Bonus 7kW Wallbox Charger (First 3,000 Orders, Worth $1,000) with BYD Sealion 6 PHEV (from $48,990 + On-Road Cost) @ BYD

2030

BYD announced their Sealion 6 plug-in hybrid this week and are offering a complimentary 7kW wallbox charger worth $1K RRP for the first 3000 orders. Includes 3m type 2 cable. Excludes installation.

Sealion 6 prices;
Dynamic $48,990 plus on roads
Premium AWD $52,990 plus on roads

This is BYD's first foray into PHEV in Australia, and even for this "skeptical about Chinese cars thinker" here, I'm pretty impressed with the specs and prices of the Sealion 6. Seriously considering the Premium, claimed 5.9 secs 0-100, EV range of roughly 80km and petrol/electric range of over 1000km.

  • This or used Mitsubishi (outlander / eclipse) phev?

    • +3

      This, easy.

    • +1

Better tech, better equipment and V2L for 20k less. Depends on how much you value the mitsi badge and reliability

    • Rooting for Mitsubishi with my own phev experience

  • +4

BYD's PHEVs are the epitome of their technology. IMHO, their PHEVs are better than EVs. However, please note that their fifth-generation product has been released, and the Sealion 6 should be using fourth-generation technology.

Indeed, the current prices are noticeably different compared to the Chinese market, but based on my experience in China, a price war is inevitable as more brands enter the market. So if you're not in a hurry to buy a car, hold on to your money. There will be many surprises in the car market over the next 2-3 years.

    • It feels like in China atleast, that it's at the peak of over supply. Brands will have to merge or go bust.

    • +1

I'm desperate for an EV (or maybe PHEV) but just can't pull the trigger with the rapid changes.

      • The changes aren’t that significant. The current tech is excellent, high quality batteries and management systems and very efficient and powerful motors.

EV tech is already making ICE obsolete. It’s only price that is the problem.

Any complimentary fish for the sealion? Imagine the stink when it's garaged in one spot.

  • Anyone know what happened to the Tesla post?

    • The post from roughly 3 hours ago? OP requested deletion.

      • +1

Yes I realise op requested it. Just wondering why

        • +1

I don't think he was posting a proper deal so he got it deleted.

    • what will happen to tesla in the general market in the next few years - disappear

      • Why do you think they will disappear?
Their cars are still very good. The updated model Y and assuming the model 2 does appear and is as good as their current cars they should continue their current trajectory.

        • Tesla will be around, but their once dominance will shrink, given Elon.

3 weeks ago - Elon sacks Supercharger staff
2 weeks ago - Former supercharger find jobs elsewhere
1 week ago - Elon starts rehiring former staff, but some have got better paying jobs.
          Dolp

        • Tesla can't compete in the new ev world , the cars are too expensive, production cost is too high and if the trade war with China happens they won't have any batteries to sell with the car .
Google or look up on X what kind of a car you can get for $30 K in china now and you will be amazed

          • @botchie: Yet they had the worlds best selling car last year
Lots of companies are about to struggle
It appears that Tesla is better placed than most to survive

tldr: bought a holden, in accident, still waiting for parts

      • Thanking you. Great summary.

    • Had an '04 escape that got into an accident, 7 months in the shop waiting for parts. Didn't bother me, I had a rental car that was only 4000kms old

  • What's the boot size like? We have a 2023 Tiguan Allspace that fits the double pram, dog & other shit we need for a baby + toddler. Would this thing compete for space?

    • Tiguan Allspace MY24 is 700/1775, BYD 425/1440
So you will need to fit less shit in the BYD :-)

      • Cheers, thanks for that…waiting a while longer then for a good hybrid or EV that's big enough!

        • +3

Wait a bit longer then you won't need a double pram.

          • @z28: True, but then I'll have two small bicycles, sporting gear etc etc. TBH I'm considering a 3rd gen Kia Carnival, super comfy (wife and I are both quite tall, and our kids will be too) and really nice to drive.

        • Maybe the Zeekr 009 that set to be release here soon or a Hybird carnival will fit your lifestyle

  • -1

I won't consider buying it, especially when it can't solve It's own battery safety issue. As I watched a lot news about it. Car crashed and in flame, people were not lucky. :-(

  • I wish they built a true 7 seater like palisade but with a plug in hybrid for a really good price. There is a huge demand for big SUV’s and I haven’t seen many true 7 seaters in the market

  • +2

Just some questions, does PHEV has higher maintenance cost (combustion engine + EV batteries), failure rate (more parts), even more danger in case of accidents ( petrol + batteries)?

    • +1

More danger yes, you're adding 2 different sources. But its not dangerous as a whole. How many prius fires have you heard of?

  • +6

Below is covered for only 3 years.. Not very assuring in my view

    3 years/60,000 kilometers
Multimedia system, Shock absorber, Belt, Dust cover, Bushing or gasket, Release bearing, Wheel bearing, PM2.5 measuring instrument, AC/DC charging port assembly, USB charging port
    connector

    • -2

Yep. Makes me think what they're offering is Chinese junk quality rubbish.

      • -1

Yep. Makes me think what they're offering is Chinese junk quality rubbish.

I'll take advise from US engineering firm Caresoft after tear down of a BYD and their statement that Chinese EVs quality is no rubbish. i'll also listen to Biden's statement that the Chinese EVs are a competitive threat to the US auto industry rather than some xenophobic articmonkey.

        • In a cost of living crisis, do you really think customers give two sh!ts about quality? More like affordability, and bugger the second owner — I've got my warranty.
Bribes are easy to get good reviews, and customers will usually get the cheaper product. It's what this site is about.

    • +1

Advertised as 6 year warranty with 8 years on battery - misleading? What does the ACCC have to say about this sort of stuff?

      • +1

which is the same that goes for every hybrid/EV car made in the last 10 years, where have you been?

  • Something to consider is the location of the charging port and the cable length. The Sealion and Seal have it on the right rear and Atto3 and Dolphin right front.

  • I hope this is using their blade battery and not the pouches that have been catching fire all over the place…..

    • +2

Definitely the blade battery in the Sealion 6.

    • +2

The ol' Burn Your Driveway hey?

  • cleaned one of these the other day….. the interior plastics and carpet was such low quality I'm tempted to tell anyone with a BYD that we don't detail them.

    • +10

Vehicle only announced/released to our market a few days ago and you've cleaned one already?

      • +1

It arrived off the boat dirty.

        • What’s the surf like at Currumbin ?

  • Keen to know petrol consumption without running on battery.

    • -2

      Good luck with that.

NO ONE will tell you … it is an EV … ok? … an EV … with solar is free … stop asking!!!!

      • +1

Its a hybrid, so it uses petrol.

        • -1

          Yes indeed.

Tell that to hybrid users: …it is an EV mate … an EV .. that tailpipe is just a decoration, and the ICE is just an ornament … an EV, ok?

    • +1

4.8L or 5.8L / 100km however based on NDEC so might be around 20-30% more with real world driving conditions.

      • 4.8L or 5.8L / 100km

        Wow!
Closer to a modern and efficient ICE vehicle than I thought !!

We've put our deposit down on one today. Hardest challenge was picking between the dynamic and premium model.

Went with the dynamic, as we value range and efficiency (and 4k) over performance.

    • did you get a chance to test drive?

      • +2

Not yet. We saw a few early reviews on YouTube. Our local dealer is hoping to get both options on display in the next 2 weeks. We checked out the Atto 3 and Seal today.

The deposit is fully refundable anyway. Or you can switch options/colours any time before delivery.

I've been wanting a PHEV for a while, but the Outlander was too much.

    • did you buy accessories? Mats, Ceramic Tint?

      • +1

Grey paint = yes. Mats = yes. Tint (front windows only) = no.

  • only 7kw? man I would want a 22kw 3 phase for that. unless byd's only max out at 7kw AC chargin?

    • +2

Had an EV for 6 years now. Never really needed fast charging yet (mine is 3kw max), and that's been fine.

You just plug in a lot more. At work, shops, sports, dinner, sleeping etc etc.

People get mixed up with the old petrol ways.

      • in queensland is mostly 3 phase AC chargers at shops, restaurants and cafes, and gyms. They are all around 12kw to 22kw depending on your car eg a model 3 does 12kw max AC and a model S does 22kw AC max in the Tesla world. DC charging is a different story. but most people in Queensland will charger from a public AC charger because they are mostly free, and you can stay as long as you like.

        • +1

Public "chargers" need to be fast.
I'd prefer if they all used VIN identification.

You get 20mins charge time max. Then move on.

Couldn't find an available one this week. First time ever.

          • @tunzafun001: no in Queensland you can use public AC chargers as long as you like with out fees, and its free charging. DC chargers from charge fox cost around 45c to 55c depending on speed in queensland. and Tesla DC chargers cost around 60c for a tesla owner and about 75 to 80c for anyone else.

    • Why? When you come home are you under pressure to charge your car in an hour to get half way to Sydney?

People seriously underestimate how much their car stays at home in their driveway

      • free charging is mostly why people charge outside there home, not every one has solar and batterries at home to get free of the grid energy.

        • +1

          “Their” house - not there
          and
“off “ grid - not of

          Sorry ,
one mistake in a sentence I can handle
          but two aaarrrgghh .

      • 18kw? thats pretty bad for DC teslas can do 250kw on DC.

  • Does anyone know roughly how much space is needed and the installation costs for the charger?

  • +1

    95 octane is the killer

    Should of gone 91

    • Its true, 95 octane is selling for about 10% more than 91 octane and each octane increases power efficientcy by ~1% so you are spending more.

      • actually kind of think of it they might need it

there's only 2 situations I know of that requires premium

        1. actual performance cars and no wannabe performance cars
        2. piss weak engines that need higher octane to compensate… like Suzuki Alto 1L engine needs 95 too

I guess 1.5 engine turbo is still 1.5 and needs the premium to compensate

If you look at Toyota traditional hybrid the Camry uses 95 and the Rav4 uses 91… It's the same engine but tuned different. People just end up using E10 which is 94 with 10% sugar cane to counter it

just really sucks using 95… now people will start using E10 on these

  • Are they giving away the free charger for any other BYD cars?

    • Nope.

    • yes just the stock charger hahaha

  • These comments lol, touch grass.

  • +2

Doubtful BYD will even be in business in 2yrs, locked out of US Market with recent 100% tariffs on Chinese evs, and 99% sure EU will follow suit. Add China's domestic market in a freefall. Hard to stay in business with those massive markets blocking them, and no domestic market. And over 360,000 Chinese evs piled up unsold in Belgium and Germany. And yes hybrids are included in tariffs.

Was in shenzhen earlier this year, Chinese economy is in total freefall, 80% companies I used to buy from have all collapsed, most my contacts are unemployed, so many closed boarded up shops, lot unhappy people really bad presently.

    https://youtu.be/E5rjuTUAfz0

    • Yea mate ,
Dodge will be lucky to survive let alone these new to market companies .
Their only chance to sell in numbers is on price in these headwinds .

    • +3

I'd put in big money that it will be, 2 years is too easy a bet, I'd let you stretch it to 5 years. It's one of the largest and most vertically integrated EV companies in China, they control their whole supply chain. Even if shut out of US market it will survive on domestic consumption alone. Not to mention the political will in keeping China's EV industry going

      • Agreed. BYD are one of the few profitable and viable car companies in the world. Most companies are sitting on massive debt and will struggle to survive a downturn. BYD is not one of these. Highly likely that they will be around for decades

        • And if china invades Taiwan? Wheres your warranty then ? Also ever heard of Evergreen?
