Tablet with SD Card

Hey gang, just wondering if someone can suggest a tablet for my special needs brother. He likes to watch movies, and I'd like to set up a tablet for him with an SD card slot so I can download them and hot swap the card in and out over time.
He wont really be able to use it himself, but his carers should be able to help him out with navigating and scrolling.

He has poor eyesight, so a good sized screen, and a good battery would also be ideal.

Probably not wanting to spend more than $750 if I can avoid it (not the worst if I can't).

Low end tablet from Lenovo at $199. Just note that the processor (Mediatek Helio G88) is very low end and isn't capable of doing much apart from browsing, reading ebooks and playing back videos.

If you do want a premium tablet (i.e. high end Snapdragon CPU, lots of RAM, colour accurate display and better speakers) then perhaps the Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 or S9 FE PLUS.

Any bigger and it may be more cost-effective to get a Multimedia player connected to a TV.

  • I got a Samsung A8 Tab for my wife and then one for me, they seem to go on special to a ballpark of $300 every now and then. The current model is the A9 tab. My old tablet got to the point where it was struggling at most 720 resolution videos, the A8 has handled everything I've thrown at it, I barley play games on mobile devices but my nephew's were playing Minecraft on it and it seemed to run well. I've been impressed with battery life, I have been on a few long flights this year and never got out the portable battery for it.

There are some things that seem software locked to the S series, the main thing I've noticed is Bluetooth 5 means you can connect to two devices at once but the A series can only output to one at a time unlike the S series.

That Lenovo one linked is an impressive price, I've not used one and can't comment on that as a comparison.

  • Other than ipads, don't know many tablets without sd card slot - which is funny since brands like Samsung say that putting them in the phone is 'slow' but no issues for a tablet.

    • All of Samsung's Tablets and Lenovo's tabs have MicroSD card slots. They haven't (to my knowledge) ever manufactured a tablet that lacks one.

Hugo Barra (who was the VP of Android and VP of Xiaomi at one stage) famously said the same thing about MicroSD cards and why they suck for performance.

"You think you're buying like a Kingston or a SanDisk but you're actually not, and they're extremely poor quality, they're slow, they sometimes just stop working, and it gives people huge number of issues, apps crashing all the time, users losing data, a lot of basically complaints and customer frustration. It's gonna be a while before you finally accept that maybe the reason why it's not performing is because you put in an SD card, right? You're gonna blame the phone, you're gonna blame the manufacturer, you're gonna shout and scream and try to get it fixed, so many different ways until you say, 'Actually, let me just take the SD card out and see what happens.'"

"It is a trend: SD cards will disappear," Barra added. "You should basically not expect SD card slots in any of our flagships."

Which explains why most of Xiaomi's flagship tablets and their upper-end smartphones lack MicroSD even though their Chinese competitors offer one at similar price points. But I think Lenovo and Samsung both know their customers want MicroSD to stay and if they didn't offer it, people would ditch Android and just go iPad.

  • You can probably pick up some older gen minimally used tablets from gumtree/fb for a lot less than $750.

  • I would recommend the Samsung A9 Plus but it's not on sale at the moment. I wouldn't pay more than $299 for the 4gb/64gb model.

It also has a kid's mode.

The Lenovo M11 would be my 2nd choice. $199 is a great price.

  • If you are after something faster, consider a Lenovo Tab P12 from the good guys commercial ($540 last time I checked). The processor is a MediaTek Dimensity 7050 which is roughly double the speed of a G88.
