Cat5 not worth it at all.!

    • -1

I have no idea what Cat5 means, just wants to check if ethernet port is working as my WiFi has been getting naughty recently.

      • +8

Specs say cat5 , but i know thease telstra cables, and legalitys. Thease are cat5E

Cat 5e is rated at 1000megabits but regular cat5 can get 1000megabits at short lengths, but only rated for 100megabits

        • +4

I use Cat5E patch cables even for 2.5G connections lol

          • -7

            @bazingaa: I can't believe it can even reach 1Gbps

            • @sicaboy: I can't believe it's not butter!

            • @sicaboy: I get iperf3 ~2.3-2.4 Gbps, that's limited by the NIC though.

        • +4

my home got hard wired with cat5e and cat6
those cat5e ones lengths over 10m still able to achieve 1Gb speed
So this 3m cables shouldn't be a problem

      • Just curious, what you mean by WiFi getting naughty?

        • Wifi light shows green but can't connect to it until 20 mins after reboot. Mine is gen 2 that is 5+ years old. And I'm with superloop nbn

    • +2

The cable in the image says cat5e on it?

      • +1

Specs section incorrectly lists just Cat5.

      • The description in specification says cat 5.

        Not sure which is correct.

      • +3

Forget what it says in the spec on the web page. It's a Cat5e cable. Original Cat5 cables haven't been made in many years.

    • +3

oh shit,, almost purchased ,, and they need my passport details or driving license details for this purchase,, BS

      • +2

Yeah every purchase is like that with T. It's insane. They will make you sign for delivery and everything.

      • +7

Don't worry, they're a large corporate telecom and will keep your data safe. /s

        • +1

That is what we expect, but unfortunately that is not the case.. If they expect my driving license or PPT details to sell $2 item, then there is something terribly wrong with their (or large corporate telecom's ) business model :) ..

          • +2

@chutibuti: It's more "something wrong with their software portal".

Rather than make a distinction between products where they actually need to identify you, and ones that they don't, they just make it a requirement across the board. Less coding effort, less troubleshooting. Shit for the customer, but they don't care about the customer.

            • @Dalryk: Like Google, you are not the customer, you are the product. The govo is Telstra's only customer they care about.

      Buy and save T-jobs

      • +1

No, closing down sale. Selling former CEO Ziggy Switkowski's erhernet cord left in the bottom drawer.

        • That must be a 20 year old memorabilia

        • +1

The one that stops working after 3gb of data goes through it?

          • @hambuger: Ziggy didn't think anyone needed connectivity above 28.8kbps

        • right next to the monster HDMI cable from Gerry

    • Sure Cat5 is not worth it as it only is rated for 100Mbps. But Cat5e might be worth it as it officially supports 1000Mbps (Gigabit) Ethernet. These are Cat5e cables. e stands for Enhanced

  • +4

For any wondering, thease are a Cat5E cables. And ive speedtested 900+ Megabits per second. The copper aint bad quality either.

    • +20

The copper aint bad quality either.

And likely cheaper $ per m than the government paid Telstra for the rest of their copper

  • +2

I thought it was a Tesla cable

  • -1

This can be used for something else

    • +8

      Skipping rope?

Was this a question or a statement?

      • -1

        Clothes line

      • +1

It's Cat5, so it will be perfect for skipping

    • +2

Lol no idea why this guy got negged, he/she just wants to tie knots.

      • +4

bro you sent me to youtube reels, took me an hour to realise I'm supposed to work.

        • +3

Why do you think I spend 30 mins in loo.

    • +23

These are just the cables they unplugged from those employees' computers.

    • Not exactly but I see what you mean. It's not like we can save 2.8k jobs by not having this bargain

    • +1

They are being replaced by AI bots

  • -3

hah used to be free and included with their modems but not no more by looks of it

    • +2

3 metres? Nah. You still get a shitload of other shorter length cables.

    • +1

You usually get 2 or 3 cables with the modems still. These are longer ones.

    • +1

used to be free and included with their modems

It's not free if you have to buy a service, or the modem.

      • That's true.

However Telstra used to send you a modem with 4g backup when you signed up for NBN DSL provisioning and let you keep it if you didn't qualify for NBN dsl based technologies.
I live in the bush and it's a good 10km+ to the local exchange, they still kept trying to connect me to dsl all the same.

The 4G backup sim would then work for between 3 and 6 months after the service failed to provision. Good memories, decent speed using a night hawk hung 10m up a tree at the front of the property to get 4G reception.

  • +5

FYI I think this is rated for 1000mbit but when I used it in my tp-link omada setup between an ax3000 AP and a poe switch, it displayed a 100mbit link speed. Swapped it out for a Belkin cable and it came back up at 1000.

No idea if mine was faulty, damaged, or an older batch, and I'm not suggesting this one linked above will be the same. But just managing expectations and asking for you to confirm before you install it in a ceiling and then have to pull it back through the wall because you didn't check the link speed first 🙃

    • -1

Surely your registered cabler would check before putting it in the ceiling for you?

    • -1

Technically you shouldn't be running patch cables through ceilings or walls.

      • I do it all the time without issue.

      • +1

In my professional capacity, sure, but at home I'm running it from the top of a ventilated cupboard where my home lab lives to the ceiling corner 50cm away, so a short patch cable is fine.

  • -1

Do they come with bumper stickers: Telstra inside ?

  • I keep getting payment failed. Tried multiple cards.

    • Revolut disposable card works.

  • I get 10gb in cat5e it will be fine!

    • It will be fine but important to remember the electrons can’t go around a corner too fast.

  • +3

Sign in process and ID verification not worth the trouble.

    • exactly, why should one verify for a 2$ cable

    • Love to have to receive a 2FA notification, login to the app with a PIN, then have to update the app, then login to the app again, just to approve a 2FA to pay my bill! Thanks Telstra.

      • well, you can just save the Bpay details to your banking app and just set up monthly transfer or do it manually each month if you prefer uness you are paying the a credit card of course.

        • I'm sure you're right, they're doing it to try to force people into direct debit and discourage credit cards.

  • +1

pro tip: just "borrow" your patch cables from the server room at your work. don't worry, it's okay if it's plugged into something

  • -1

These are the spare cables from all the workers they just sacked - trying to clear out their offices already!

  • dont people throw this stuff out? lmao

    • Not Telstra .. it likes to achieve top dollar on even heavily oxidized copper cabling

      • It'll cost them more to pack and ship this shit.

  • +2

Ah. Paying Telstra for copper - still in 2024. Gotta give them points for determination.

  • +1

A true ozbargainer from days gone by would have seen the RJ11 cable for $1 and let 10 megabit suffice.

  • I am getting the following message after entering my details..

    Something went wrong
We're unable to process the order at this time.

    Anyone else?

  • I think I have enough dividend from my initial T1 shares to afford one. maybe 2

  • +2

True ozbargainers get their network cable from skips when offices are being refurbished. Or maybe at the end of a uni year when the dorms get cleaned out. Still using some freebies from '07, a great vintage for network cables

  • +1

to those without Telstra ID, you may try your boostmobile ID, if you have it.

  • +1

I’ve got a box of these cables; the man was tasked with cleaning out the offices of a company he worked for when it folded. They were just dumping stuff in the skip so we got some office furniture, cables, stationery, etc. Since we went wireless we haven’t even looked at them.

    • +1

Yes it came with every Telstra Smart Modems and probably various other older model Telstra modems. Businesses must have been dumping these cables in bins. Good old E-waste.

  • +1

Times must be tough to be paying for a cat5 cable. Good luck mate

  • -1

Got these with my Telstra modems in the past. Not great cables tbh
