Domian Names

Hi,

Im not very clued up on all this, but I was thinking of registering another domain name. problem is my host charges like $10 a domain and I noticed crazy domains were selling them for $3.

Do i have to buy my domain names from my host or can I get them else where, If i can is there a transfer fee to move them to my host or can I leave them where they are and some how point them to my site?

thanks

  • No. You do not need to buy domain name from your hosting company. All you need to do is

    1. Buy a domain name from a registrar (preferably reputable one)
    2. Update the DNS setting from that registrar to point to your hosting company

In fact I would usually argue against getting domain names and web hosting from the same place, and the reputation of the place you buying domain names with is A LOT more important than the web hosting. Basically it's easy to move the web host around if your web hosting company disappears from the face of the planet. Not so with domains (except maybe .au ones).

  • Thanks Scotty,

I have been following your comments on other posts and have taken your advice previously, my Hosting is with one of the companys you have hosted with and i'm happy with them.
As I need to register a few names , Do you have any Personal feedback on Crazydomains ? .. or know of a good register?

    Thanks :)

    • Namecheap.com

    • Re: Crazy Domains — do a Google search of "crazy domains" on Whirlpool. Personally I won't use a registrar with "Crazy" in its name and uses Pamela Anderson on their ads :)

Namecheap does not do AU domains, but they are fine with .com/.net/.org domains. I have most my AU domains with VentraIP and they are cheap and no-frills (exactly what I wanted from a registrar). For AU domains it's possible to reclaim the domain from AusRegistry even if the registrar disappears (as long as your registration info is correct and current).

  • Thanks, I ended up going with my host in the end.
