ALDI Pots Buying Frenzy

Went to Aldi this morning to buy some Chili chips and bread. Saw a horde of people buying trolley load of Aldi pots. What's up with that?

I literally saw at least 10 different people walking out with their shopping trolleys full of pots, pans and other utensils. At least $500/$600 worth if not more.

Aren't we in a highly inflationary environment where we can't afford to pay rent? Do these pots have a black market or something? Where would people even store these many pots?

"inflammatory". or "inflationary" - latter makes more sense?

    • lolz.. good pickup. Both apply if you ask me but I fixed it anyway

    • When it comes to "cooking", its "inflammatory"

    can't afford to pay rent

I think the issue for some people is they can’t afford the latest iPhone, a new TV, eurotrash wagon repayments, the $6000 designer puppy and ongoing costs, the $800 handbag, alcohol, new clothes every couple of months, takeout multiple times a week, and to pay rent…

    • sounds pretty specific…

      "can't afford to pay rent"

      What a load of Hogwash

Few and far between and its always the same people who are living off welfare payments.
But even these people can afford cigarettes, alcohol and playing the pokies.

Comes down to budgeting and spending priorities

Aldi special buys engineer false urgency. People getting swept up because stock is limited and there are some genuinely good buys (I picked up a second cast iron dutch oven for 1/20 what I paid for the Le Creuset). Yes, special buys run out, but they'll probably cycle them around again within 12 months.

    • Curious what you would use two for. I don't know what to do with the one that I have. Everything I cook is either in slow cooker or air fryer.

Honestly, it's mostly on backup duty. On some occasions, I'll have one slow cooking in the oven, and the other on the stove with something else.

Strange… it's a repeat of a 2021 deal where it was $20 : https://www.news.com.au/lifestyle/real-life/news-life/aldi-2… Might be a good deal for elderly as light and cooks faster.

    • Likely everyone who had FOMO then is rushing in now.

Shame, I wanted a griddle plate, was kind of hoping there'd still be some when I pop in tomorrow. I'm guessing not.

      • My Aldi had hundreds of stock left just before coding tonight.

  • you sure its not just oregano?
i know we have medical now, but still think it requires a script and from specialist suppliers.

  • Aren't we in a highly inflationary environment where we can't afford to pay rent

What was the average age of those people?

    • Middle aged or couples with young children.

      • There you go

Middle aged probably own and aren't involved in the rental crisis you speak of.

Also a bargain is a bargain

"Aren't we in a highly inflationary environment where we can't afford to pay rent?" Nope we're in a highly wealth divided environment where some have less and some have more. I guess OZ suffers less than many countries though. But sooner or later there will be $10 crockpots at KMart, and $15000 crockpots with designer labels and nothing in between.

  • Ain’t nothin special bout Aldi that make me queue for n.. .

Part of the answer lies in the latest Choice test of "pots & pans" where ALDI product outrated some of the major brands.

  • There are a lot of people who are finding it tough. Some because they are bad at budgeting etc but you also have a large number of people who work but low to medium income and things are getting tighter.

The cap is getting greater and greater between low and high income earners because pay increases are a percentage not a set dollar figure increase for all.
