and only used it very occasionally. One day I tried to use it and just got error messages about some sort of communication problem when I pressed print. There was this story on the interweb that said that's what you get when you use 3rd-party tapes. When I established that probably wasn't true I assumed it was just broken after not being used for a long time. And having been happy with it I went and bought a new PT-P700. Only it gives me the same communications error problem. Except …. they both work perfectly on Windows 7. Just not on ANY of my Windows 10 or 11 PCs.

Tried to get support from Brother. It was like bashing my head against a brick wall. They just refused to believe their product, which they sell as working on W7, W10 or W11 worked on W7, but wouldn't work on ANY W10 or W11 PC I had. They wanted to "fix" the ONE it wouldn't work on. I tried downloading and running all the diagnostic software they told me to, and all just produced the same communications error.

I just wanted to be able to plug it into any PC handy, and have it work. Do you have yours working on W10 or W11?

    • My Brother label maker is just a very basic handheld one, doesn't hook up to anything. It also only handles narrow tape, so not what I am needing.
