Google Nest Protect Wired - $139

"Hey Google. Is my house on fire?"

    • +5

"I'm sorry, I cannot answer that without an active Google Nest Protect Plan. You can find a list of our available Nest Protect plans on the Google Nest Protect Website where you can activate and manage your Google Nest Protect subscription.

      • That is funny.

    • starting fire in 3,2,1… replied nest

    • +1

"OK, playing "I'm on fire" by Bruce Springsteen"

  • Can link into home assistant via homekit integration easily

  • +6

I’ve got 2 of these and wouldn’t buy them again. Google still haven’t rolled them into the google home app and it feels like they’re on life support.

    • This

      • +1

I have two as well and agree. Google really let the ball drop with these.

        NB They still though.

    • Any recommendations for an alternative?

I was about to jump on this because of homekit / home assistant integration, but knowing Google, no updates means the product is likely going to be discontinued (rather than replaced)

    • Yes - absolute abandonware

    • +2

They canned Works with Nest too. Mine are integrated with LIFX to make the bulbs flash red when smoke is detected.
Still works, but can't find a way to get to the settings any more to disable it (or enable for new ones I guess)

Also, they want me to migrate my Nest account to my Google account. Until I get to the point where it sees I am using a GSuite account which is a no no apparently.
Thats whole other issue (GSuite used to work a lot better with Google Home, but they remove more and more as time goes on.)
Unfortunately the Home Assistant integration doesn't work unless they are migrated to a Google account either.

That said, they still do everything else they are supposed to. The gentle pre-warning is great when someone burns toast and can air it out before being blasted with an alarm.

No reason for them to move them to Google Home.. The 'Nest Protect' app is fine and works well.

    • I get that the app is separate but how does this impact their effectiveness as a smoke alarm? Does the Nest app not provide alerts or notifications?

  • +7

Have these throughout the house. They are brilliant devices. Do exactly what they are supposed to do, seemless integration with each other, the night lights are awesome, CO detection, self testing… Love them!

    • +4

Same. Never thought I’d care about smoke detectors, but these really are great.

      • +5

Same here. The night light function is a nice bonus.

Do exactly what they are supposed to do, seemless integration with each other,

Do those features still work if your internet is down.

      • +1

Yes the interconnect doesn't use internet (or WiFi)

    • +1

Love mine too, night lights have saved so many stepping on Lego related in accidents.

  • These are only "good" for ten years from date of manufacture right? Anyone received any already? How old are they?

    • I've got another 3 years on mine, waiting to see what will happen once the 10 years is up.
Can't remember if they had a date stamped on them or if its just based on the activation date.

(Just checked the app and there is a "replace by" date which is one month earlier than I received them so I guess it's not activation date)

FWIW JB matched Officeworks for me via chat, so I can use my $10 Perks birthday voucher.

    • Lucky, I tried to pricematch and they refused, as all my local Officeworks did not have any stock.

      • You have to mention a post code that stock is available in. Easy!

      • That is funny. In some branches, they say Limited Stock, but when we want to complete the purchase, they say out of stock. Unfortunately need to skip this :(

It's such a pity they have to be wired. Recommendations for good battery-powered alternatives would be appreciated.

    • +1

They have battery powered versions but depending on your state laws you may be required to have hard wired ones.

      • Thanks for mentioning that. All the major retailers I had checked online only had a wired version, so I had assumed there was no battery version available!

      • I have battery ones, they last for ages.

    • Pretty sure they're wired because that's the regulations.

      • Depends on the state, I believe.

  • +1

Anyone knows how much sparkies charge to install these?

  • Depends on their car/boat/house repayment amount I believe.

  • +1

Received mine, ordered this morning. Dated December 2023 so expire December 2033.

Battery smoke detectors are not usable in Australia any more for new installations. Of course exisiting battery systems are grandfathered in.

  • I have had my two battery operated Google detectors for two years now and they are brilliant.
