Prices Went up for a Sale?

Was wanting to buy some tools from tool kit depot, heard a sale was coming up as I called them up to ask for some advice on a product.
Figured I'd wait another two days for it to start…Ends up the prices on pretty much everything actually went up.

How annoying!

Just having a sook, but seriously what stupid business practice.

Contacted Management and they sorted it out for me.

Thanks for reading my useless vent post.

If you have proof, take it to the ACCC

    • Ive got a screenshot of my cart and their previous prices still come up on google… What will the ACCC do though?

Ping the business for deceptive advertising. It still won't mean you get a cheaper price though.

What will the ACCC do though?

Intercourse all.. no more weak as urine department in the country

        • What do you mean?

@m0tyrider: People who say "report to the ACCC" forget that the ACCC do not investigate individual complaints. Report to Fair Trading instead.

Reminds me of a HP laptop price error deal years ago. HP didn't honour the sale (no legal obligation), everyone said they're going to report it, I pointed out the above, got negged to shit and weeks later….. ACCC replied saying what I said. Ouch.

@Clear: I never really understood this policy though. How will the ACCC know about issues unless alerted to them? I mean they do go after companies that break the rules and so how did they hear about the issue in the first place. Unless they hear that ebay does this or jb hifi doesn't honour that how would they know? After all breaking the Australian consumer rules only affects a bunch of "individuals" so at what point does a number of individual complaints reach a critical mass to investigate?

              • @Drj55: Fair Reading can report it. Only an ACCC employee would know how many are needed.

Proof of what? They are allowed to raise prices.

OP posted the cart screen shot, they are looking at this product that was $569.05.

Its not on sale at all, just had a price increase. Nothing illegal here…. Move on.

If they increased their price to negate a "Storewide sale", then that is deceptive advertising.

        Reference here. https://www.accc.gov.au/media-release/kogan-to-pay-350000-fo…

        • If they increased their price to negate a "Storewide sale",

Where in the sale does it say price have been reduced ?

If they increased their price to negate a "Storewide sale", then that is deceptive advertising.

See my post above, the link says zip about a sale. They have a double member discount promo on.

So the question will be, do the prices drop tomorrow, if so, then 100% deceptive advertising and should be reported.

This happens all the time though, sadly… or at least used to.

Like OP, I visited Kathmandu the day before their 2 for 1 sale started, but decided to wait.

Once the sale started, all but one of the tags for the item I was looking at basically went up by double. The staff were confused for a few moments at the difference between tag and scanned prices, and they admitted they forgot to change the tag for that item which they ended up selling at the cheaper price.

    • Least they sold it to you at the cheaper price.

  • Are you sure the sale didn't start the day after their usually scheduled special pricing period?

    • Called them up this morning, sale is on.

      • But does tool kit depot usually put items on and off sale at the start of the week or whatever. Maybe the old mini weekly sale ended, and then they rolled out all new prices for the big sale. And for this particular item it worked out the old weekly sale price or whatever was cheaper.

        • Who knows, Ive never shopped their before and less inclined too now.

Called them up this morning, sale is on.

        So what is the 'sale'?

That product page link has nothing about a sale on it. Just member prices.

        • "Double Discount Price" Is the Tradie Night price.

          • @m0tyrider: Then wait till tomorrow and see, as that double discount is one day only.

if it really matters, maybe try asking to speak to a manager who would hopefully be able to clarify issue (or at least smooth it over for you?)

    • Ill give it a crack.

      • I see you said management sorted it out for you, be good to know the result. Did they offer previous sale price plus double discount?

        • +1

Guess they must have signed a non disclosure agreement to get the discount.

Be mindful that Google Shopping ads often only update every 24 hours and are specific to Post Code 2000, so it can show an interstate price.

They have learned this from Telstra:
    Good news from Telstra

From next month there is going to be a substantial price reduction
Your monthly plan is being reduced down from 119.00 per month down to 139.00 per month!!

  • Two almost identical - models except one has more battery power 5 amp vs 4amp

    There's the price difference.

Could this be the case - We cant tell from the screen grab of a few days ago because model code isnt shown

  • Wow that's crook. It's meant to be a double discount day and h
The price "on sale" is $150 more. Dodgy.

  • Putting a price up to then mark it down in a sale has been going on for a very long time. We were in retail jewellery in New Zealand and lived in a town where Michael Hill bought his second store. His whole model was based on making people think they were getting a bargain when in fact the "sale price" was the normal retail price. We all thought it was scandalous, but in reality it had been happening for a long time but not on such a large scale. I cannot say if this is still the company practice as Michael Hill himself is retired and it's a arhe scale.operarion these days. However this experience did teach me to be wary of sales. I check things out before being sucked in by a sale since that time. The internet has helped make that easier. Have you noticed though how in some stores your internet just does not work if you do a search for an item to check price?

  • always do, at least 4-6 weeks prior to sales. Then come sale time you pay same as you would have or 5% less.
