Any reccomendations?

Can highly reccomend All Trails app for people who like to track stats their outdoor activites. Pretty comprehensive database of hiking, trail running and biking maps.

  • FWIW All Trails is pretty poorly regarded by hardcore bushwalkers, not a single member from the two clubs I'm a leader within use it as their core navigation app - I agree it's very user friendly & as such is well supported by leisure hikers. But once you start to do your own walks & offtrail etc it's often a tad lagging behind others. The fully paid version is ok - but the free version is really significantly handicapped in terms of its functionality.

Still an excellent app, just depends on what type of hiking you're doing.

    • What nav app do you use?

Yeah, I fell for the user interface. Agree it's really for well known tracks, so perfect if your doing trails overseas to mark a memory. I'm not game enough to try offtrail!

      • Agree All Trails is 'purty' and most hikers start out using it, no harm in it - and as stated it's very capable for many walks - but has serious limitations even on the fully paid version.

The really good hikers with both groups use Gaia GPS, nearly all say it's the best by far - but is expensive and has (from reports) a decent learning curve. I'm relatively new to hiking but already a leader within both groups, I use Mapy.cz and also Avenza (free version) and download the 1:25k Getlost topo maps for it.

Mapy is excellent for basic stuff - all of NSW is ~1gb so you can have for offline use. Avenza Free limits having 3 maps loaded into it at once - but thats not an issue at all for 99% of hikes. The Getlost maps are absolute top shelf for details/info - comparable with anything on the market.

I have both loaded - total price $0. Don't even need a sim card in to have full functionality - as uses GPS signal only.

        • Thanks for those suggestions. How do you find the battery drain with those apps?

          • @txb: I don't find issues with them. Mapy doesn't have customising of GPS pings, Avenza does. IMHO you get better results just ensuring your phone is on FLIGHT mode when you're out with no reception otherwise it's constantly searching for one which is a big drainer.

        • Mapy has the most ridiculous registration process I have ever seen. They require your email and phone number and you have to send an SMS to a foreign phone number which most pre-paid sims (here in Oz and many other countries) can not do.

          • @bulletmark: Agree, if you want to register Mapy it is a tad of a PITA - but really not much more than other apps that require registration. For the positives it has vs other hiking apss I think it's a tad 'old man yells at cloud' to bemoan this too much - takes 5mins to do and really you don't need to do much, I just set up a burner email address with them (you can do one with any other email etc) - I think you can use it unregistred if you like too? But it won't save your activities etc.

Good interface, offline map downloads, very VERY small map size, good map details, GPX import & export, tracker. All for free, hard to beat IMHO.

I'm on Aldi prepaid and was able to send the SMS to Czech republic no issues.

            • @Daniel Plainview: Not sure you read my comment properly. "you have to send an SMS to a foreign phone number". How is a burner email address gonna help?

              • @bulletmark: No I read it correctly. You also need an email address for a Mapy account - so I used a burner one for that i.e setup an email address which I never intedned to use for anything else. I find it handy not to use my main mail address.

And the SMS, as I stated worked no issues from an Aldi prepaid account - are you sure you're placing the 0011 before the foreign number?

Gaia is popular amongst my riding friends, but I prefer Osmand. Both use the same (default) map, OpenStreetMap. Osmand gives you more map on the screen, Gaia wastes a lot of screen space. I find Osmand more intuitive, but that's subjective. Gaia has good cloud integration while Osmand you can gerry-rig cloud via Google Drive. Free Osmand has limited map updates and no contours, but there's a trick (on Android, not sure about Apple) to get around this, otherwise a relatively cheap subscription.

      Just like you😂😂😂

  • I assume you already have it but trip view the paid version is like a must if you use any sort of public transport so you can save your trips instead of remaking them every time

If you are looking for a game brotato premium is pretty good

"That Shopping List" is great. $8 to remove ads.

I use "Square Home" launcher, paid for that, though it's not to everyones taste.

My most used app is Tasks. The actual premium price is ridiculously high, but if you try it and like it you can donate to the dev.

    • I love Tasks! I was going to buy the premium with my survey $ until I saw the price. Honestly the premium features don't even seem worth it, not sure what the thought process is there.

I bought Clean My House premium, it's a good app that keeps track of when I need to get things done.

Just Run. Best C25K app around. No bloat even with the free version. Premium in-app is worth it if you find value in the app.

Polytopia. The game is free with 4 basic tribes and additional tribes are $1.50 each. It's such a well polished game and really fun to play with friends. It's like Civilization but simplified and without the huge time commitment.

BG Stats if you play board games and like to nerd out with stats.

Make your own app similar to the old Woo Woo Wisdom app and use it to funnel the money to yourself.

SD Maid 1 + SD Maid 1 Pro (Paid key) : must have in any android devices in my opinion. Very useful with system cleaner function, app cleaner, corpse finder after uninstall app, find duplicate files, app control, optimise database performance. SD Maid 1 (with Pro after paid) is very useful to automate the apps cleaning process (imagine you clean apps cache one by one, it's tiring with a lot of apps). This app is much more powerful than other similar cleaning apps.

Neutron : if you are music lover and best for audiophiles. I have a lot of hi-res music files (FLAC files, etc.). With the right settings, you could be surprised with the improved sound quality from this app even with MP3 files.

    MacroDroid : automation app
I use this for some tasks/macros such as Auto Wifi on/off while at home or out of home; auto lock when flipping phone down; battery saver on/off at certain time and day; turn on/off location, wifi and launch apps at the same time; auto flashlight gesture; if failed login attempt then take intruder/thief photo, get device location, send sms and email of the intruder/thief photo etc. So many things can be configured, much better than "Shortcuts app" in my iPad. You can choose many templates from other people to use for your android device.

    • Thank you, I've been after an automater for a while. Do you think it's user friendly in setting up basic functions as you've described? And more complex ones?

      • Yes, MacroDroid is more user friendly than some other similar apps like Tasker or IFTTT. I have tried them.

  • TrueCaller for reverse phone number lookup.

  • I constantly use these paid apps:

    • Nova Launcher Prime
    • Moon+ Reader Pro (ebook reader)
    • Solid Explorer Unlock
    • Edge Slider Pro (volume & brightness slider)
  • Nova Launcher Prime
    F stop photo gallery
    Bimostitch Pro

  • I actually always use it for a month of free youtube premium. ads are driving me batty on that platform these days.
