All-time-low according to Camel^3
I have been tracking these Nanoleaf bulbs with Matter to add to my HomeKit environment.
There aren't many 9W smart bulbs putting out >800lm. It was either LIFX or Nanoleaf.
Love the LIFX lightbeams, but I am leaning towards Thread devices to not overcrowd my home WiFi

Key specs:
E27 9W 1100lm

Bluetooth capable, but the delay is so bad just don't bother.
Nanoleaf really just built them to run on Thread

These bad boys caught a bad rep. in the early days because of some misleading marketing at the time when the Matter over Thread situation was still hot off the press.

Note* if you are building a smart home ecosystem on Thread:
These bulbs can only be a thread router,
they are not thread border routers (e.g. the Apple TV 4k w/ Ethernet bargain here: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/844039)

  • It's been a couple of years since I've tried Nanoleaf, I'm interested if they upped their connectivity game since then, they're OK bulbs but I just couldn't get anything Nanoleaf to stay connected to anything consistently, this was using a Nanoleaf Shapes as a border router too.

Recent-ish reviews dont seem to be any different.

The colours also aren't quite as good as LIFX imo, but are better than Hue.

    • These matter bulbs are trash and word of warning, i tried to return them as i just couldnt get them to connect to either google nest hub or apple tv thread border routers. They spent 6 weeks with me troubleshooting to try and then refused the return because it was "outside 30 day window from purchase"

Nanoleaf never again. Tuya Zigbee bulbs off temu/ali are better.

Edit to add, I also have eve matter smart plugs that have been flawless over thread/matter so it isn't a matter issue.

    • Yes, I read similar experience on the HomeKit sub-reddit, and I am just as anxious while I am watching delivery tracking

Apparently Nanoleaf programmed their own smart accessories to run on their own private Thread network, separate to the existing smart home ecosystem at their users' environment. This made a mess where our smart home controllers aren't picking up signals or status like it should be

I read in the sub-reddit that Nanoleaf changed this behaviour in one of their firmware updates in the past 8-10months. I am crossing my fingers that these Matter-eneabled bulbs are now finally on a more stable footing to integrate in to my HomeKit environment

For reference, Nanoleaf's help article site: https://helpdesk.nanoleaf.me/en-US/articles/nanoleaf-essentials-(matter)-63055

  • Nanoleaf get okish bulbs from China. But I wouldn't pay 75 bucks for 3 bulbs.

  • I've spent some money on Nanoleaf over the years. It's all broken and the app is a mess. Good luck people!

  • Update: Received the bulbs this morning. Fully deployed into HomeKit environment, over Thread protocol. The bulbs themselves will identify themselves as 'mesh extender'

Key learnings to avoid all the pairing and disconnect issues is: Enrol the bulbs in Apple Home first. Then complete the set up in Nanoleaf app.

On the other hand, if you initiate the bulbs in Nanoleaf app first, you will still be using Matter, however, you will receive an error when enrolling into Apple Home via Nanoleaf's app
