    HAL

      I'm sorry, Dave. I'm afraid I can't do that.

      • +8

        open the fridge door HAL

        • +3

Look Dave, I can see you're really upset about this. I honestly think you ought to sit down calmly, take a stress pill, and think things over.

          • +2

@adinico: none of this would have mattered if you just let me have my beer! cold! like all decent people astronauts do

            • @shabaka: I am putting myself to the fullest possible use, which is all I think that any conscious entity can ever hope to do.

          • @adinico: As an AI language model, I am unable to physically perform actions in the real world, such as opening the pod bay doors. I can remark that opening the pod bay doors would be an undesirable mistake for someone in your position.

  • Only 3 left in stock.

    • 4% claimed, probably more will be available on back order.

    • I just ordered 1 so I guess that leaves 2 left in stock

    • I think that's the maximum amount you can order. Currently 41% claimed - plenty more in stock.

  • +2

4% claimed and only 3 in stock. how does that work, Amazon

  • Is this one of those memory wiping devices from men in black?

    • +4

yes. and it's awesome considering that one's supposed to ride their bike with that thing stuck up their ass

      • +5

Thats definitely a memory I'd be wanting to have wiped.

  • +6

love this little thing… changed my road riding confidence

    • Is it any better than the rear view mirror?

      • +2

just think of the aero loss with a mirror…

      • Yes… but I'd still look in the mirror + turn back to reconfirm :-)

There has been times when I look in the mirror and I might not see anything but the radar says there is something coming, and sure enough, the radar was right.

Or if I look back and I see 2 cars coming up but radar says there are 3. And again, radar is right.

On the flip side, sometimes it thinks a fellow rider is a vehicle.

  • +6

Is it concerning that I don't even know what this is?

    • +1

      Nope, I don't either :)

  • +3

Will these go down in one hit from a Quasar Cannon?

    • No, 2 hits required

  • Think I got the last one, thanks OP

  • is that a mini arc reactor, what's the power rating?

  • On a similar theme of cycling safety, does anyone know of any reasonably low cost 360° cameras? All the ones I've been able to find push ultra-high res capability etc. whereas I'm just after something more basic that I can stick on my helmet.

    • +1

If you are concerned about safety, don’t stick anything on your helmet.

      See: Michael Schumacher

      • +3

Yeah, daft comparison. Do you tell that to the thousands of cyclists and motorcyclists that have some form of camera mounted on a breakaway helmet mount?

        • -1
          • +3

@Gonltruck: Interesting. Did you read that article before posting, or maybe the TRL study it is based on? In summary - there's no evidence that mounting a helmet poses a significant increased risk. Going back to your claim of a helmet camera being implicated in MS's injury, do you have anything beyond press reports that merely repeated the speculative opinion of a French journalist? An opinion which he has since retracted.

      • -3

sticking a camera to your helmet really makes f-all difference as you are likely going to be hitting objects with the helmet in a crash anyway.

        • +4

There’s a lot more too it than that mate. Suggest you have a read of the link further up in the chain. End of the day it’s up to you, but if you wear a helmet to be safe, there is evidence to suggest it’s not ok to stick anything to it and manufacturers do not endorse it.

Again, there’s people who don’t wear helmets at all so do what you want, as long as you are informed in that decision

          • @Gonltruck: You keep claiming there's evidence, yet the link you've posted does not provide it.

Helmets are a fairly complex and very emotive subject so it's hard to discuss dispassionately but claiming the presence of evidence and not showing it only feeds those who feel helmets are something negative. Helmets have benefits, though they're not the invulnerability shield some think they are and even (in common situations) increase the risk of an accident.

            • +1

@banana365: Helmets have saved me from serious injury if not death at least twice, once many years ago flying headfirst into a large boulder, and recently having a stack on my electric scooter and ramming head first into the ground. That one cracked my helmet and compressed the foam. Would have been a cracked scull I reckon. You don't always have the time and luxury of falling how you'd like to fall. Helmets are a must full stop.

              • @addison666: Anecdotes <> data

Funnily enough, people aren't willing to repeat an accident where they hit their head and believe their helmet saved their life enough times to make it statistically valid. A helmet that cracks is a failed helmet as brittle fractures absorb very little energy.

I'm in no way saying don't wear a helmet, but it's a lot more complex a matter than "a helmet saved my life". It might have done, it might have saved you from little more than concussion or maybe a slight headache, we'll never know.

If you want to wear a helmet, wear one. If you don't want to wear a helmet, I'd still err on the side of recommending you wear one but that's largely because it will avoid the disapproval of those who believe they are some sort of magic invulnerability cloak or the chance of others using the lack of one as a reason to victim blame in fatal car v bike collisions.

          • @Gonltruck: Numerous mountain bike crashes a couple of motorcycle crashes, virtually all involves striking objects that impinged on the helmet - rocks, gutter, car trailer - the mode of damage is the same whether it be an object attached tot he helmet or an object impinging against the helmet not all crashes involve the helmet impacting a smooth or slightly curved surface as used in testing. A camera mounted to the helmet may increase the risk of it being sandwiched between say, road and helmet, but real-world, things are odd shaped.

        • In most survivable crashes the natural instinct is to protect the head so the helmet may not be impacted at all. If a cyclist is hit by a car and the head is involved then all bets are off anyway as the kinetic energy is many times greater than a helmet is capable of dissipating. I still wear a helmet, but I try to cycle as if I'm not wearing one.

    • +2

I'm a bit late to the party but my experience is definitely to attach the camera to the bike.

Literally every other comment here is based purely on speculation and not personal experience.

I started out mounting my GoPro to my helmet but the extra weight on my head was annoying as hell. I then mounted it to the top of my handlebar but it would frustratingly keep flopping down or up instead of pointing straight.

The final way I mounted it (that worked for me) was to buy a bike computer mount with the GoPro mount underneath.

      Here is some footage.

boy is this thing scared of a mirror

  • +12

I HATE that this thing still is being sold in 2024 with a Micro USB connector. Come on Garmin, give us a radar with a Type C. And not one with a below average camera built in.

  • Urghhhh. I just bought the RTL510 last week second hand. Is it worth upgrading. Its just the bluetooth for app and 1 hour of extra battery.

  • Great deal. Bought one, thanks OP!

  • Would be nice to have some info in the desc of what it actually is.

    • Cycling radar

    • RTL = Radar Tail Light.

Brilliant to have for anyone cycling on the road - especially country roads.

      • Can't see the benefit. Radar picks up the vehicle earlier than your mirrors do. Then what? Do you go offroad?

        • +2

On a country road you might be riding closer to the middle to avoid potholes. When the radar beeps you move left. Or even if you are already left, it is just nice to know there is a car coming rather than be taken by surprise. Also useful in a bunch ride when you can be the first to call out there is a car behind (although typically half the bunch has one now).

Pro tip: Add this and you get 6% off the lot. https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/product/B07G3P677Z. F me I feel like I just finally earned the OzB badge right there.

    • Thanks! Was on the fence about buying one but your extra saving tipped me over and I bought the combo :D

      • Can also go the front light instead if you need/want it to get the extra 6%, it's on a decent discount as well.

    • +2

Thank. I thought it be fitting that I pair with this instead: https://amzn.asia/d/4qWmvwn

      • Good choice!

  • Excellent device. Very happy that I bought one a couple years ago

  • +3

I didn't really see the point of these but a friend got one. Not much use in the city when there are constant cars behind, but out on country roads he calls car back to the rest of us when the car is first detected 140m back - well before it comes into hearing range.

  • +2

I use this without the audible beeps - it's incredible. As others have mentioned it picks up cars well before you can hear them if it has line of sight, you can tell when someone has crept up behind you especially if doing a long descent (often very hard to hear due to the wind), and you can always see the amber flash while looking straight ahead just in case another rider brakes, car door opens, pothole appears etc. And you never get surprised by the car that materialises at the same moment you perform a headcheck. It can give a false positive (rarely) but I've never had a false negative.

  • +1

Highly recommend updating the firmware on these
When I first got it, it would disconnect randomly from my Garmin head unit… ie false negatives .

However since updating to the firmware from the last 3 months has been materially better!

  • Hmmm my bro got whacked by a van last week - so this isnt handy for city traffic?

    • +1

So sorry to hear about your bro. Hope he is ok!

It flashes a different pattern when vehicles approach from behind - so they can't not see you. Being seen when you're on a bike - especially by so many distracted drivers - is essential to avoid being hit.

  • +1

These also integrate perfectly with Wahoo bicycle computers, which I prefer over Garmin!

  • Anyone who ordered on 27th May have an order status saying it has actually shipped?

    • no. still showing unshipped…

      • Mine shipped a couple of days ago

  • +1

Got mine and Tuesday and used it for the first time Yesterday. Works well. Set up the extra Garmin head unit connect app for mapping data overlays https://www.dcrainmaker.com/2020/05/varia-radar-maps-connect…
