I am looking for mobile internet for my laptop(mac air) for a month.
Checked the standard telco options and don't want to pay for the device for just one months use.
I have a 3G sim with 2GB internet that I am not using. Is there any cheap device that uses 3G SIM and tethers Wifi internet?
I have a Telstra SIM card. Which is the place to buy one ?

A cheap android phone will do what you want. Or buy a Vodafone pocket wifi device and get it unlocked, or use the included data if needed for just a month.
Yep, use a cheap Android phone. Keep the handset as your 'on holiday' phone or something, always useful to have something like that.
