How's this monitor for photo editing? Good enough?

    • +5

Depends how picky you are. It's a decent quality budget productivity monitor, but was never designed for colour-accurate photography work.

In summary: fine for family snaps and casual use. If you're professional photographer, you should spend a lot more to get a decent wide-gamut monitor.

      • +1

        Thanks, though I'm still unsure.

My use case is somewhere in between casual and professional. I'm a hobbyist wildlife photographer. I'll be using the monitor mainly for editing RAW files in Lightroom. I mostly post online but do occasional prints too.

I've always used sRGB and have had no issues editing on my laptop (1600p @ 100% sRGB), but obviously could do with a larger screen. Is there any need to display a wider gamut than 99% sRGB (which this Dell apparently can) if I'm happy with the results I'm already getting?

        • +1

Honestly if you're happy with sRGB then it sounds like this Dell would be a great monitor for you. As an amateur/hobbyist, a wide-gamut screen is nice to have but not mandatory, and they usually cost 2-3x more.

In a few years' time, OLED screens will have come down in price and that would be a good opportunity to pick up a nice wide-gamut OLED monitor, it will give you even greater enjoyment of your images.

    299 is for tax time…

    • +2

Yes! Any current deals that are $299?

  • -6

60hz on a 4k panel just seems odd to me

    • +19

What do you mean? This would be fine for office use, this obviosuly isnt a gaming monitor

      • -4

Why would you need 4k for an office

        • +6

          More clarity when reading documents.

        • +3

Being able to split the screen into multiple portions without risking those portions becoming unreadable is huge.

    • +2

Mate, you won't get higher rate for that size at that price.

    • +5

Such a useless comment, not sure what you are trying to say. If you were saying 60hz is too low on 4K or better off getting 120hz on 2k or whatever, all bullshit without saying your odd usecase and the price.

  • Does anyone know what's like in the dell refurnished section? All the fault has been fixed and just selling for a slight cheaper price? Thanks!!!

    • +4

They just re-arrange the room and dim the lights to improve the mood ;)

Seriously, it will be fine - should look brand new. Warranty would be the same unless stated.

    • Recently ordered a refurbished monitor without stand from them. It arrived in full retail packaging, looked brand new, and even had the stand in it!

  • +6

    I have this. Great monitor

    • How does the connection work? Does the monitor provide power to a laptop over the same cable that it's sending the signal over?

      • +2

That’s correct. Just use the provided USB-C cable

        • Do you happen to know if these work with m1 Macbooks?

          • +1

            @DeToxin: I'd be surprised if it didn't!

edit: someone else in the comments mentioned they use this monitor with an M1 Macbook

  • +1

Anyone had a look at the new S2725DS? I'm tossing up between 1440p on 27'' or 4k on 27'' …

    https://www.dell.com/en-au/shop/dell-27-monitor-s2725ds/apd/…

    • +1

      I think 1440 on 27" is ideal.
      I think 4K on 32" is ideal.

      • -4

“Ideal” would be 5K on 27 inch and 6K on 32.

But 4K on both is pretty good.

        • +2

          That's downscaley mac nonsense territory.

  • What does upstream and downstream refer to? Is upstream where you connect a computer to it to supply the video? Then what does the power delivery do? Does it charge the laptop back?

    • +2

      Yep, that's correct

Upstream - video sent to monitor, power sent to laptop for charging. This is done over one cable, which is great for reducing cable clutter

Downstream - used for USB devices, such a keyboard, mouse, webcam etc. There's one port with device charging, which means that a device such as a phone can be charged via the monitor's power supply

  • I had this but 4k on 27" felt a little too much. upgraded to G3223Q which is 4k on 32" (also a great gaming monitor with 144hz refresh) and it's superb for productivity.

    • But if you need 2 for work, 2x32" can be too much for desk space.

    • +5

Just use DPI scaling. 4K is great.

      • sure. I was running this monitor at 150% in Windows. now G3223Q I run at 125% scaling. means I can comfortably fit more information. size matters (c)

        • +2

Agreed that size matters, I just didn't understand that 4k being "too much" for a screen when you can always scale up. fwiw I have a few of these screens and love them.

    • Happy to ready this cos I just bought the G3223Q - gotta put my RTX4080 super to work. Hopefully arrives next week. Going from 27" 1440p 60hz.

  • I've currently got a Dell UltraSharp U2721DE for my WFH setup. Could I add this S2722QC from this deal as a second monitor?

I'm a bit of a noob in this area so appreciate any advice.

    • +1

If your PC supports multiple monitor outputs, then you should be ok. What kind of PC do you use?

Since your current monitor has a 1440p resolution (2560 x 1440), I'd probably suggest saving some money and getting another 1440p monitor instead though

    • +3

Don't do it. Your first one is a QHD screen, but if you tried to drag windows across it will change resolution and be quite annoying as it doesn't match up. 27" QHD will be cheaper too.

      • Thanks guys
I'm just using a work-supplied Dell laptop which is connected via USB-C.
I only use it for my work which is primarily cloud-based services, very basic video editing, spreadsheets, docs, Teams meetings, Slack etc etc

No real need for it but just looking for the added convenience of a second monitor.
Appreciate the advice, I'll hold off on this one and keep an eye out for a deal on a 1440p monitor.

        Cheers guys!

      • You can set DPI for individual monitor on win 11 unless you are on CrapOS.

  • If you plug a phone into this with a USB-C able, will it just work?

    • +2

Only if the phone supports Display Port Alt Mode. A lot of Android phones do and iPads with USB-C
      https://www.uperfectmonitor.com/pages/list-of-smartphones-wi…

    • +1

It works for my Samsung S23U with the dex mode. it literally becomes a mobile PC.

    • Works on the iPhone 15 Pro. Even the USB-A port on the monitor connects to the phone.

    • I can't speak for this monitor, but I can plug my Galaxy into the thunderbolt dock at work and it gets Dex up, with full working keyboard and mouse!

iPhones seem to mirror their screens in that situation too.

S23 Ultra supports DisplayPort over USB-C, as does iPhone 15

If your phone is capable of USB-C video output, it should work!

    • Pixel won't do display out via USB-C

  • +1

Reading OzBargain on this monitor atm with MacBook Air. It's a great monitor and don't know if it's related to the MacBook or not but it can get really flickery at night under certain circumstances. I think it has something to do with night light and lots of greys on the screen at the same time. I've also had a couple instances of temporary image burn in in the two years I've had it. Not typical burn in but it would just capture whatever is on the screen at that moment and keep like a ghost image of it even across different input sources, but it eventually goes away

    Would buy again though

    • It's a great monitor and don't know if it's related to the MacBook or not but it can get really flickery at night under certain circumstances

It's a long-running incompatibility issue with certain ARM64 Macs and Dell monitors. It's been happening for years and nobody has found a permanent solution. It happened to me with my M1 MacBook Pro. I'm not sure if the latest M-series MacBooks still have this issue or not.

    • +2

Yep. I wrote this big piece on reddit about the flicker issue on M1 Mac. I wouldn't buy again personally: https://www.reddit.com/r/Dell/comments/u405lh/m1_mac_dell_mo…

      • Ha, thanks for that. I actually read through it about a month ago and that's how I found out there was a firmware update for the monitor that I couldn't install with just a Mac. Was a pain but I got a Windows machine hooked up and updated and haven't had the ghosting thing since, still a bit of flicker though

      • I'm guessing this is specific to the dell usb C monitors that run both power delivery and video over the single cable? - or has there been reports of others too?

      • +1

Didn't know of this issue with Macs. Is it a issue with all dell monitors? Like the Ultra sharp range affected as well?

I'm planning to use a Intel or M series MacBook hooked up to a external monitor.

Can't afford to shell out $2500 for apple branded studio display.

Was looking at the S series dell monitor. Fits my budget well.

  • +1

Tempting. Have one already, highly rate it for work.

Only downside is it doesn't officially support Mac, and on rare occasion has flickering issues.

    • Trouble is the ultrasharps Mac people love are double the price. Better colour calibration and a bigger dock, but still.

  • +6

Annual PSA - if you buy this and write it off for tax purposes it doesn't mean you're getting it for free

  • +6

have the S2721QS (without the hub) and highly recommend, picture quality is clear and crisp. I personally would not buy anything under 4k anymore after haveing 2x 4k 27" screens, compared to the HD screens at work.

    • I would not recommend anything under 5k after having iMac 27 for many years. ;-)

      • +1

        stop it :D

  • Currently got 1 1080p, 1 1440p. Tossing up should I try to get the 1440p or 4k?

    • I would suggest 4K for sure

      • you think so? Just thinking about the different resolution when moving across the screens.

  • Thanks . Bought 32inch 4K curved for $445

  • +1

Great monitor – I have one, except… it just died randomly the other day while I was using it. However, I got right onto Dell Support and they organised for one to be sent out the next day. So, it's hard to complain with that kind of service.

    • +1

What on earth are you on about? Even considering theres a full power supply in there? How does the thickness contribute to it being future 'e-waste' or not?

      • -5

I don't believe that this monitor ever requires the 155 watts it says it needs.
I believe they have taken a generic product/case/design, and they have re-used it expecting to eventually replace it with a slimmer Dell monitor, which they could be making and selling right now for the same price. But instead, they pump out these thick cheaper Dells, knowing business customers tend to just "go with them again".
Once all these over-bulked monitors meet some proper competition, every business is going to want to get rid of these to not seem like dinosaurs..
It's such a huge difference to what is coming.
At least these are VESA mountable, but good considerable design without wastage is important for keeping things out of e-waste.

        • +1

Still utter nonsense. Businesses don't replace equipment just because 'the new model is out' they replace them over a depreciation cycle or as they break. No one is going to think that customers are going to think less of them because they don't have the slimmest Dell monitors, they care if these do the job, which they do.
No one gives half a shit about who has the latest 'Dell' monitors, what a ridiculous premise!

        • +2

155 watts max. Using the USB C to power another device.

          27 watts in regular use.

    • +2

      Depth: 5.54 cm
Which includes powersupply, speakers and ports.
And that's the thickest part of it, the bulge at the back. Has nothing to do with e-waste imo.

But you could be a pro at this so please share.

    • +2

ON the contrary, I'd be worried if it was too thin - only home grade (read cheap) monitors are made paper thin.

  • +1

Customary reminder for those considering these for a desktop, it doesn't have a DP port and you'll need a USB-C t DP cable

    • 2 x HDMI, What desktop do not have HDMI output these days.

      • +1

        G-Sync compatible only over DP/USB-C

        • +1

This monitor can only do 60hz. Its not a Gaming monitor.

          • +2

@OzHan: It has a decent gamut and for people who don't play need high FPS and play occasionally, the GSync compatibility works well.

It's not a deal breaker by any stretch, but a DP-USB-C cable will be required if using it that way.

  • Good value, didnt have to buy a dock. Some docks alone where $200-300.
Enough USB A ports for various peripherals and charges laptop.
    Perfect for my use case.

  • Tax time deal would need a code to bring it under $300.

    • whats with tax time and under $300?

  • I have this and use it with my M1 MacBook Air and it’s awesome. You can keep your laptop charged and run dual monitors with one cable and the backlight is even and colour is accurate enough for what I do.

    • +1

@bunnybash, do you mean a laptop screen and a monitor? or a laptop with 2 monitors?

      • ahh yeah, good catch, yeah, one laptop screen and one monitor… for those who don't know… Apple gimped the M1 to only run one external monitor for some reason.

        • It's a limitation of the chip - M1 DisplayCoprocessor only has bandwidth for one raw video signal - and the beefier Macbooks (Ultra, Max) can do it but have… Much larger chips.

The M1 in the Air/non-pro macbook pro is basically the mobile phone chip, hence why it can't dump out more bandwidth.

  • I bought one a couple of weeks ago for $400. :-(

      • +1

Just wanted to let you know that I got a refund of the difference between what I paid and the current price so, again, thanks!

  • +2

One of the real benefits from this monitor (have bought a few for work) and others with Docks and PD, is that the docks actually work with the monitor.
I have every major brand dock fail on me - sick of them. Will only get monitors with inbuilt docks in future.
And one if these with a laptop at the side for a 2nd monitor is a good flexible office setup

    • But… what if the dock inside this one fails?

  • nice! just what the taxman ordered!

  • Booted mine up yesterday and it had a vertical line on the the screen. Pretty devo.

Replacement should arrive tomorrow apparently. But still annoying.

Other than that it works perfectly for my use case. PIP at this price point is particularly 🔥
