Highly recommend this HRM. Had an issue where it stopped syncing after battery replacement. A few e-mails back and forth with support and they sent me out a new one.

Worth noting, these straps sometimes fail due to water ingress if you don't replace the battery perfectly. That means getting the seal in exactly the right spot, using waterproof grease to improve the seal, correctly torquing the tiny little screws…

Not to say you messed up, it is difficult to get right, and very common that these straps will work perfectly for 1x battery, then fail immediately after the change.

The fix for this is in the newer model that isn't available in Australia - we no longer allow devices with coin-cells and tool-less access to the battery so we're stuck with the old version.

      • Yep.

Completely agree with everything you've said. I think it's important to note, that in my situation, Garmin support asked me a few questions, then express shipped me a new device.

        • I've gone through three of these, and they've all failed after changing the battery. Fortunately, I've been just inside the one year warranty time period, and both Pushys and Garmin have been quick to respond and replace.

It's weird though - I had one of the old blue versions, and it was a champ for three years and three batteries.

  • Price matched by Amazon AU

    • Appearing as $129.00 on Amazon for me, $125.99 on Pushy's.

  • How much more accurate is this compared to the watch? Epix 2

    • Tree fiddy times more accurate.

Optical HR works really well for some and terrible for others.
However even if it works great for you there is still a bit of a lag in HR changes. It tends to balance out overall though.
The Chest strap provides more data as well if you are a data nerd.

The new garmin watch hr is pretty accurate these days but compared to the strap the hr is slightly delayed and less accurate. Not sure if it has changed but older watches need the strap for finding lactate threshold which is technically still an estimate. The only other thing I can think of is if you don't want to wear your watch but there's a bunch of cheaper hrm straps for that purpose.

      • I wanted to do the lactate threshold test last week (also have an Epix2), and the strap is still required for this.

        • oh good to know. i just got a cheapie of aliexpress. works perfectly fine for my amateur needs anyway.

I have the same watch, and I watched a bunch of videos about this exact question.

The impression that I got in general is that for steady paces they are really close, but for short sprints or hills, there might be a bigger gap, probably due to the delay that others mentioned, as well as watch not being tight enough on the wrist for some people.

In the end, I decided I'm not at a level where a couple of beats, or a few seconds of delay, will matter much over the length of a session or week.

It's like having a cheap scale at home. It's not 100% precise, but will show you the general trend :)

    • I wouldn't bother with the strap unless you need it for other reasons. The strap should do better running dynamics than the watch alone, if you also cycle with a cycling computer then the strap is arguably less intrusive than a bulky watch, and the strap can do stuff like watchless HRM recording which is cool… But if you don't need any of that, I'd not bother.

Should be able to do a 5% price beat at 99 bikes.

    https://www.99bikes.com.au/computer-part-garmin-hrm-pro

    • 99 bikes don't price beat garmin

      • Oh. I didn’t know that. Thanks.

The specific reason/s that this price beat violates our terms & conditions is below:
        All Garmin products.
Unfortunately we do not offer our price beat guarantee on Garmin products.

Not worth the money. No matter what you do or how carefully you are there's no chance of getting them to seal after the first battery change. Brand new out of the box you will see the red seal pinched by the battery cover. Support is good they have replaced it in the past. Garmin should stop making excuses about the Pro Plus not being in AU because of the screwless battery compartment after all Apple can see air tags with a screwless battery compartment.

I replaced my HRM battery a few months ago and it hasn't failed me yet. Sure I'd like to have the screwless version but this is still an excellent product.

Changed the battery in mine twice now and no issues. Although I was aware of the waterproof issue when changing batteries so have been extra careful.
Good point re AirTags. I wonder how Apple are getting away with that?

  • I wanted an accompanying device to the Venu 3 that was able to measure/record height for activities such as a stair stepper. After having a chat to the Garmin rep. he recommended the I bought the Pro Plus.

Well, knowing the issues with the Pro, I did buy it the Pro Plus from overseas as recommended by the rep. Disappointingly, it didn't perform the function I was told it would.

After getting in contact with Garmin later, I was that the rep. said nothing about the Pro or Pro Plus performing that function and they closed the case for a return or refund. I don't have any use for this $240 device and currently its sitting in a box.

I'm not sure what the lesson is here other than in future situations to inform a rep. that I'm recording the phone call for quality and assurance purposes, which I'm not willing to do.

I love their products but feel absolutely screwed by Garmin here. The Garmin products I have now feel dirty.

I've been using a cheap coospo hrm (and other sensors) for years with no drama.

    • Thanks for the tip. Went onto aliexpress and ordered one for $26. Seems to get good reviews, however begrudgingly.

Former Garmin HRM owner here. Had to replace due to mysterious dying of device, likely water ingress after battery change.

  • Doesn't seem worth it after watching dc rainmaker's comparison videos

only 4 in stock - but can be had for $105.40 for The Odd Spoke eBay

  • Can I use this whilst my watch sits in my bag?

I ask as for boxing sessions, it's very hard to wear the watch and then the gloves over.

    • yes, you can pair external HRM's with a watch
