70

Sharing as I think this could be of use for someone who may be looking for a massage chair.

After a long search and trying many massage chairs, we settled on the iRest SL-A100. The company currently lists the price as $7,300 after 47% discount on RRP.

https://www.irestonline.com.au/product/irest-a100-electric-m…

We tried to negotiate using the Costco price and they said they couldnt match the price and to buy it from Costco.

Costco has been selling the same chair for $5,499.98. If you are an executive member, you will also earn 2% of the ex GST price back ($100). Essentially the chair will cost $5399.98 which is $1900 less the iRest's online price. Duplicate Executive Membership offer removed from title — Mod.

Careful what you wish for :P

Pfft. Seen these at the same price or less here many times. No deal

    • I searched and did not find any listings for this particular model. Keen to see which deal you are referring to and how old it was?

      • +1

Don't get so specific. Most of these chairs have same or similar features with a different model name. And the RRP is complete bulldust.

There was a chair here posted at $2500. Same chair newer deal posted $3000+. It's all a rort, designed to confuse buyers. Look at a few chairs then hit marketplace and get served some ads, browse kogan, whatever… An equivalent chair will be on offer at this price every day of the week, or cheaper

At least you've tried them. I just find it impossible to believe there isn't similar for cheaper.

        • +10

You might be correct in saying that there may be a similar cheaper chair, however it is extremely hard to find as most cheaper brands do not have trial places. But I have done my reasearch and trials and here are some pointers -

          1. The $3k chair you are talking about, I assume, is the Masseuse Massage Vitality pro flex. That was the first chair we bought and returned to Costco after 3 months of use. I can tell you that Vitality pro flex is no where near as good as SL-A100.
          2. A friend gone down the path of buying and trying a cheap chair. He did a tech specs comparison and bought a Homasa 4D chair for about $1400. If you look at the tech specs, the chair seems much superior to any other chair. I have tried it a twice and it is one of the worst chairs. I didnt want to sit in it for a third attempt of trial. Funny thing is, they havent used the chair more than a few times themselves and it serves as a furniture peace. The vitality pro flex which we didnt like so much was a far better feel to this crappy Homasa chair.
          3. Another friend has a chair from brand called Feel Good Massage. Bought for $4k about 6 years ago. It is an old tech and 2D but 100 times better than the above Homasa chair. Everytime I am at his place, I love getting a massage. They themselves have used it extensively. This is the difference between people with cheap chair who complain about how bad they are vs a chair from a good brand that is used keenly.
          4. We tried several chairs from different brands and have spoken with many people in the industry. Apparently 90% of the chairs that come to Australia are assembled in 2 Warehouses in China but every chair is different as they make them as per the retailer's specs. Some retailers use top end materials and tech for their chairs while some use the crappiest of the materials but on a tech specs sheet make them sound better and do a good job at fooling people.

The only comparison I could find to the SL-A100 was the Messeuse Massage Remedial Delux plus chair however it is inferios to the SL-A100 in the foot/leg massage. Messeuse retails it for $12,995 and in store I was told they could do it for $7,995. Based on the trial and what I have found, they both are exact same chair on the upper part but different leg/foot massager. The better chair is selling for $2.5k less at Costco and the deciding factor.

Hope this can help someone and stop them from wasting their money on a cheap chair.

  • Where did you try and negotiate? In-store? I know they can do $6750 in-store and they're showing $8,299 online. Likely they've got an agreement with Costco, especially since they're advertising that relationship in your link

    • The link still shows $7,300 for me, for the red one. They dont have a store in SA but have someone locally who keeps a demo chair at home. We tried at thier agent's home and have been dealing with a representative online via thier FB handle. She did say they could look at better price but it will not be the Costco price. I didnt bother further as we liked the chair and have Costco membership. Even if they had matched the price, I would prefer Costco for the peace of mind.

      • Oops, sorry I meant the A100S is $6750 in-store (Sydney) and it's $8,299 online. Left that important part out! Might be different being in SA though

        • Just looked at A100S, that has health detection and magneto therapy.. other than that, it looks to have same feature? And yeah in SA, they dont have a store and their agent only had one chair.

          • +1

@Megatron: Yeah I'm not sure what the difference is between the two models but we walked by a store and tested out the A100S so knew they could do that price - which was pretty different to their online price!

          • @Megatron:

            magneto therapy

I tried one at the store many Years ago and bought it on the spot (kind of impulse buy at the time, but now glad i did), have now owned my irest chair for past 7 Years, obviously a different model but its still going strong after all these Years and even the leather has held up all this time with very little sign of any wear and tear. I paid $4k for mine.

The back and feet massage is excellent and zero gravity feature is nice however I wish the shoulder/neck massage was better and also my model only allows maximum 20 mins massage intervals. Im sure these newer models now have more features though.

Many shopping centres have these chairs on display and you can try them first before you buy, obviously spending this kind of money you should definitely try it first.

    • How has it held up? I am concerned about only 3 year warranty and only 1 year of that is labour.

      • +1

As I mentioned in my post above, still working great after 7+ Years, no electrical/motor issues that I am aware of. Also the leather is mostly mint condition too, not sure if its faux leather or real, but either way its held up really well.

that's comforting to know from a real world user. Thanks

  • I tried this chair at Costco on the weekend and it was really good. We almost bought it but when I called iRest they said it is an older model they are running out and they have newer ones with 2 motors.
Going to try them out next time I am in Sydney.

    • Did they say if the price will be different? And when are they expected to release the new model?

    • I just checked with iRest rep on Facebook chat and she says that is not correct.. she says the A688 and A688 plus have dual core motor.. there is no plan to change A100 to dual core motor. May be call and check with someone else again?

      https://www.irestonline.com.au/product/new-sl-a688s-plus-cho…

She also said the dual core rollers are harder so may not be same feel as the A100. And A688 model's leg and foot massager is fairly inferior to A100.

      • sorry for the mis-understanding, I meant that they had other massage chairs with dual motors. The A100 is being run out. From memory it was about $1000 to $1500 more than the A100 and they said if you go in store they can beat the online price.
It's worth it to me to try the newer models for $1000ish for something that will hopefully last 10 years.

        • The rep said A100 is their best seller so no chance of it being discontinued. Also dual motor just means, there are two rollers working at the same time.. but definitely try it before you buy as she said the rollers on dual motor are firm and not same feel as A100.

          • @Megatron: Could the new model be the A100S? The website calls it (New)SL-A100S
            https://www.irestonline.com.au/product/sl-a100s-pink/

            • @aragornelessar: The A100S was discussed above in the chat.. it has a few add on features but it is not a dual motor chair which is what @cykezero was suggesting.

From what I can see, the additional features on A100S are not worth the extra money ($6,750 in store as pointed by someone else above). Those extra features, health scan and magneto therapy are more like gimmicery.

Edit - just noticed you were the one who pointed out the instire price for A100S.. sorry couldnt remember the user name.

          • +1

@Megatron: The rep must have meant the one that Costco has is being run out as she said some of their stores no longer have them on display. Don't get me wrong, it is a very good chair, but I would like to try the new ones as well to see if they work for me and my partner.
It might be good working on 2 parts at once. Could be done in half the time!

  • I will wait to see it becomes a Costco “hot buy” product with further discounts. The additional benefits buying from Costco may be for warranty claim after 3 years.

    • Yeah that was the reason I had held back buying it earlier too. Last month they had the Ogawa chair on special ($1k off), this month they had the Massuese Vitality pro flex on special ($760 off). I wanted to see if they will have a mother's day sale on the iRest one but nothing so far. So I rang Costco member care and they said they already have mother's day catalogue out and none of the chairs are on special. I asked if they foresee any future sale on these and she said sale on Massage chairs was not common. I pointed out the 2 sales in 2 months, I was then told the vitality pro flex goes on sale 2-3 times a year and that is it. The Ogawa one may have been a manufacturer promo as when it was on promo, the other places had a promotional price on Ogawa chairs too. So I have just pulled the pin, and if the price drops by a $1000 within 3 months, in the spirit of being an Ozbargainer, I will have a fight to get it back lol.

There is no way to compare other than trying it and see if you like it, which with an online store can be tricky. On these things, you can not simply compare the scecs and work it out. Read my comment above about low priced chairs vs quality chairs that cost more.

    • +2

The Kogan chair has fixed 'nodes' that do the massage (the cheapest/most basic type of massage chair) while the iRest has the massage heads moving up and down and side to side in a more realistic kneading pattern on a track.

  • Anyone bought this from Costco can confirm if they include assembly service besides delivery?
