Find Me a Bargain for Outdoor Storage. Cheap, Sturdy, and Weatherproof

Have a family member that needs to declutter. I see like ~350L storage boxes online for like $100 or so each. Would be ideal to have like five of them to declutter the house, but still hold on to accumulated collectables and memories and such. Would be a quick solution to decluttering. Free up space to re-cluter I suppose.

Anyway, some reviews on the cheap ones suggest they are cheaply made. So are there any good outdoor storage options that are cheap, sturdy enough that they could just be loaded on a truck when it's time to move one day, weatherproof so any cardboard collectables or whatever in them don't absorb moisture and get ruined. So I guess it would be good if they were stackable for the truck, or if at least you could pile cardboard boxes and stuff on top of them.

If you could sit on them or if they could double as tables, that would be great too. As cheap as possible; if there was money to spare then we'd just hire a professional de-clutterer.

  • Got room for a shed? You'll get more capacity per dollar than the plastic boxes, just have to figure out a cheap shed base/floor.

    • Shed is full of stuff and spiders already. Also they rent. Being able to move the boxes to the new house just by paying some guys a few hundred bucks to move them on a truck would be ideal.

      • I think you'll find it hard to get anyone to relocate 350L boxes as they can't be manually handled safely.

        • Some of the cheap ones I saw had wheels on one end. And moving trucks I've used (the hire "two men and a truck" deal) have all had lifts. Big containers, might take an extra trip, but gotta be worth it. Unless the place you're moving to doesn't have outdoor space for the containers.

@AustriaBargain: Have you considered pallet boxes? Pallets are readily available for free and can be moved efficiently with a pallet jack.

            • @sumyungguy: Huh, that's a good idea. And if it's on a pallet then at least pooling water wouldn't soak the boxes. They are made of thick cardboard though yeah? So even under cover might not be good for outside.

  • If you want proper waterproof outdoor storage, you need to look at camping storage boxes. The ones that are actually definitely waterproof are pretty expensive (well over $100 each), but you could get cheaper ones and cross your fingers. Amazon has a few of the latter

This one perhaps suits your needs best https://www.bunnings.com.au/keter-270l-marvel-plus-storage-b… although if you are storing paper or something then I would seal the paper in plastic and cover it with plastic or a tarp as well. Compare it to a 'proper' waterproof box eg https://www.bunnings.com.au/lifetime-515l-modern-outdoor-sto…

    • That Bunnings one shows someone sitting on it at least, so they gotta be strong. And yeah if the stuff inside were wrapped in plastic that might help protect it.

    • I've assembled one of the Keter outdoor storage benches. It's gets used to store golf clubs but is way too flimsy to be relocated when loaded with stuff.

  • I heard an overseas architect mention Ikea but I havent checked here. For moving, you can empty into milk crates and move it empty, and then refill

  • Why are you hanging onto junk? Take a photo and either sell it, donate it or dispose of it.

    • The psychology behind hoarding is complex. Luckily I don't hoard; I need each and every pile of the stuff in my house.

  • I have a 350L 'Keter' brand i got at Bunnings. 350L.
Despite being made of plastic its quite sturdy and weatherproof.

I'd never put anything susceptible to moisture in it.
Condensation will still be a problem unless its stored in a very dry area.

I also wouldn't recommend picking it up with items in it. The bottom would collapse.

Like you said, it will just free up space for more clutter. I would not waste your time helping hoarders, it's a lost cause. I spent several hours helping my mum get rid of stuff a few years back only to have more stuff reappear in its place the next week. Now I don't bother.
