Keep Existing Laptop or Get MacBook M1 or M2?

Currently have a gaming laptop and will be getting a PC soon.

Which means I will have no use for gaming on the gaming laptop which is why I'm considering getting a MacBook for school as the gaming laptop isn't the greatest for battery life/portability.

Would it be better getting a M1 new/used or wait for a good M2 sale.
Would be able to sell the gaming laptop for $650-$750.

If you know you want a Mac you should get it. It's a fine machine and OS. And if you already have an iPhone then it's a no brainer if you already want the Mac.

    • forgot to mention, I have never had an iphone or apple device but seems like a productive system. Which is also why im hesitant on switching OS.

      • Worth trying first.
Bought a M1Air because I hate fan noise. Great clam shell for travel. Still take a small mouse along.
Ups: Looks good, solid case and fast. Acceptable sound.
Downs: Only 1 ext monitor, no magsafe, probably not really repairable so take care.

        • The new M2 Air is a good price new. Haven't looked at it, Apple didn't even bother including it in the keynote.

I have 2 monitors connected using an alogic hub. This worked on my m1 pro, and works on my m2 air.

          • @BewareOfThe Dog: NOT on the M1 and I was not told so!

@payless69: The displaylink software gets around this. Here is an article

              • @BewareOfThe Dog: Thanks. Looks good and wonder if it would help connecting my old Telstra router (250/20) with cable rather than 5GHz.
But I have already one 27" 4k on it and sometimes love 4k tube crap.
In my other room I have an old i5 ($100) laptop that drives 2 32" monitors, one on Hdmi and one on VGA but both look same on HD.
Not in the mood of spending 30% of the mac's cost to go back to HD.

                • @payless69: I run a samsung 32in m7 and lenovo d32u040 off it. Only issue i have is if i have too many usb devices plugged in the alogic stops working. I never had the issue on my m1.

I wish Apple would make a windows machine with a touch screen. The hardware is great but I couldn't give up windows.

      • Why are you so tied to windows? Work? Gaming?

I've used it for that long that going to iOS would be like changing religion or going to bat for the other side.

      • With the M series it's not easy to get windows working.

I would not change to macOS just for portability and battery life.
It's very different to windows and you've mentioned you've never used mac before.
You can get good portable windows laptops with good battery life.

As someone who loves paying too much for Apple devices, I’d say don’t get the Mac and just get a good portable windows based system

I really like my Mac but I do prefer accessing windows programs on a windows system. There’s small but subtle differences which make the latter easier to use

If you are looking for portability and convenience, then a M2 MBA is likely the way to go. I use both Windows and MacOS and they really aren't that different as most of your time is spent in the browser. I prefer MacOS slightly as Windows 11 is a bit meh and clunky.

Before making any decisions make a list of all software you use now and might use (do you need special software for school?) and check their compatibility with MacOS. If all you do is use a browser and MS Office then you'll be fine switching to Mac.

It sounds like you are studying which is the perfect time to branch out and learn something new if you are curious.

  • buy one from apple store and try it out. if you dont like it you can return within 14 days
