Rear End Crash Experiences. Chassis Damage?

My cursed ute got hit from behind last night. Taking off from lights slowly and whammo. Both cars drivable, minor whiplash to driver and passenger. Both fully insured. It happened as a complete surprise so I'm not sure how far we were pushed etc. No airbags deployed.

Being Friday night, crash assessors won't be working for a few days so thought I'd throw it out here for experiences.

My 4wd ute has a steel protection bar with incorporated towbar (yes, its used off road). There is minor scratching and a slight bend in the bar. Insurance likely to replace the bar like for like. Just nor sure about chassis damage.

Question is, does anyone have experience with a similar incident where chassis was damaged or not?

TLDR rear end crash. Steel protection bar on vehicle. Likely chassis damage?

How long is a piece of string ? No two crashes are the same just let the assessor inspect…

"How long is a piece of string ?" Shorter if it's been rear ended
      .

If the string is dry, it isn't raining.

If the string is wet, it is raining.

If the string is broken, your chassis is too.

    • Yes, will wait for an assessor, just got a couple of days waiting.

What i was hoping for from this thread was a response or two of personal experience eg Got rear ended, they just replaced my towbar. Or Got rear ended, surprised they wrote off my car.

Well yeah, it brings it back to the question, how long is a piece of string.

        • Fair enough.

On a other note can i claim pain and suffering because the pizza was cold when we finally got home? /sarcasm

@Euphemistic: It's too bad that the pizza wasn't thrown to your windscreen and cause further damage, you could have then claimed the pizza as well. /s

It takes a fairly sizeable whack to bend full body chassis rails, especially if they are braced by a tow bar and protection bar.

It all depends on if you were nudged or slammed into. And it doesn’t really matter, as it will be up to the assessor and from my experience dealing with panel guys lately, a lot of cars are getting written off over minor shit because panel shops are screaming out for workers and are 3 to 6 months behind on work because they have no staff. Your area might be different, though.

So, without seeing lots of photos and comparing these to non-crash damaged vehicles, it’s hard to make a call. Could it have a bent chassis? meh, maybe? If it does, they will write it off. If not, they may just replace the damaged bar and tow hitch.

    • Same area as you peg.

      • I was down you way today, I should have popped in to give you a quote :D

If they write it off, good time to go EV shopping over at Cardiff BYD… ;)

    Roses are red

    Violets are blue

    Your chassis might be bent

But it also might not be too.

  • Euphemistic rear end collisions….
were there actually any vehicles involved 🤔

  • Find the chassis dimensions online and then start measuring. Or wait for it to get professionally assessed.

  • What year of manufacture is your ute?
What is your sum insured, Market value, or agreed value?
Does your policy cover non standard accessories, ie did you nominate the tow bar and other accessories such as a bull bar when you insured the car?
If not then you will likely need to claim against the other persons insurance.

  • The real question here for what will be covered for and do you have any non standard bits that you haven’t told your insurer about. Even if they were done by ARB or similar you might have to add it on.

Hopefully the metal bar took the brunt of the impact and it will be a simple protection bar and tow bar replacement. If you have choice of repairer insist on that.

  • Finally got around to getting it to a repairer. His opinion was that there is no serious damage. The repair would most likely be a bar replacement and that they are so busy theyd get me to take it direct to the bar supplier myself.

Now to play the insurance claim game.
