What's Happening at ShopBack? Layoffs, Vacancies and NZ Launch

Time for a ShopBack discussion. ShopBack seems to be having some technical glitches and several inaccurate T&Cs with the complication of St George Bank, Bank of Melbourne and BankSA added recently.

I've been a member of ShopBack since end of Dec 2022 and had tracking & incorrect cashback issues from the start. The store rep, previous GYB helped to fix after several DMs and reminders. It appears the new GYB (since April 2024) isn't familiar with some of the T&Cs and less helpful.

The most recent discrepancy is eBay on 3rd May. Still waiting to be tracked correctly and seems to affect everyone.

(1) On 19th March 2024, ShopBack reduced the size of the team by 195 roles or 24% of the staff. This seems to coincide with a break in posting or commenting from the store rep GYB.

According to Scotty, GYB is a store account that is shared by multiple individuals, sometimes at the same time:

(2) Surprisingly similar to Cashrewards, ShopBack has been advertising for staff in Australia and around the world despite the recent layoffs.

(Cashrewards: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/832716 16 positions listed today at Cashrewards, up from 14 positions in March)

ShopBack Australia has 7 open positions advertised currently: https://corporate.shopback.com/careers#job-section

Number of positions advertised at ShopBack by country:
(In view of recent IT issues, ShopBack probably needs a new software engineer in Australia that is not an intern)

  • HongKong: 2
  • Indonesia: 4
  • Malaysia: 20 include Python Developer (Intern); and Contract SOX Auditor & Cybersecurity Risk Specialist
  • Philippines: 4
  • Singapore: 8 include Python Developer (Intern); Information Security (Intern); and Software Engineer (Intern) - Backend
  • Taiwan: 2 include Software Engineer (Intern) - Backend
  • Thailand: 1
  • Vietnam: 4 include Software Engineer - Backend; Software Engineer (Intern) - Backend; and Software Engineer (Intern) - QA

(3) ShopBack has launched in New Zealand at the end of April. The same staff in Australia is probably servicing New Zealand and overworked. It may explain the mistakes made during the upsized Priceline Pharmacy/bank bonuses around the same time. I had spent some time convincing GYB before the mistakes were acknowledged https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/15200473/redir

What do you all think?

Not much competition as there are very few good offers from Cashrewards or TopCashback. I haven't used them recently.

Since the recent stuff-ups from ShopBack and previous GYB gone, I haven't been online shopping via ShopBack. I'm a bit over dealing with the staff who seem to copy and paste the responses.

However ShopBack seems great for buying gift cards especially with the bank bonuses particularly St George Bank/Bank of Melbourne. One may have to get in early to ensure the bonus is tracked due to the limited redemptions available.

Cashback programs are probably not sustainable in the long term anyway.

Edit: Just found out TA is back but at TopCashback. Woohoo!

New GYB is literally useless - just says to email ShopBack who are no help

Consumer Affairs are not entirely useless if you have enough evidence, just saying

    • +1

Staff seem to be clueless and new to SB. IT staff are probably interns with the recent technical issues. They are looking for several interns in their ads overseas

    • +1

Og GYB was the only damn thing holding SB together too smh…

Exactly. If we wanted copied and pasted or unhelpful responses, we'd use the email channel.

These offshored monotone template responses do my head in. I called an Australian yesterday at Energy Locals and got my issue solved straight away within minutes

With these offshored templated people, it can take weeks or months. I sometimes need to contact an executive by LinkedIn or email to get the issue resolved or report them to an authority.

All hail new king of cashback provider top cashback.

With issues affecting almost everyone, writing and complaining to consumer affairs is probably the fastest way for the problem to be solved.

  • The fact that the website is not maintained says it all. App only approach is a turnoff for me personally. E.G. Click the "Westpac" link on the website and you get nothing. Same with gift cards etc.

    • Previous GYB mentioned that not many members use the website so some of the deals (eg gift cards) are app only. It shouldn't be an excuse not to maintain the website.

Users have recommended to shop via the app as it seems to track better. I would have preferred to shop on the website but was forced to use the app.

I've found Shopback to be great lately. Much improved from what it was at the start. I lost out in the first few months some cashback which didn't track right, but since using the app over the last year I've made over $500 from them which all tracked correctly and I've withdrawn.

Not really sure about the rest of your post and why it's relevant listing how much they're hiring Etc.? Don't even know who GYB is.

Isn't this just a long way to complain about the fact that the eBay claim didn't track? That should be on you to not buy anything you wouldn't already without cashback?

It paints a better picture into understanding what is happening at ShopBack. E.g. there are IT issues and IT jobs are advertised.

Previous GYB was the key person that resolved the issues or asked the team to. We don't know who but it didn't matter. There could have been more than one GYB but they were all helpful.

The discrepancies and glitches were already experienced in early April (before the eBay issues). Some of us had dealt with the new GYB and it was obvious a different person was operating the account.

I had also spent some time sorting out the discrepancies on the Priceline Pharmacy/bank bonus offer in April. Didn't realise it was going to get worse after with the eBay offer. There are also issues with Amazon tracking.

If I was going to buy anyway, it could be a choice of shopping:
      - via ShopBack (getting more discount with cashback but cannot pay with gift cards) or
      - don't use cashback sites but can pay with gift cards or other payment

I would still use ShopBack for gift cards but not for other shopping till they resolve the issues mentioned.

Surprisingly similar to Cashrewards, ShopBack has been advertising for staff in Australia and around the world despite the recent layoffs.

What's surprising about that? Are the roles the same or different, reconfigured, etc.?

Businesses need to rightsize, optimize their business as they grow, the environment changes and to fix past mistakes.

    • +1

      That's a complete cop out.

Laying off a quarter of staff is a form of inept management that lacks foresight.

  • Has anyone tried referring a friend lately?

I've looked through the app and website and for the life of me can't find the option to refer.

The instructions on the website and info/faq on how to do so are inaccurate or out of date.

    • @Porker I only use the app and it's on the "account" page where you see your purchased gift cards, cashback and available amounts to withdraw.
Tap on Account at the bottom right hand side.
Somewhere in the middle, underneath Enable biometric ID, there is a section called Referrals (below Promos, next to Transactions and Rewards).
Tap on Referrals and your unique code is under "Refer a Friend" on the middle of page.
Let me know if you find it, otherwise I will take a screenshot.

      • +1

I'm blind! Thanks for into. I clicked on that 'referral' page/section so many times but I was looking for a link (to send to recipient).

Code is 5 or 6 digits.
