  • Seems a long time since a good Pic's special. Already got a shelf filled with Mayver's but will grab a few of these. I prefer Pic's in taste, but find it more dry (less oil) compared to Mayver's Crunchy, it's even more dry than Mayver's Dark Roasted…some may prefer that but I like the oil.

    • +2

Mayvers fan here. Don't understand the hype over pics. Each to their own i guess. Tried to mayvers with salted caramel?

      • +1

Pic's has a richer, more intense roasted nut flavour. It's like Whittaker's chocolates and their intense cocoa flavour compared to Cadbury's sugary, oily, war-rationing ersatz chocolate. Mayver's is a bit more watered-down, diluted, weak and their consistency tends to be a lot less thicker compared to Pic's as well.

        • Comparison with Bega?

          • @Mr Bob Dobalina: Depends on what for. I'm sure to disappoint all the peanutbutterphiles / purists but IMO:

For use in cooking (cookies, sauces, etc) and dips - good stuff like this, mayvers, etc.

For sandwiches - nasty sugary salty added vegetable oily cheap bega all the way.

            • @fantombloo: I'm going to send the peanutbutterphiles / purists mad and say I like a combo special of Bega Smooth and Pics Crunchy… best of both worlds

            • +1

@fantombloo: Bega simply nuts is in glass jars and doesn’t contain sugar or salt. It’s made from 100% Aussie peanuts and is very high quality.

              • @bashar20:

Bega simply nuts is in glass jars

I read that without the "is" at first glance. That would not be good for the peanut butter.

          • +1

@Mr Bob Dobalina: IMHO Mayvers if still Aussie peanuts (some are now imported peanuts check the label) > Bega> Pics NZ
BTW Mayvers Tahini Kosher/Halal is great - try both hulled and unhulled
Last time i bought Pics I had to add 1/3 cup EVOO to make it spreadable

        • Spoken like a true PB connoisseur

        • mayvers is watered down!?

      • Agreed! My fav is Mayvers dark roasted peanut butter.

  • +1

Sorry I know this is a Pics deal but does anyone else have this problem with Mayvers pb: you know when you open a new jar and start consuming the pb and when you get to the bottom you start scraping the bits you've missed at the top half of the jar. Why does that part taste so bitter?

    • +5

I try to get to those bits well before the jar is empty.

Many say to stir the oil in when you open the jar for the first time. But I stir the oil in every single time the jar is opened, otherwise it's a little more dry at the end.

    • +6

turn the jar upside down & leave for a few hours then open it, then always stir when you use it

    • Thanks, yeah I do that too. Always stir before eating. I'm just more curious as to the why. Why does it turn bitter? I'm sure it's something science-y

      • peanut butter can get mouldy. i wonder if the lack of oil speeds up that process

  • Where is this made? Noticing a majority of peanut butters are sourced from overseas.

I refuse to buy food from overseas when we’re more than capable of growing it locally.

    • +2

      New Zealand

      • Made in NZ with ingredients from somewhere else? Like their frozen fish that are supplied to Aus.

        • Yes, peanuts from Australia, Brazil, Argentina according to their site. You can look up the batch on their site to get the breakdown. I read a while ago they were working to get peanut production going in NZ as Aus doesn't produce enough.

      • Does nz count as local these days?

        • It’s local enough. NZ is good at marketing food products due to their ‘green image’, year-round green grass, and comparable food standards,

A few products are clearly better. I’m not sure if peanut butter is though.

Buy Bega simply nuts. 100% Aussie

Yes no need to fly this stuff in, Mayvers is better and cheaper on sale. Win win. This is Ozbargain after all, why pay more!

  • I prefer Thai Honey, thanks

  • +2

So long as its Australian made/owned/sourced.

    • You should get Mayver’s instead then

      • +1

No longer fully Australian, they changed to imported ingredients on the label

        • Didn’t realise. The jar in my pantry is a bit old I guess

    • You should get Bega simply nuts. See my earlier comment.

  • Time to stock up!

  • Pic’s has gotten a lot worse in quality after they stopped using exclusively Australian peanuts. I wondered if it was just me not remembering how it used to be, but I picked up a jar of Ridiculously Delicious peanut butter, which does still use Aussie peanuts, and it tasted like how Pic’s used to. But unfortunately it’s even more expensive, so mostly getting Mayver’s dark roast these days

    • Bega simply nuts 100% Aussie.
