    Where are the obligatory jokes?

    • +10

      Here I am.

    • +1

      It didn't sense me…

    • I set the aisle of these off the other day when I was walking through Bunnings….

The year was nineteen dickety six. We had to say dickety as The Kaiser stole the number three….! I wore an onion on my belt, as was the fashion at the time…..

Oh yes, where was I….. Ah stud finders!

      Damned hip replacement!!!

  • +25

I own one of these, can safely say it is hot garbage to use

Lots of false positives, annoying to calibrate

    Avoid, IMO

    • +2

Same. I have it. It's unreliable at best.

      • +2

unreliable at best, unsafe at worst

    • +1

      Any recommendations?

      • +2

the franklin ones are the best on market for the average punter

        • I have a Franklin and it's great

      • +1

After wasting money (and leaving walls with many unnecessary holes) on few different ones from Bunnings I bit the bullet got this one https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B09CVB1L77 it appears pricey until you realize how much time and money is needed to patch the holes in gyprock walls

    • +1

Avoid, it is a guide at best for wood, works OK for steel frames. I will replace mine as soon as I see a good deal on a 'professional' model.

    • ^this

    • Mine works fine after calibration.

      • +1

Good tip……before watching it, I thought he was going to "calibrate" it by hitting it hard with a hammer 🔨

    • The plastic grip also turned sticky on mine. Not very durable. I swear I did nothing inappropriate with it..

  • +2

Detects wood/metal studs up to 19mm

    does it thoughhhh

  • STANLEY !!!

  • +3

These are awful, buy something better.

  • +4

Might as well call it a wall detector

  • FWIW I found a strong magnet also worked well if you already had 1 on hand

  • +4

Don't bother with this its rubbish. I've had a good experience with the Franklin Sensors ProSensor 710.

  • +3

Never had any luck with cheapies. I bought this Franklin model and was mightily impressed. Found all the studs easily. No calibration etc. either. Just put it on the wall and it found the studs.

The cheaper $80 version probably works just as well, but I decided I wanted the wider foot print.

    • +3

Bought one of these just to find the stud was centered direct between 2 missed holes with a cheap one, haven't missed a stud since I got it. Just be aware it needs the full voltage of alkaline batteries, rechargable nihm wont even turn it on, I don't have any lithiums to know if they work, but it might.

  • put on wall no deep, put it in my chest pocket and it won't stop beeping. buyer beware.

    • +1

You may have bought a Dud Finder instead.

      • i checked the box, states stud sensor. ymmv

        • pocket-sized stud sensor

yeah, but only beeps on pocket sized studs :)

          • +1

@SBOB: dont forget its also up to a 19mm depth. now that's really really deep

  • +1

Doesnt work, my wall has a bunch of holes

  • It does work… Measure multiple studs which should be similarly spaced apart

  • Previous discussion on Stanley studfinder (slightly different model with far better rating that this one) https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/835275

Also how can you in good faith post a deal that has 1.7/5 rating (from 135 reviewers) on Bunnings website? 104 out of 135 reviews are one star!

    I have this.

I think the AC detection alert works. OTOH Finding a stud is difficult.

  • +1

Terrible device, don't know how it made it out of the factory, or how it's still on shelves, only serves to drain batteries..

  • +1

It's unbelievable. Literally. Apparently one of my walls has curtains of electrical cables behind it, which suddenly disappear which checked from the other side.

  • +1

missus uses this to cheat at hide'n'seek

  • +1

Useless at doing what it says it should do. It's like those ghost detection apps on mobile phones which claim it is reliable at finding things that don't exist.

    Avoid, and get a Franklin.

  • +1

Worst tool I've ever used, detects power where there is none and doesn't hit studs 80% of the time

  • +2

    Stanley S100 Stud Gypsum Sensor

Absolute piece of crap, it's a disgrace it even bears the Stanley name.
