Are Digital Photo Frames Really Worth It?

Have been keeping an eye on this item for a mother's day gift, but not sure if it's worth the money? Slightly discounted price at present.

  • You can return it if it isn't up to par when it arrives.

    • True. I am more questioning the initial purchase price?

      • No idea. I'd assume this expensive one has good quality display and intuitive UI and app, but you never know. Could be sub par. Also like in one of the photos reviewing it, a photo doesn't have the right aspect ratio so you get that blurry pillar boxing. So you may want to pre-crop the photos you add to the app for this thing, or find out if there's an option to automatically zoom and crop. Or it'll look a bit rubbish.

  • I bought a little one that shows 6x4 pics on eBay for $35. I really like it, though the kids say I am well into my ok boomer phase.
I get to see hundreds of pics that I would see much less frequently.
The only caveat is, don't just dump a crap ton of photos from a back up on there, spend an hour picking ones that are in focus, not duplicates and oriented correctly.

I got one for my mum too, and it is on when we visit, so I think she likes it too.
I like it more than a slideshow on a tv or screensaver, in part because it is just a small picture frame, not a great big screen.

Not quite the same size but for that price I'd buy a google nest hub - I've paid like $80-100 each for the 3 I have.

You can set it to run slideshow off a google photos album as the default screensaver, which is what we do, with the added bonus of other functionality.

    • agreed google nest hubs are fantastic

From experience (seeing how my folks used theirs years ago) digital photo frames are a novelty. They're nice for a little while and then they got bored of it. First off the light the frames emit is annoying and then they just used it when people went over. After a few months it ended in a junk drawer and they just put up regular photos.

  • I don't understand digital picture frames. When they first came out there were heaps of them at very reasonable prices. Now years later there are very few options and they are all really expensive. What the hell happenned in this space?

Everyone bought one as a christmas gift for everyone else in about 2012 and realised they're completely useless. The market seems to have dried up since then.

if you want it self contained (no connection to network, which is a thing for many) - then sure. but this is too expensive for what it is imo.

otherwise as @Shadowsfury says, get a google hub.
got one in my lounge and kitchen.

    plays music
    has reminders
    reads out weather
    sets timers
    shows photos
    controls lighting

  • I bought one for my elderly Grandma - she loves seeing a different photo of the grand-kids every few minutes. With the scheduler active, it turns off over night too.

Under the hood, many of the cheap ones are just battery-less junky Android tablets running a slideshow… I definitely wouldn't trust them hooked up to an internet connection (many have apps that let you update photos from a cloud drive etc etc), but with a few GB inbuilt storage, they run pretty well in a dumb/disconnected mode.

Edit: just checked your link. Wayyyyyy too pricey. I bought a 10.1" frame for $50 on an Amazon sale

I'm not sure I'd be completely comfortable with this.

    • You have to register the device with ourskylight.com.
    • You have to load and run their app.
    • You need to use their portal, and their email server to send pictures to the device.
    • The white mask area of the frame is massive.
    • All of the pictures are deceitful in that none show the necessary permanently-connected power cable. (Their website does mention this in the FAQ, but it is buried deep.)
    • And it's a whopping $249.00!

I'd rather take the odds to a $50 - $80 no-name off Amazon/AliExpress, and load from my own USB connection.

Uggh… and all that white space….

Bought a Frameo based one for my mum and its been great.

She had a standard one in the past and barely used it.

With the Frameo ones any of the family can send pics to it direct from our phones. Turns itself off and on, new pics load to it automatically.

    Works great.

Your link looks to do much the same just more expensive.

    Even cheaper on amazon.
