  • when do sales for September 2025 usually come out?

  • +1

ANA in feb sydney to tokyo 1.2k return, not bad

    • ANA had some good deals. I've booked a trip in May-June flying Sydney to Tokyo > Tokyo to Osaka > Osaka to Tokyo > Tokyo to Sydney for like $1000. Adding domestic flights seemed to bring the total price down for some reason lol

      • actually i was telling a friend about ANA flights as he wanted to book for next month, literally on the night i told him ANA was having 1k flights and exactly like your flight path (so you don't have to bullet train out from osaka to tokyo, just catch the plane within your plane booking)
anyhow the next day the flights went up to 1.3k - crazy how quick the price can change just like that

oh wait is your trip multi trip?

        • The domestic flights are in the middle of my trip. I booked as a multi city trip all at once direct with ANA.

          • @ozbargainer88: then yeah thats really good that you did it as a multi trip all with ANA for 1k!
surprised you didn't want to try at least the bullet train from tokyo to osaka at least?

wonder what the times would be between airport and bullet train
            e.g.
bullet train - go to train station, 3 hour bullet train to osaka, then local train to accom
airplane - go to airport, wait for boarding etc, 1 hour flight to osaka, pickup luggage, then local train to accom

      • whatt!!! Do you have a link or method to how you did it? Want to do the same route but sometime in Dec or January maybe

        • go on ana website and search with multi city option lol

i doubt youd get 1k return in dec/jan coz its peak season

          • +1

@prankster: Yep I didn't do anything special just chose multi city on ANA website.

  • November doesn't really seem that cheap, looks more like existing prices from before (was looking at Melb Tokyo return for 3 weeks, even picking Tues/Wed depart and Fri return for the cheapest days - $1361).

    • November is rainy season. Made some tourist destinations a bit rough last time we went.

      • +4

Might have been a bit wet for you but November is not rainy season in Tokyo, usually that’s around June/July.

      • November is not a rainy season. Depending on the areas November is one of the best time to catch autumn foliage, so it's not going to be a cheap period

  • Thanks. Pulling the trigger now as I missed the ANA sale but 10% of me still wanting to stop at PH for quick Jolibee.

    • hahahah if only you could do a multi stop via PH to tokyo and it cost the same price. i dont think your allowed to leave the airport unless your ticket is multi stop?

      • $200 cheaper but +8 hours travel. I don't mind waiting for 4+ hours at the airport with few burgers from Jolibee lol

        • depends which airport terminal too, and plus you have to go outside of customs which would you be allowed?

  • Brisbane has gone up, not $1062 anymore

I want to visit Japan in July, so far have done zero planning, not sure where to start.

Would a 10-day trip (realistically 8 full days) sufficient for 3 cities? Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto?

There are other cities I want to visit but will have be another trip.

    • +2

I would focus on 2 cities instead. I had 6 days in each and still felt like it was too short. theres lots to explore in each city depending on what kind of tourist you are tbh.

    • +8

July is hot as hell in Japan

      • +1

It's fine though just be prepared to sweat and have multiple showers a day.

    • Don't do 3 cities in 10 days. Keep in mind that travel between cities, accomodation check ins etc chew up quite a bit of time too.

    • +2

If you like Ghibli films (Spirited Away, Totoro, etc) just be aware that you need to book tickets to the new theme park, Ghibli Park, TWO MONTHS in advance at the moment.

I just booked for my June trip and almost missed out (signed on 8 minutes after tickets for June went on sale, still barely got some).

We are doing Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya over 10 days. Shinkansen between cities is only a few hours, so probably 5 days tokyo, 3 in Osaka and 2 in Nagoya (Ghibli park etc). That's a very tight schedule though, do two cities (or even just Tokyo) if you might be coming back again a few years from now.

      • +1

Thank you! Will add this to my tips

    • +4

July is probably the worst time to visit non-nothern parts of Japan.

      • +4

Agreed. Hot, humid and likely pouring with rain

    • 4th trip to Japan and this time it's 16 days in Tokyo!
3rd trip to Japan was 2 weeks in Tokyo
      2nd was Tokyo+Osaka
      1st was Tokyo Osaka Kyoto

      • Wow! You really like Tokyo. So many parts of Japan I want to visit.

        • +2

Japan is huge, the city's are vertical/dense as, so many nooks and crannies.

JR pass is like $500 so it's quite expensive for 8 days of travel ($62.50/day). So make sure you line up stuff because you can get a one time use Shinkansen ticket too ~$50

Tokyo Metro tickets are like $3.60 return as a reference, or $6/$9 for a daily depending which train line you take.

Just figure out what differentiates/isn't available in each area and cross check it with your want to list.

          Stuff to checkout:
Onsens, Ryokans, bullet trains, theme parks, teamlabs (planets+borderless), san rio, Disneyland, Disney sea, universal, Harry potter, studio ghibli, buildings e.g. skytree, mt fuji, Pokemon centres, Kirin beer garden, maid /cat/dog/<insert animal/object> cafes.

The food is endless and can be as cheap or expensive as you want!

A bowl of Udon with tempura can be $7-$30.
Maccas is like $6.50 for a medium meal.

          There's everything and probably anything!

Tokyo is crazy af. Just checkout their train network map and you will realise why it's a huge time sink!

          • @Kammi: Where are you going that Shinkansen is $50? Tokyo to Osaka is like 15k yen.

            • +1

@ozbargainer88: Yeah Tokyo to Osaka its expensive, i meant to just experience the bullet train you can do short trips from Tokyo to e.g. Hakone but 100% not all via the bullet train but relatively cheap.

          • @Kammi:

            maid /cat/dog/<insert animal/object> cafes

This is what I heard. Some could be just rumours…
            - robot/AI cafe
            - replica gun cafe
            - tank cafe
            - factory cafe
            - insect cafe

        • +1

Tokyo has half the population of Australia so there's lots to see and do!

      • +1

Why so much Tokyo? Every trip I'm spending less and less time there because it just drives me a bit crazy after a few days.

      • +1

Similar to my trips, although I’ve lost count of visits. Last trip we did 13 days in Tokyo only. Got lots of questions from people when I said just Tokyo, like why just Tokyo? There’s just so much to do in Tokyo. But you do have to love cities.

    • Thanks, it doesn't have to be July, will think about another time, perhaps defer to August.

    • +1

Will never understand why people go to Tokyo AND Osaka on a short trip, unless they're using Osaka as a base to visit smaller towns in the area. Lived in Osaka for a year, and it was cool, but don't understand the appeal to tourists, it's just another big city with less to do than Tokyo.

      • couldn't agree more

    • can do Kyoto as day trips from Osaka. express trains only take about 40-50 mins and hotels were cheaper in Osaka.

  • +13

AUD to Yen is absolutely insane right now. Last time I went in 2020, it was 73, now it's 102~

    • +3

Also, great for alocholics, very cheap booze.

    • +1

Yeah. But most of the hotels cost higher now. JR pass also increases in price. Maybe only can save on cheaper food cost.

      • Don't buy from hotel. Walk off into a residential area, and you'll come by a beer vending machine in no time.

Ever seen 1Litre can of beer?

  • I thought return for free sale starts today? Wouldn’t that be cheaper ?

    • That’s tomorrow isn’t it, 1 May? If your talking Jetstar

    • +2

Not by the time you add on bags and meals, I would pay the $100 difference for JAL

      • My Jetstar return for free trip last year ended up being around $600 after bags and food, so still $400 under these JAL flights.

  • +1

@IWantThatFlight do you know until when in Feb25?

  • Bloody hell booked those dates for June on their website at 1.3K per ticket… for 5 people!!

    • Worth a try calling them but don't expect.

  • JAL $2998 for Oct-Oct, MEL-NRT return. Qantas was $1500.

  • Looks like the only site offering these are BudgetAir via IWTF and the reviews aren't the greatest. Everything else including direct are normal prices. Anyone with experiences via BudgetAir?

    • I think like most online travel agents, fine if no changes, ultra hit or miss if something needs changing, especially if urgent.

    • +2

Price match at Flight Centre an option also

  • june to october is too hot and humid
i recommended to travel between december ~march

    • +1

      Disagree.

I think September and October has perfect weather for a travelling Australian.

December, January and February are brutally cold. Would avoid.

      • +1

Yeah I am thinking September next year for my little fam

      • Had mixed revews about September from a Japanese guy at work (from Kobe) and another guy who's partner is Japanese. One said it's a good time of year, the other said still too hot and humid. I shall find out who was right when I get there lol.

      • Depends where you’re going and maybe where you’re from in Australia, as well as what weather you enjoy. November to February weather suits me fine when travelling to Tokyo and further South - I’m from Melbourne. I’m guessing the snow bunnies would enjoy some of these times too for North. September and October are the end off their monsoon season, so expect heavy rains.

  • +1

How can I see the Feb Syd - Tokyo prices (that are cheap)?

  • +3

Looking at the JAL site as one should, there's some strangeness that people could take advantage of:

Melbourne to Narita, 30 October to 19 November $1379
but Melbourne to Fukuoka, same dates only $1089

It seems like adding a domestic leg within Japan gets you access to super discounted fare class Q or O. (Although, free domestic flight add-ons have long been available from JAL.)

Unusually, they are not showing up yet on the power user tool: https://matrix.itasoftware.com/search if you ask it to only show this fare class (put "F bc=Q|bc=O" in the extension codes field).

    • One thing to keep in mind though is that the Tokyo-Fukuoka leg is via Haneda, while the Melbourne-Tokyo leg is via Narita.

  • Included: 2x 23kg bags, meals and entertainment

Is this per flight or each flight is 23kg?

  • +1

I don't see any cheap prices for February 2025 from Sydney direct

  • The cheapest deals are via Mytrip.com
I've never used this portal, are they reliable? Would it be the same price booking directly via JAL?

I can only find very limited date combinations on the site for August

  • looks like all melbourne sold out, tried heaps of differnent august/sep dates nothing worked and kept saying booked out

    • Yeah all the prices have gone up by 200-300 bucks

  • I'm wanting to book a flight between Melbourne and Vancouver, and JAL is coming up as one of the best options. My question to the OzBargain community, is how do you manage to book in a 2/3 day layover in Japan as part of your flight? Is this possible?

    • +2

Yes book it as a multi-city trip

  • just returned from 2 weeks trip tokyo-Osaka via Jetstar (last return for free sale), paid only 1.3k for family of 3. Insane value, cant wait til the next sale (missed the most recent one as we were over there and didnt check ozb….lol)
