Recommendations for Check-in and Cabin Luggage

Hi all. What checking and cabin luggage does the OzB community recommend? We have two young kids and are looking at Samsonite but also have noticed brands like July, Monos etc popping up. They look cool but not sure of reliability. Also don’t want to buy Rimowa - $$$.

Recommendations welcome! Thanks everyone!

      Agree. Avoid paper. If it's raining it will just crumble in the baggage handlers hand.

    Check what they are made from. If they are made from ABS they do not last. Polycarbonate lasts longer, but can be heavy. I will only buy Samsonite, Antler and American Tourister. If you can visit Strandbags outlet shops they often have good prices. Costco sometimes has Samsonite.

    I have 2 Lojel. Pick them up at good prices in Japan or Chinatown in Singapore. One is the older polycarbonate which is heavy but the newer models are much lighter.

    Aside from that Id stick with Samsonite, American Tourister, Antler, Delsey. Depends whether you want zip, non zip et.

    Avoid the trend for USB battery pack. Friggin nightmare at security.

    If they're little people, get a Trunki. If somwehat older, 50L North Face Base Camp Duffel S or 55L Patagonia Black Hole or 50L Helly Hansen Duffel Bag 2 among others. 55L Fjällräven Splitpack is perhaps too pricey. The TNF bags will last them well into adulthood, dead weight 1.2kg so well suited to low-cost carriers (7kg), can be carried onboard or checked. My offspring have travelled the world with these bags and still use them for domestic and international trips… as do their companions who buy them when they learn how versatile they are. Also suitable for school camps, sleepovers, etc

    If you are willing to spend, and spend a bit - I highly recommend Rimowa suitcases, incredibly durable, stable and comes with a proper full lifetime warranty

      Overpriced status symbol for emotionally fragile egos. And the cabin size rimowa weighs 4.3kg. Hard pass.

    Have seen nice shiny hard case on conveyor belt be absolutely crushed!
    Soft sided cases fit into awkward spaces more easily too!

    My go to brands are Antler, Samsonite and TravelPro (used by airlines).

    I have a combination of luggage from the 3 brands mentioned above and they've all lasted copious amounts of bangs, dings, scrapes and abuse I've hurled at them. None of my bags are from their premium range and are mid range at best.

    If any of them break, I wouldn't hesitate to buy another.

    I've heard American Tourister (owned by Samsonite) is also a good brand with affordable pricing, but I've never used any of their bags.

      My goto are $29 suitcases from Kmart…

      Just throw them in the hard rubbish after a few trips and buy a new one…

    Any serious traveller will tell you to choose a soft skin over a hard skin suitcase. As such you're only options are nylon or ballistic nylon.

    In most cases Nylon is your best option when you're factoring for weight, durability and cost. The most readily available (in Australia), high quality and well priced suitcase series is the Samsonite 73H. It's regularly 40% off.

    Lastly, there's a very limited market for the ballistic nylon as it's really only for high frequency travellers who check-in their luggage i.e. aircrew. Experienced business travellers only do carry on to save time.

    Whatever they have at Costco. The lifetime "change of mind" policy applies to luggage.

    I got antler zeolite matching set a few years back. Done two trips across USA in planes, trains and automobiles and still pristine.

    Bag world in WA is great retailer.
