1/2 Price SunRice Medium Grain White or Brown Rice 5kg $9.50 @ Coles

870

Noted the brown rice was half off when I was intending to buy Coles branded 1kg brown rice, so grabbed a 5kg bag instead.

A no brainer for less than $2 per kg.

Thanks OP, time to stock up. They go on sale often enough that I never buy at full price.

    • Remember to freeze for a few days to kills bugs and eggs, unless you want the extra protein

      • +3

Don't have a big enough freezer I'm afraid. Have yet to encounter any creepy crawlies spawning inside my rice bags and hopefully it'll stay that way🤞

      • +1

Just rinse the rice and let it soak in clean water for an hour

Not really aware of this. Now I'll be paranoid to check my rice for weevil eggs before cooking :|
So far I haven't any weevil from my rice before, I assume they would be easy to spot coz they would be black in colour.
Also heard that this is usually common for warm climate areas.

        • I found some some dead floaters in the jasmine rice when I soaked it in hot water for 30 Min a few days ago

        • +3

If they are there then you have been eating them for your whole life with no ill effects. So why start stressing about it now

        • I found weevil in sunrice bag before also Uncle Toby oats

      • +8

I have never heard people freezing rice before cooking. I do rinse the rice at least 3 times before cooking. I've been following my mum's way before cooking the rice.

      • Weevils seem common in rice and wheat

    • Sunrice is Australian grown and I've been buying it for years, am yet to find anything off-colour in it.
What's the point in freezing when it's going to get cooked for 15-20 mins anyway?

      • Freeze for 24hrs kills bugs and eggs

        • Won't cooking the rice also kill them?

          • @bonezAU: Extra protein and gross factor, no matter how thoroughly you wash the rice.

            • +1

@anonym: Fair enough, but my question was regarding freezing it first. That doesn't remove the extra protein or gross factor any more than cooking the rice does.

Both are going to result in dead bugs and eggs, so what's the point in freezing it first?

              • +1

@bonezAU: Freezing kills the eggs so the bugs don't spawn, because they can also leave droppings in your bag of rice. You'd want to freeze the rice as soon as you buy them, but I'm limited in terms of freezer space so I'll just have to take my chances.

            • +1

@anonym: Soak with lots of water and they float. Scoop the top, discard, shake the rice around until no more bugs float.

              • @easternculture: Still gross tho. Hasn't happened to me in years so knock on wood.

This used to cost like $5.00 when on special, now, half price for a full price back then!

    • +2

The price actually came down a bit, I think it went as high as $11.50 half price last year.

Now olive oil is on the rise

  • Where do ppl sit on the white vs. brown rice divide?

    • Personal preference: medium grain / short grain white rice.

For the sake of my health: brown rice.

      • +1

difference in GI level isn’t that huge actually.
        Maybe more fibre?

        • Negligibly more fibre in brown rice. Honestly all the difference is negligible. But brown rice is much harder to cook so I go with white

        • +1

There are also other micro nutrients in brown rice.i buy quick cooking dawaat basmati rice .it's quick cooking and fluffy and basmati

        • Brown: at least a small amount more protein, more fibre, whole grain (lower GI). Probably a marginal difference cf. white. Some raise concerns about higher trace amounts of arsenic, and phytate.

Probably two more important factors than your choice brown vs. white:

One is portion, how much per serving (thus, glycaemic load)

And two is the meal, what is added to it, particularly in regard to lean protein sources and plentiful veg.

I just started eating brown rice and don't think I'll ever go back to white

      • Does the brown rice taste the same as the white? I want to change to brown rice but worry my daughter wouldn’t like it.

        • +1

Kids are more sensitive to changes in flavor and texture than adults so it's probably better to test things out first with a smaller bag.

        • Brown rice more like the al dente version of white rice but worse IMO

        • Quite different tastes, brown rice is a bit earthy. If you want to try it maybe do a brown rice pilaf or something flavourful to make the transition easier.

      • If you soak brown rice overnight before cooking, it forms quite a pleasant chew a bit similar to Thai wild rice

        • I soak it in hot water for 2 hrs beforehand

      • Wait until you've had black

        • +1

Ill probably never go back 🤣🤣🤣

    • I prefer the bitier texture of brown rice

    • Saw this from google while looking for healthy rice options.
      Brown rice contains arsenic.
Long-term consumption of arsenic may increase your risk of chronic diseases including cancer, heart disease, and type 2 diabetes. However, this should not be a concern if you eat rice in moderation as part of a varied diet.
Since I eat a lot of rice this might not be a good option for me :|

          That is sarcasm

  • I learnt recently you can cook brown rice in a pressure cooker. The texture is amazing! And doesn't take that much time at all.

  • I mix it half half with the white. Absorption method

  • To my asians friends here ! Is this the rice used to make fried rice ? I use basmati rice but I bet the Chinese shop near my home uses a short/medium rice . Not sure if they use jasmine rice to make fried rice .
