Anyone Signed up to Optus for a Device and Then Cancelled?

Hi, I'm thinking of signing up to an optus plan to get their current 50% off Google Pixel Pro 8 price.

However, I don't want to stay with Optus.

Has anyone signed up to a plan to get a cheap device and then cancelled and moved to another service? If so, have any trouble?

Pay out remainder of purchase price if you cancel early.

    From the CIS:

You need a compatible mobile phone device to use with this plan. You may bring your own compatible device, or buy a compatible device from us outright or with this plan on a device payment plan and pay for it over a selected term by interest free monthly payments. You’ll need to remain on an eligible plan for the term of your device payment plan. If your device payment plan is cancelled, you’ll need to pay out any remaining device payments in full and any applicable device credits or discounts will be forfeited.

You should dug a bit deeper mate…. "The discount will be forfeited if the customer cancels, recontracts or changes to an ineligible plan and the customer will have to pay out the full cost of the device on a pro-rata basis, excluding the device discount Optus was going to cover."

    https://www.optus.com.au/mobile/phones/google/pixel-8-pro

Device discount offer: Available to Consumer and Business customers who sign up or recontract and stay connected to an eligible mobile SIM plan and purchase this device on a 24 or 36 month device payment plan. Discount applied over length of payment plan selected and applied from the first invoice for the device payment. The discount will be forfeited if the customer cancels, recontracts or changes to an ineligible plan and the customer will have to pay out the full cost of the device on a pro-rata basis, excluding the device discount Optus was going to cover. N/A with other device discount offers unless specified. Limit 5 device discounts per account. See above for offer end date. If no date is specified, the offer is available until withdrawn.

  • I did as part of this deal - I never activated (I didn't transfer my current number) and cancelled via chat straightaway - had to wait for the billing cycle to end before I got my invoice. When I got the invoice they had attempted to charge me for the entire first month ($69) and the maximum cancellation fee (which was calculated at half of the plan cost of $1656 - i.e. $828) had a bit of back and forth trying to convince them their own contract says that the maximum fee is $828 and it also doesn't make sense to charge me $69 for the first month and then $34.50 in cancellation fees for the same month. Eventually had to threaten TIO before I got it sorted.

However, as per the above post it seems that Optus has wised up to this tactic (or you can't do the same thing directly with Optus).
