Ideas Needed for Home Improvement of an Extension

I recently purchased a home that has had an extension put on the rear of the property over the years.

The issue I am finding now coming into winter is that the extended part of the home which is where the Kitchen and Living room is becomes quite cold. The floorboards feel like ice at night.

I am thinking of adding insulation underneath to the extended part of the house but I am also after ideas to close it up all around so it isn't so exposed and reduce the cold air getting in.

I am after ideas on how I can close it up and what would look the nicest.

Thanks in advance!

  • adding insulation underneath

What about walls and the ceiling? Well insulated?

    • Yeah the ceiling has sarking and insulation. I'm not sure about the walls though.

    How about some cladding?

    All depends on your budget.
Cement sheeting to close in the underneath, and if your budget allows then insulate the underfloor area

  • Are the floorboards just bare on joists then straight through to the outside?

If so, should be able to retrofit insulation underneath (cant see why foil types wouldn't work) and then board on top of that (masonite for example).

    • Thanks for that idea.

Yeah the floorboards on top of the subfloor which sits directly on the joists.

Ceiling, floor then walls is the recommended approach for insulating a house.

Looks like the access to do underfloor is pretty good. Knauf do an R2.5 glass wool with a wind barrier for underfloor at Bunnings or low irratent polyester can be had at up to R2.5 from specialist insulation places…

Currently looking to do this to my place, the floors are always cold, even in rooms with carpet and underlay.

You have good access, which makes it an easy DIY job. I'd check the ceiling and do that first if it hasn't got any insulation. I did my place with polyester under the floor. Fibreglass would be unpleasant to install when you're working under it.

Underfloor DIY can be batts held up by chicken wire (or equivalent) or you can get insulated hard boards and just glue them to the subfloor. Professional option is spray on (I guess you could DIY this as well but I wouldnt). I have batts and chicken wire under my floor (Canberra), cant say definitively it makes much difference since I have nothing to compare it to, but it cant hurt. Doesnt stop the house getting cold though

As others have said, walls should be looked at (probably not DIY) and obviously look at gaps and leakages around windows and so forth. Do you have good heavy curtains over the windows? Lined black out curtains are a good start (can be 'cheap' at Ikea or Spotlight etc) and if practicable some honeycomb blinds as well (buy online, much cheaper). Dealing with the windows has definitely made a difference. Add a few rugs to the floor.
