Very sad news Deeds Brewing have ceased immediately after being unable to find a buyer or investor to get out of Voluntary Administration.

There is no last hurrah at the taproom in Glen Iris, instead they have the cellar door open to support clearing stock, beer, merch, taproom items etc.

Opening hours and message in their linked Instagram post. A massive loss for craft beer Australia and an excellent local that fought so hard to open their taproom in Glen Iris for so many years.

    A great loss, a great brewery. Just finished one of their Czech dark ales on the weekend, a fine drop, as is all their beer.
    It's a good deal but I just can't upvote, in respect.

      Went to a pub is Port Melbourne recently, the staff say the "hotel" earns money from the pokie machines as alcohol sales are minimal these days due to the high cost, oh and noone stays in this "hotel" but they do have 1 room "available" (closet)

    This is shattering, a wonderful local to Malvern, Glen Iris and Ashburton… Someone will be sure to grab the incredible space, council should hang their heads in shame for the delays opening and all the bloody restrictions 🤬🤬🤬

    such a progressive brewery with so many amazing beers, alot of breweries are facing this sad reality. I think it's the beer excise that's the issue, more than local council etc.

        Basically, it's this:

        As in many other industries, brewers were allowed to defer their alcohol excise payments to stay afloat during COVID-19.

        The ATO allowed a payment holiday for excise. The bulk of the craft breweries still put money aside, but others did not so here's the result.

        As they say, death and taxes….

          I think this is the answer. They spent their owed taxes on growth, probably also took on cheap debt in the pandemic, and got found out when the ATO and the RBA came, and the customers thinned out.

          Disappointing because they are my local and I highly rated their pours (cheaper than Carlton dry down the road!)

          Impressive run to get stocked everywhere and on tap in hospo joints.

            @OG Puppy Banana: Based on the articles I saw they suffered a double whammy of a significant batch of beer that had to be discarded and the denial of the associated insurance claim, along with the ATO rejecting payment plans on owed excise, both within roughly 3 months.

            Reading between the lines they could've handled one of those two events, but both together (along with the ATO's inflexibility) broke them.

            A sad day.

              @Komic: You'd think they would have enough resilience to sort out a bad batch of beer, perhaps take on a bit of debt to see out the period. Although the interest isn't negligible, unless their books were fried and a bank wouldnt touch them, I can't see how a bad batch of any size would kill a brewer with their trajectory and footprint in market.

              Surely their revenue sensitivity wasn't make or break on a few weeks of inventory of some of their products? Or was it legitimately months of inventory literally down the drain?

              You'd think if that's true, that should be reasonable grounds for the ATO to have some leeway…. 🤔

                @OG Puppy Banana: Don't know the details, only what was shared publicly, which was that it was a "significant amount of beer" that had to be discarded. So perhaps my wording of a bad batch understated the issue. I wouldn't think they would bother with claiming insurance for a single bad batch, so it must've been significant inventory that was affected.

                Article says it was due to contaminated malt, so potentially the sort of thing that went unnoticed during initial brewing and was only picked up late.

                From the sounds of it, the ATO haven't been to interested in any grounds, nor leeway. Hawkers were pretty blunt about their situation and attempts to negotiate. Upshot was that ATO got cents in the dollar on the excise debt owed, and Hawkers are no longer under VA, I think. Just seems pointless.

      Basically no limited edition beers, limited selection of things like draught, stout and pale, a very small amount of merch, only clothing left is for women.

            Often i found things sold out online but available in their fridge.

    Just arrived from the taproom. Taps are pouring and there was a dozen or so sitting in and drinking there. Plenty buying takeaway too. Cases of their limiteds available. Got their latest West coast and their latest hazy. Might go back over the weekend and drink some tap beer.

      Yeah I picked up a few of the standard range, the guy said they had heaps of stock but aren't putting it all out due to online orders. So best head in if you wanna grab something!

      Not sure about the growlers, didn't see but might have missed it.

    Went in today, had a final pot and picked up a slab of their last special and a couple pint glasses. Fair bit of stock left, way more than shows online.

    Pleanty of the big stouts left, but still pricy even at 30% off.
