Best GPU $300- $500

My son is building his first PC for his birthday in a month, using parts he has bought/scavenged himself.

I am buying the graphics card as his present. He has asked for a 6600, 6600XT or 1080TI. I'm not really up with the latest in graphics cards, are they reasonable choices in the $300-$500 range? The cheaper it is, perhaps I can add something else in to the present.

He will be using it for games - RDR2, EA FC, Rainbow 6, Fortnite etc

Thanks!

6600 or 6600 xt whichever is cheaper.

1080ti is quite old now, you couldn't find one new.

  • We got two of these, one for me and one for Jr, no problems works great and comes with 12 months warranty.

  • What's the screen resolution?

All cards above will disappoint him, even at 1440p :/

My pick, within budget, would be the 6700XT: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005005521142689.html

Kids are surprisingly tolerant of low graphics settings and frame rates.

RTX 4060 seems to be a bit better value than the 6600xt at the moment. If your budget can stretch though you could get 7700xt for $629.

This, the 4060 is worth going for with frame generation, it should stretch the life of it a fair bit compared to a 6600xt. It's not perfect tech but it will get him years of great gaming at 1080p and even a bit of 4K gaming now.

  • Second hand 6800 or 6800xt have a look on ebay.

  • Since he has scavenged the other parts as well, why not check on FB marketplace / Gumtree for used GPU?

    Cheap: 6600 for about $200
Moderate: 3060 Ti for about $350

Ask for original receipt and box as well.

  • Others have given enough advice but what I'd say is: don't go cheaper / save money to "add something else" to the pressie. You want maximum oomph out of the GPU so whatever you're planning to spend on it, use the entire amount as best you can - either get a better performing second hand one or find the best deal you can on a new GPU at your max budget.

Personally, I'd go with a RTX4060 new (get the cheapest one you can find - brands don't matter, should be $400-$450), I also think that would make for a super exciting gift as it's the 4000 series which is the latest in nvidia's lineup, it has frame gen and all the latest bells and whistles (software-wise). And it's brand new in box. Would be 1000x more exciting than a 1080ti which is a very old card.

I forgot to come back to this, but thanks for all the advice! I am leaning towards an RTX 4060.
