Laptop Recommendations for Work and Streaming Shows/Films

I'll preface this by saying I'm not an expert with computers at all.

I would like a laptop for use at work (preparing documents, use of video conferencing) as well as for watching Netflix in my personal time. I don't play games. Lightweight and touch screen are important.

I currently use a surface pro but am getting annoyed by the kick stand. I also use it connected to a larger display screen when I am working from home.

I would ideally like something that will last me several years. Not looking for a refurbished machine. I have no idea how much this type of laptop would typically cost so no idea what budget expectations would be reasonable.

Would be most grateful for thoughts or recommendations please.

Oh and hoping to buy before June 30.

Thank you in advance for helping a complete novice

  • Are you iOS or Android?

If you were iOS I'd recommend as others have already a MacBook (or iPad). As an android user you're perhaps less accustomed to Continuity and the utility of working across several devices. Personally I've just upgraded to an Apple Slilcon iPad with a Magic Keyboard which so far is working great as a notebook alternative. It's lightweight with solid battery endurance, ideal for consuming media and I can input via touchscreen, trackpad and hardware keyboard. You can connect an external display too.

        • Thank you. I'd never considered an ipad before. Can you use windows on it?

@me: No, but do you really need Windows? You can get MS Office for iPad.

            • @sumyungguy: I've struggled to adapt when using apple products to be honest and would prefer to stick with a system that I'm used to - but fair point! :)

        • Technically all iPad's are Apple Silicon :)

  • Honestly if you aren’t using it for gaming a MacBook Air M2 or M3 will do everything you need for most work scenarios and will last a significantly long time.

Great screen, far better sound than you’ll find in most laptops, excellent battery life, lightweight and can charge easily via USB C. Funnily enough performance per dollar is also very good and actually outperforms laptops in their class for a similar price in CPU/GPU.

Irrespective of windows/android I have always had MacBook laptops and have never been disappointed.

    • Even an M1 MacBook Air would be sufficient. My old 2015 MBA lasted until this year, and that was only because the battery died (replaced it and sold it though)

    • OP said touch screen is important, that's the only thing missing from the MacBooks for OP

      • Ahh yup!

        Missed that requirement sorry OP!

I reckon touchscreens are over-rated on laptops, anyway!

@ThithLord: Agree, I've had a few work ones that feature it and have never understood the desire, why take your hands away from the main input devices of trackpad and keyboard to touch something on the screen and give it lovely fingerprints?

            • @LanceVance: It's useful when providing assistance to another user at their desk, whilst they're sitting in their chair. "Oh, wow, it's touchscreen? Didn't even know that!"

    • Thank you! Yes touch screen is important to me.
