Streaming Athletics Meet over VPN

I'm watching the SEC Track and Field championships at the moment via VPN using YoutubeTV. My VPN is Windscribe. Purchased a lifetime license years ago.

I'm finding it's extremely jerky. Watchable but not that good. Is it likely to be the VPN I'm using? I'm considering getting Nord when they have their next big Cashback offer and trying it for NCAA Nationals in a month.

I'm running this via a VM - that may also be the issue?

I suppose I'm wondering does anyone watch action sport over a VPN and what's your experience, settings, VPN etc.

  • You could just use a trial to suss?

    • I did think of this bu as far as I can see Nord don't do a trial. Only a 30 day money back guarantee.

      • True- I did have experience with refunding Nord (albeit in 2017) and they did indeed refund me fully (had speed inconsistency and poor connection). I got the Nord subscription last Xmas with shopback and it has worked for everything I’ve needed it for so far.

  • So have now changed to running off my laptop (vs VM) and it's much better. Not as jerky.

Having said that a lot of the time it doesn't want to connect and does buffer a lot. So think I should be getting a better performing VPN.

Should I be looking at Nord or is there a lower cost option that is as good?

    • What about trying wifi hotspot off your phone

      • What would that do? I don't think I have Windscribe on my phone at them moment but could install.

        • To see if it’s your isp affecting smoothness?

Windscribe would be running on your laptop

          • @Jimothy Wongingtons: Not ISP. And my phone here has basically no connection. I'm on FTTP 1000/50 at the moment.

  • If you right click the video and click "Stats for Nerds" do you see lots of dropped frames?
If so, its likely your setup.

Have you installed Guest Tools for your VM for video hardware acceleration?

    • There's definitely an issue with the VM as much better on my laptop. Although still glitchy and certainly far from perfect.

So I'll move away from the VM and focus on what else could be at fault.
