Nintendo Switch Purchasing Soon

Hi all,

I need to purchase a Nintendo Switch for my daughter's birthday. However I know nothing about Switches. Could someone recommend which model and where to purchase before 5/6/24 for the best deal?

Any help appreciated!

Switch OLED is the latest and best model available. Look for deals on that one. Make sure it's an "OLED Model".

Worth noting that an all-new Switch is rumoured before March 2025.

    Honestly,

Just check out Facebook market place for a second hand that throws in a few games. You will easily find one in great condition and you can low ball an offer (the one I did the seller accepted straight away and I thought I would have to go back and forth on a price). Plus your daughter won't know the difference between an OLED model and a normal one. And you'll save more $$$. It is the Ozbargain way!

    • This is the way..

    • I wouldn't normally go this path, but given how close the Switch is to the end of its life, this is probably not a bad idea.

Regardless, the daughter will have an enormous library of great games to play for years either way.

What games she's planning to play?

  • Check the product page on Ozbargain.

Select hide expired for current deals.

OLED is worth getting. Switch 2 is coming soon enough, but you can save that for a future birthday/xmas. Then you can play two player Switch games with her because Switch 2 will surely be backwards compatible.

How old is your daughter? Switch Lite would suit small hands better maybe.

  • Thanks all for the replies, she's 6 years old and wants to play Pokemon although I'm not sure if there is a Pokemon game for her age group that doesn't require a lot of reading etc

So I guess party games and Wii Sports style games would be good for her

The pokemon let's go variant is probably the easy one to do for a 6 yr old

    • Party games and Wii Sports style games where you play together in front of the TV rules out the Switch Lite as it's handheld only.

The secondhand market has really dropped. I was trawling through various capital cities in FB Marketplace, and saw an unpatched for $240.

I agree with other commenters and go the marketplace route and score an OLED switch for $250ish

Inclusions should be main OLED tablet (the bezels are thinner), two joy con controllers, two straps, dock, charger, hand grip

Game recommendations (target $30-40 per game, but usually $50 guarantees quick sale)

Pokémon let’s go eevee or pikachu
Mario party superstars (make sure it says superstars as there’s another version “super Mario party” which isn’t as great)
    Mario kart
    Princess peach showtime
Kirby and the forgotten land or all star allies

If she still likes Pokémon she can go to Pokémon legends Arceus

You can resell the games back for similar price

  • For a 6 year old I'd probably recommend a Switch Lite - it should be much cheaper on FB marketplace (aim for less than $150), much lighter to hold, more colour options, and durable so she can take it anywhere and could survive a few drops.

I bought a near-new Switch OLED from FB marketplace last week for $360 - aside from the default accessories (dock, power supply, etc), the seller also threw in spare screen protectors, a 3rd party grip, and a game. It is a premium-feeling device and looks fantastic, but I would say it might be slightly heavy for a 6 year old (OLED model is 420g; while the Lite model is 277g), and I really don't think it will survive being tossed around or dropped on the floor.

I've never really seen Nintendo Switches get reduced by much during sales anywhere so I would definitely explore the FB marketplace option as suggested by everyone else. Games are also great to pick up for cheap at FB marketplace. Just make sure you do your due diligence on the seller before you commit to a sale (ie if the seller has other items for sale, how long have they been a member of FB, etc); and if possible, always pay by cash on pick-up.

Thanks for all the advice everyone! I managed to get an OLED switch from the jb hi-fi sale for $449. With her birthday coming in the next few days we didn't have time to trawl marketplace. I also picked up a copy of Mario party superstars and Pokemon lets go so I'm sure she will enjoy it

Can anyone recommend a screen protector and a wireless controller? I haven't seen any deals on the Nintendo pro at all

    • Congrats on the purchases! Great game choices to start off

      Glass screen protector

Or from eBay to save a few bucks

Unfortunately no sale of the controllers at the moment
Last time I checked sales was 2 weeks ago

    • Good choice. Let’s Go Eevee and Mario Party were life when my girl was 6.

Screen protector? Anything will do, but I never bothered.

Wireless controller, the only good one is the offical switch pro-controller. But if it’s for you kid, don’t worry about it. It’s going to be too big. The switch comes with a controller dock to turn the joycons onto a “normal” controller. My kid never used it though. Just held the joycons in each hand.

  • David Jones is the only one doing a sale on the Switch games at the moment.
I only discovered yesterday after buying from JB Hifi.
    Far out.

  • Silly question. What are the differences between the 2 below?

Nintendo Switch - OLED Model with Neon Red & Neon Blue Joy-Con Region-Free

Nintendo Switch Console OLED Model - Neon
