I think the 500ml cans are also made in Australia. Previously the 500ml cans were imported from Japan.

Definitely a difference in taste. Love the ones that were made in Japan, the aussie ones are rubbish.

    • What's the trick to get the imported ones, must be around still. All tastes a bit hard out of the can this stuff but alright sometimes.

      • Local independent bottle shops might still have them but the major names seemed to have switched to this stuff

        • +3

Oh right, yeah not going on a goose chase but sounds like a shame. Bit over beers anyway these days, those Kirin and 196 cans go alright

          • @G-rig: Take a look in Japanese/Korean supermarkets - they'll sometimes have imported beers like this, quite affordable too.

            • @pennypincher98: No doubt.. not paying heaps for it though, and all the empty calories haha).

      • Trick to getting imported ones = Buy from QLD? The 500ml cans I see/buy are generally imported (I have them in my fridge and literally just checked), so I wonder if the other states are getting the locally brewed/rebranded local beer.
I do see locally brewed stuff, but its generally the bottles, though some shops have the import Asahi bottles as well.

I ordered a case off Kogan and it was sold by CUB. If just delivered and it says made in Japan. It wasn't as cheap as this deal but I bought it with Kogan points earned from their credit card.

    • +1

I noticed the last 6 pack I got from BWS was made in Japan.

      • +1

Was there a best before date on them?
Surely the remaining imports are getting close.

        • +1

I just bought a Japan made 6 pack today from bws and they expire in November this year. I'd say it's getting real close

    • +1

I still havent seen Australian cans, all Japanese when i buy them.

    • +2

I was of the same opinion as you, But i went to a Dan Murphies on the weekend and the 500ml cans were imported from Japan, bought a case just in case

    • Bought cases of 24 x 500ml Japan brewed @$70ea delivered
Bought more at same price with new account using code WELCOME10 a few weeks ago.
      Expiry Nov24

      Wouldn't buy local brewed😜

  • +3

Definitely not the Japanese ones anymore.

  • +1

Damn (in QLD). Maybe flag, same as coupon, not in QLD, TAS, NT

  • +3

The cans with braille on top I believe are still Japanese, without are Australian.

  • +4

    I want the Japanese ones.

    • +7

Nope but they sure do taste better

    • +11

No, people have different tastes and preferences.

If your preferred beer was suddenly being made in india with no change in packaging and a noticeably different flavour i dare say you might not be all that happy about it.

    • +4

its like the difference between good ole Fosters and export Fosters, original always tastes better

    • +4

Go to Japan and try their beers and compare it to our beers here. Quality stuff over there, not saying everything is trash in Australia but when CUA starts making imported beers over here they tend to screw up the taste.

      • +1

        CUB is owned by Asahi!

      • Guess CUA would screw it up being a bank

        • sorry typo

          • @mastermik3y: Ah.
Anyway seems like in Qld it's mostly imported stock still from what I've noticed.

            • @G-rig: So lucky, wished I lived in QLD!

              • @mastermik3y: Guess, not that this deal would have helped but may keep an eye out for specials.

    • oh you should see the way I drive my 2004 hi-lux!

Firstly, thank you OP because this is a nice deal ,but eff you OP because I'm trying to get abs.

    • +7

Why would beer stop you from getting anti-lock braking?

      • +1

I think what Dr Prepper is saying is that if they keep spending money on beer, they won't be saving enough money to upgrade their car to one with ABS.

Jesus even these are now no longer the Japanese ones? What is even the point? If it's not the actual beer then why bother even selling it under that name? Just call it something else and be up front about what it is and where it's from.

A while back I saw some talk in the news about the government stepping in to prevent beers misrepresenting themselves as to what they are ie locally made masquerading as imported, or otherwise imported from somewhere other than their original location (eg the Asahi Super Dry bottles used to come from Thailand and then China). I haven't heard anything since so maybe they were just saying it to win some votes without planning to ever do anything about it. Can't find the link now, maybe I just imagined it, wishful thinking,e tc.

It does seem like it's not in keeping with the spirit, if not the letter, of the law. When you're presenting your beer as being Japanese or German or whatever, but then the fine print on the bottle says it's brewed in Australia, surely that's getting pretty close to the line in terms of country of origin labelling and/or misrepresenting what the product actually is?

Does anybody know of places that do sell the genuine imported stuff rather than the locally made ones? I know in the past I've ordered some Japanese beer (Echigo Koshihikari, Suntory Premium Malts and Hitachino Nest) from Old Richmond Cellars in Melbourne, although the shipping cost is prohibitive. I've been able to get the Koshihikari from Vintage Cellars and they've occasionally had some Hitachino Nest (not the red rice ale, unfortunately, since that's my preferred one). But other than that, even a lot of their Japanese beers are just the locally made ones, or imported from Vietnam etc.

    • +1

Plenty of other local and hipster beers and better Japanese ones around anyway.

Just get some Suntory premium malts, yebisu gold etc.. in fact, just go for a holiday and enjoy it all over there for reasonable prices.

I understand the frustration but they were never the best anyway, just give them a miss in that case if they are more than 5-10% different in taste.

  • a carton use to be reasonably priced, not anymore.

    • +3

I just had a look - the deals 7 years ago were $60 for a carton of the cans.
So this is definitely a deal

      • +3

Only difference is that 7 years ago it was definitely made in Japan but now its brewed in Australia so $60 now would probably be normal price considering it tastes nothing like Asahi that was made in Japan. In my eyes it's not a deal.

      • I found some $55 deals. Fair this isn't too bad but it's also not guaranteed to be Japanese made, as that's what I believe is the recent update on this beer is

  • OOS, cannot pick up, cannot be delivered.

  • +1

just ordered 2 in victoria and went through

  • what happens with these deals if one of the items isn't in stock when they go to pack it? I have a pick up slot of 6-8pm, but unsure if they will fulfill the whole order (3 x Mr Fitch cider) plus 2 in a previous order….and it seems might only be 5 in stock (well that is all I can add to the second order anyway to see max) Do you lose that $45 off that you got for the order?

    • OOS items get taken off the order total at full price. Discounts remain

      • I hope so. My second order was cancelled as apparently the bank didn't allow the payment (prob thought it was for possible fraud protection? IDK) except you don't know until they go to pick it and it gets cancelled. I have redone the order with a different credit card to be sure….hopefully??, but hoping they still have all stock by the time they do it tomorrow afternoon. This system is very flawed, which is why I rarely do online orders with Coles or Woolies…..too much hassle. I got them to hold the first order and I will pick up both tomorrow.

        • Sleepless night
          .

  • I just got my delivery and it's made in Australia, daymn what a bloody shame!!!! We want the real thing!!!!
