Absolutely ridiculous. Waiting for the "yeah but you haven't used them" brigade
I own plenty of old Hue. They're good but the price is silly now.
Looks like the "it's a robbery" and "it's too expensive" brigade arrived first 🤣
Things are valued differently by different people. At 45% off compared to local shops, it's a good deal.
Agreed; the quality is good and they’re reliable, especially compared to other HomeKit-compatible (when you have the bridge) options.
Whilst I don’t love having to run a separate network and would prefer Thread, I’d rather that than wifi lights.
Yeah this is ridiculously expensive. I have Philips Hue lights with that annoying extra bridge, they were all the rage before there was real competition for considerably less.
The "annoying" extra bridge is there so you can control your lights even if your internet is down. It's also there so you can control your lights (with Hue dimmer switches) even when your Wi-Fi is down. It's also there so you don't have a hundred extra devices on your Wi-Fi network. It's also there to crate a ZigBee mesh allowing you to have and control lights/sensors that may be out of reach of your Wi-Fi network.
What's the affordable HomeKit alternative to these? Open to using HA but want them to be reliable.
The key word is "reliable". That's why I stick with Hue.
What's your cutout size and ceiling height?
I have a 70mm cutout.
If you had a 90mm cutout you could replace the whole luminaire (e.g. Philips Garnea, LIFX Downlight). I gather there are 70mm options but from brands that aren't familiar to me. I asked about celing height because the Hue downlight globes offer narrower beams which suits higher ceilings. I converted two of my 12V MR16 downlight fittings to 240V Hue GU10. Hue does make an MR16 bulb but it's somewhat more expensive. My Hue lights sometimes glitch in Homekit but I'm otherwise happy with their reliability.
Nanoleaf are affordable and use Thread, but seem to have reliability issues.
Great bulbs but way too expensive at the moment.
With Hue getting a price hike worldwide in February last year, sadly they won't get any cheaper.
For what’s it worth, 2 pack white is $39.12 at Amazon just now. I’ve bought for use where you don’t need to disco.

You might consider "white ambiance" version. I have a lot of those and it's nice to have different colour temperatures/shades of white, especially in the evenings when you want a more relaxing "warm" white. Not much more expensive per bulb, pack of 3 https://www.amazon.com.au/Philips-Hue-White-Ambiance-Spotlig…
Do we expect to see better Hue discounts during the July Prime Dale sale, or these EOY sales are about as good as we can expect?
$99 for a ZigBee module and some LEDs is highway robbery at its finest…
