The deal for the speakers with the stand is cheaper than just the speakers.
Good deal imo, these sound great.

Are these the same speakers as those sold by Mwave in 2023 at $299?
No.
Not disputing the deal, but highly suggest listening to these against other bookshelves before dropping $600. They have a particularly warm sound that won't impress everyone and you're definitely paying a bit for the brand/marketing.
(I've had AE P4s for years and like them just fine for the record)
There are many alternative brand of bookshelves speakers that people might consider… more value for the budget
Unfortunately Audioengine is marked up at a premium towards regular consumers because of their marketing.
I personally think they're not too bad and a lot simpler to setup than regular speakers, but in the spirit of Ozb I'll throw some recommendations.
Some popular considerations at +-200 of this price point would be
JBL LSR306
Wharfedale Diamond 12.1 (Passive)
ELAC Debut 2.0 B6.2 (Passive)
Jamo 803 (Passive)
I highly recommend setting personal trackers on speakers sold through Amazon as there can often be.. absurd deals thanks to Amazon warehousing services
This isn't a field most Ozb would monitor as speakers are typically a one and done type of purchase
I don't know why you're recommending those latter three as alternatives. Those are passive speakers that are not optimized for near-field listening.
As for the JBL LSR, they are good, but they are monitors with a flat signature and require a bit of EQ to get the best out of them. No bluetooth, and you also need to buy cables separately to connect to your DAC(or interface). They also don't have dedicated stands that tilt them backwards, which is pretty important for near-field listening to minimize reflection from the surface of the desk.
A5+ is a more well-rounded out of the box solution, optimized for both near-field and small rooms. Can use them with a PC, a small home theatre setup or even an isolated room for music via bluetooth
The statement that passive speakers are not optimized for near-field listening is kind of disingenuous. It builds on the idea that there's some mysterious forces at play that we cannot control which speaker manufacturers are solely aware of and use to segment their products. The function of bookshelf speakers are in the name, they're meant to rest on a surface such as a table or bookshelf and are optimized to do so. Typically for near-field listening
If referring to Near-field, we'd consider near-field distortions at varying loudness and frequencies (Measured in dB and hertz) and we use Klippel's measurements at a set distance of 1m to test it. A good video introducing this concept is as follows https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-s-R1HCYUYs
In terms of priorities, good directivity, frequency response measured at 1m, low resonances measured at 1m and low distortion would be key.

If referring to far-field, far-field measurements is a function of room size and even more disingenuous to measure a speaker's performance by
I like my A5s that I have had for nigh on 10 years now but the edifier 2750DB i got to replace them as my main speakers are equally impressive and half the price, with more inputs and BT built in.
only reason I even bought the 2750s was because the left channel on the A5s went quiet and I haven't really bothered to have them repaired, so its not like I was hunting for something to sound better, just wanted something that was the right price and Id heard some 1200 series edifiers and was impressed.
Are these the same speakers as those sold by Mwave in 2023 at $299? Is a 100% price increase in 14 months reasonable?
