    • +33

bought only 5.. cost of living is harder on the wallet these days

      • +2

I bought 0. Take that inflation and cost of living!

  • +1

@Kazusa think you got the name of the shop wrong. Or I'm missing something completely.

    • My bad, both stores had it for the same price

  • +9

    This or an iPhone 15?

    • +49

I think you got the order wrong it’s “This or 15 iPhones”

      • You can take selfies with an iPhone. Isn't that what everyone wants?

      • +4

I think you missed the joke

  • +11

Can i make this into a thermos?

  • Not the 100-300 but you can have the 70-200 https://petapixel.com/2010/06/12/unboxing-the-canon-lens-the…

  • +2

If you are buying this to take selfies, consider this:

The lens is 2.6kg, and you need a R3 to be worthy of it, so that's another 1kg.

You will need to hit the gym for a year before you can hold that weight steady at arms length to take a picture of your nose. :D

    • +7

With an MFD of 1.8m, arm should be at least 2m long. :D

      • I guess one can use a monopod as a selfie stick, better get started on that front lateral raise. :D

    • +2

You must have long arms too:

      Minimum Focus Distance 1.8 m

Edit: beat me by 17 seconds!

    • +1

Nah I bought this so I can safely say mine bigger than yours now.

    • +2

You could use this to take selfies using the bathroom mirror in the appartment across the street

  • What a bargain!

  • +8

I was recently shocked at how well the L series lens maintain their prices. Just sold my 2 old L series lens (no not in the ballpark of this ones cost) and got almost the same price I paid for them 12 years ago. Was a very pleasant Suprise when clearing out all the old camera gear.

    • -5

      Should have invested in property.

    • +5

top end glass always holds its value. Camera bodies.. not so much :)

      • +3

yep, know that now. glad I kept the lens well protected and in perfect condition. Originally bought for a once in a lifetime trip to the artic to see northern lights, expected to only get a few hundred back on the thousands invested, was worth the investment and time taken to learn to do night photography for it and just a huge bonus to find so far down the track I can recover a lot of the cost.

I sold my Canon 85mm 1.2L on facebook market and got offer same price when I bought it 10-12 yrs ago.

      Kept it in pristine condition.

    • +1

Judging by inflation, you lost a bit more than half of the value.

      • +4

closer to a 3rd. which is actually pretty bloody fantastic for a 12 year old product that has had extensive use.

    • Depends on the lens, the Canon 50mm 1.2 L rrp $2,679.0 and is selling for sub 1k.

      • +2

you are looking at RRP prices, I would hope someone on OzB would never consider 2679 the real price people pay. you can get that lens new for sub $1800. hell even amazon has it for $1750. but yes it tends to be the lens in higher demand that hold their value better.

  • +2

    Any significantly cheaper alternatives?

    • +5

This is a significantly cheaper alternative

      • “Cow pink” is even cheaper

        • +2

Remember to check the box for 10% off

      • thanks saved me from highway robbery, this is slightly cheaper but a delas a deal XD

    • If you want native RF mount, probably the 100-400 f/5.6-8, but it is really slow at the long end, not suitable for any sort of action photography.

      https://www.canon.com.au/camera-lenses/rf-100-400mm-f5-6-8-i…

The EF mount 100-400 f/4.5-5.6 is a much better lens but requires an adapter if you are using Canon mirrorless.

      https://www.canon.com.au/camera-lenses/ef-100-400mm-f-4-5-5-…

      • +4

I've been using the 100-400 RF for a few weeks now for my kids sport photos and its fine in good light at 400mm F8 1/1000 with auto ISO but as soon as its a bit darker the ISO creeps too high like 6400 and its a write off. But for ~$850 its pretty exceptional value.

        • New cameras should be fine with ISO 6400. Even my old 1Dx (12y old) give very good results on ISO 12800 and above.

          • @localhost: Yeah it's "fine" on the R3 but not as crispy looking as I like, especially as I'm usually cropping a fair bit to get nicer close ups of the action.

        • Agree 100% this lens is fantastic bang for buck. 👍

    • Heaps, if you don't need F2.8. I got my e-mount Tamron 70300 for less than $1k. This is in a different league though.

Canon is opening up their ecosystem to third party lens makers.

  • +12

Thanks bought two, one for each eye

  • +10

Hard to believe that after selling you a lens for $14,704 they still charge you $11.90 for postage

    • +3

Harder to believe the postie will throw the box around with an almost $15k lens in it.

    • +1

Surprised it's not more, would that courier cost even cover the replacement of a $15k item if it gets 'lost' during transit? Doesn't Auspost only cover up to $5k or something?

      • Businesses usually negotiate logistic contracts annually. The pricing structure is very different than consumer postal services and they are typically covered by an umbrella policy. You have to read the fine prints.

Some couriers such as StarTrack has a different division that handles high value products and they take good care of them in the process. But often expensive goods are delivered through regular channels and things can get rough.

      • -1

Think they only cover like $100, IF they decide to cover at all.

        • Enough to buy the mug version in consolation then.

  • Wow, still no "thanks, bought 10" comment!

  • That a big boy
Well I did studied in Photography
    But broke💀

I clicked the link to double check its not a typo. Damn. Thats expensive.

This is worth more than the value of both my wife and my cars combined..

    and I still want one.

    • +2

is your wife inflatable or something?

    • Damm - they are some cheap cars… wow.

  • no, delivery fee is a no deal

  • Margin must be really tight, can’t even absorb $12 delivery fee 🤣

  • +1

So glad I got out of the "semi pro" photography hobby.
Mobile + 360 cam is all I need.

  • +1

waiting for it to come down to $100

  • As an amateur I will never justify spending so much on a lens, but I really enjoy using prime 200mm f/2.8 L, which is a total bargain.

  • -1

thanks! my cat needed this for his new photography business

  • -2

Thanks OP. Got 4. Now everyone in my family got their own. No grumping or sharing. Cheers.

  • The IS L lens are sweet - 70-200mm f/2.8 L IS USM was one of my fav pieces of glass. Even with a extender this would allow some awesome images.

Great price, but worst camera retailer around.

Lots of photographers I know have had terrible experiences with CameraPro. They are on the ‘avoid at all costs’ list for many people. One of the photographers I have known for many years purchased a lens from them, and they sent him the old version of the lens (worth 1/4 the price). They then tried to gaslight for a few weeks, telling him that they sent him the right product, even though they were very obviously wrong. It was all over a bunch of the Sydney and Melbourne photography Facebook groups.

I ordered a product that they said was in stock, only for them to hold onto my money for a month and then say they couldn’t get the product. They are terrible.

    Bottom line, avoid them.

    • Thanks, I’ll take my 14k elsewhere then

  • +3

We almost need a high rollers section for items like this. For members who can impulse buy bargains that start at 10k……

Group could be called, "Thanks Op, i bought 10….."

  • That's an expensive thermos.

    • Keeps your coffee hot for 24 years.

  • These used to be around 15k about 10 years ago. They hold their value well on second hand markets if kept well.

    • RF or EF?

  • I only have EF mount lol :P Haven't used that in a while though

  • Hot baby , I have a plan to get this from buying lens cleaner…..

  • If I can't take a selfie it's not a deal 😛

  • click in this just for the comments

  • arghhh wish I could justify this, but don't do enough sports work :( Next RF on the shopping list is the 85 1.2!

  • $14,704.06. They could have also added few cents more to the the four dollar.

  • +1

I used to have a high-end Canon DSRL camera and a few good lenses. I sold all of them for a good price a few years back. Good decision.

  • +1

I like to keep one of these on my every day carry for some inconspicuous street photography.

  • -1

had 100m L macro in the old days - great lens

  • Like for sarcasm and ridiculous pricing

  • Shipping kind of kills the deal.

  • That delivery cost just kills it.

  • I wish I could afford this lens, it's magic

  • How many avocado toasts does this equate to?

  • F/2.8 are not worth it for such an amount, F/4 gets you pretty good shots, given the latest DSLR and ISO lightning advancements.
