Coles Mastercard Prepaid - Pay at Auspost

Hi champs,

Today I used my coles mastercard prepaid giftcard to make a payment for my water rate at Australia Post, when I swiped it, it's only shown savings or cheque. I haven't tried the cheque yet as the lady was getting pissed after serval failure pressing the savings with pin prompt and I didnt press any pin but enter

I will try it tmr in different auspost, but wanna ask you all if pressing cheque is the correct way, no credit opt appear, only 2 options: cheque or savings

I'd like your champs' input so i can save my trip if not work out.

  • fwiw, when i get refunds to a card, i just hit enter without putting a pin. it just works.

    • how's about payment? especially at auspost?

Also works. They just print a receipt and ask to manually sign it with a pen instead.

Technically they're supposed to cross-check signature with the one at the back of the card, but never seen that actually happen.

Savings is the correct selection for debit cards too. Just how it works.

I think your water company only accepts a debit card if paying in person. If paying by credit card you have to to do it online.

Australia Post is one merchant where you should be specific on the type of payment method you want to use. I once had a staff member show me their screen when I was paying an electricity bill, and I could see the following payment options they could choose from:

    • Visa
    • Mastercard
    • eftpos
    • Cash
    • Cheque (i.e. personal cheque)

This more-or-less is in line with this information page on the type of payment methods accepted by Australia Post.

The issue is that not all Post Billpay billers will accept Mastercard as payment methods in-person at Australia Post. An example of this is the ATO, where they only accept eftpos, cash and cheque as payment methods.

The question is whether the biller in your case actually accepts Mastercard as a payment method for in-person payments. When you present (in your case, swipe) a card on an EFTPOS terminal, the Savings (SAV) and Cheque (CHQ) options are for routing a payment through the eftpos network. The issue is that Coles Mastercard gift cards do not support the eftpos network, so you have to choose Credit (CR) on the EFTPOS terminal to route the payment through the Mastercard network. If you ask to pay via Mastercard and there is no Credit (CR) option on the EFTPOS terminal, it means you cannot use a Coles Mastercard gift card as a payment method.

    • Thank you Wookie, i even had read your Q&A post before the post after trip 😂 thank you for your input
May i ask if we can ask to pay via Mastercard?

      • Yep, you should ask.

When I use Post Billpay in-person and the staff member asks how I want to pay, I always specify the card network I want to use (e.g. Visa, Mastercard, eftpos). Every single staff member has understood what I have meant.

Btw, is there anything stopping you from using Post Billpay online or through the AusPost app?

        • If you pay online, you can use Mastercard or Visa. (I cannot see an option to use PayPal.)

        • If you pay through the AusPost app, you can use Mastercard, Visa or PayPal.

        • Tried it and this is the error message

The billpay code cannot be paid via this service at this time. Please refer to your bill for an alternative form of payment.

I can use the rate’s portal to pay but have a charge .78% so try to find some alternatives

          • @ginger-gin: That's peanuts charge. Try paying for coffee or at a restaurant using a credit card, 1.5 - 2% average.

No need to go to Australia Post, just pay it over the phone or internet like a civilised person.

A lot of billers don't accept credit card payment at the post office. Some only accept it with a surcharge. Looks like you found the former.
