Anyone know how the armadale goes comfort wise compared to the comfort craftsman?

      • +4

Is this an Armadale, WA reference? 😂 Not many in the east would get it

        • +1

Lol it was, I worked there for a few weeks and I saw some wild things

          Lol harsh crowd

    • -1

I dont think these pairs on sale were made at their Adelaide store.
When you sesrch the classic craftsman boots they state that yhey were made in their adelaide store.

    • +2

Have had mine for nearly 4 years now. 1 sole replacement. Will last for many more I think.

      • I said they are 4yo now and still going very strong and look great. They will last many more.

      • +2

Did you go through RM Williams for the replacement?

      • My RMs are going on 16 years, well used and still wearing perfectly.

    • +12

Is this a joke question? Kmart chelsea boots are made out of multiple pieces of plastic. RM Williams are made out of single piece of leather. Kmart boots are glued to the sole while RM Williams are using goodyear welt construction.

As a result, Kmart $35 boots won't last even 6 months if wearing them daily so you will need many pairs to make up for lack of durability. It's bad for environment and in the long run, you are not really saving all that much if anything.

RM Williams will last for years. And will age gracefully.

      • -3

No it's not a joke question.
So the rm Williams last 4 years and the Kmart last 6 months.
So I can buy 8 pairs in that 4 years and still save $200?

        • -1

OK, for argument sake, let's say you save $50 every year by cycling through Kmart boots.

But because you need to buy 2 pairs each year, you will be going through breaking period of new shoes twice a year. That's being uncomfortable for a few days every time you get a new pair. How much would you value to avoid that? If you value it more than $50 per year, then RM Williams comes ahead.

          • @lubos: Also need to drive to Kmart so factor in $10 fuel + lost time… At least $30

            • +2

@itshammer: Chances are when go to Kmart to buy shoes, end up buying other unnecessary stuff as well.

            • -1

@itshammer: You don't have one pass for free delivery? Hand in your OzB badge please

          • +1

@lubos: You are acting like he cannot just buy multiple pairs at once. Furthermore there's downtime when you have your boots resoled. Also claiming the Kmart shoes will only last 6 months is disingenuous. Used to wear similarly priced shoes to primary/high school and only had to replace them every year after I outgrew them.

A better argument is the $500 dollar boots are far more comfortable than Kmart shoes, which they are and I can attest to since I own several pairs of RMs…

        • +6

More like 10+ years with proper care and replacing soles as required.

        • +3

It sounds like a joke, if you can’t appreciate quality or craftsmanship and the fact that it is an Australian brand that manufactures here, these aren’t made for you.

        • +6

You be in the Ozb elite RM Williams club and you get to brag about longevity stinky shoes. Can't do that with the Kmart shoes.

          • +3

@Icecold5000: Dude, some people are on minimum wage, maybe not even because of their own choice. No need to put them down.

          • @Icecold5000: So you barely make 6 figures after tax. Congratulations for just making middle class

            • -1

@ozdog64: That’s the whole point. To illustrate how stupid it is to save $200 while going around wearing uncomfortable plastic shoes made in China for 4 years. You would literally have to be a moron to have come up with that argument.

        • +3

RMs will last decades if taken care of correctly

      • In addition to the difference in price and quality, you are also supporting a local Australian manufacturing business owned by Australian Andrew and Nicola Forrest.

However times are tough so buy what you can afford but you asked and the ozb community responded.

        • +4

Supporting the second richest person in Australia, who is already getting billions in subsidies from the government in our taxes is actually an anti-incentive to buy the shoes. Having said that, I ldo love mine and the fact that they are still made in Australia.

          • +1

@elektron: These businesses will always be owned by billionaires and would rather local Australian billionaire to own it who have vested interests in bringing back manufacturing back to Australian shores.

          • +1

@elektron: Other options are family owned (elderly sisters in Tasmania) Blundstones… That are made in Thailand.

          • @elektron: They seem pretty good, but not made of a single piece of leather (much more expensive) and comparable to this R.M. Williams sale price despite not being made here.

All thing considered the R.M. are arguably better value at this price point.

      • I bought a pair of rivers boots once and they literally separated upper from sole while I was in the middle of the CDB. They only lasted 3-4 months.
But I'm also somewhat envious of people who have $500 to mail-order shoes that they don't know if they fit properly.

      • +1

I have 2 pairs and they are both more than a decade old and both have been resoled twice. Bought them for about $200 in the early days

    • +3

Some people buy toyotas, some people buy mercedes.
Both get you A to B.

      • +1

I guess the RM are toyota and last years then 😁

      • And some people buy Mercedes and wear Adidas slides.

        • After 3 years mecedes live at the mechanics store hehe

      • You mean Lexus instead of Mercedes as Lexus last longer than 3 star repository

    • -2

      Are you freaking serious?

    • +1

Since people are going to see these and find they missed out and others are going to dump on RM's as too expensive not worth is etc, as a community service I'll just hammer out some alternatives here but keep in mind that RM's cost as much as they do for three reasons

      Where they are made- Australia
How they are made- Goodyear welted, cork, steel shank
What they are made of- Single piece of yearling leather, that means single pieces of flawless leather joined at the back only. Not easy to do.

No other boot will tick all three boxes, if you want something that will hit two of the three or something your choices are

Patfields: A clone of the comfort craftsman in G sizes, Made in India, decent soles, glued construction can be resoled.

Baxter Boots: The Goulburn is the closest to a pair of RM's, Goodyear Welted made in China.

Mandic: If you can find a pair of the Gilmore in your size left they are made in Australia and Goodyear Welted, the Gilmore Kangaroo is basically the same as the Patfields.

Mongrel: The 805's not build like a pair of RM's but are made in Australia and their dress boot but they are TPU outsole and are cemented or vulcanised. They have a shank in there, so try them on but they can be had for like $90 and they'll polish up just fine.

  • +2

The quality of my last pair has gone down compared to my first, in particular the paint on the leather

    • When did you buy each out of curiosity?

      • +1

First pair - can't remember exactly, but i bought from a store that was based in a country NSW town that had a decent online store, ~2017

        Second pair - the iconic.

    • The ones on sale in this forum are not made in their adelaide store. That could be the reason why.

Sesrch iconic you will find the classics that are "not on sale and they are made in they Adelaide store.

  • +1

Thank you OP - bought a pair as I was after some good boots. First time using iconic so got $20 off for signing up as well.

Was tempted by the suede, but decided to go Armadale for classic look.

        Thanks - Can confirm HEYICONIC75 works - paid $411.75

        • +1

Great price. Under 400 is better but close.

          • @mrtin: Stack with Shopback 3% and it comes just below $400

      • +1

Bro!!! Ah well, you win some you lose some. Ive emailed them to see if they can give me the extra $55. At least my post got to help others

  • I really like these boots, but can not bring myself to spend that amount of money on them. Serious question, what are you getting over and above a cheaper alternative boot that makes it worth the extra money?

    • +10

My colleagues buy them because "everyone has one" (kinda true) and they "want to support Australian manufacturing". I bought mine because of #1, and my honest opinion is they are not worth the additional dollarydoos if you're solely (no pun intended) after comfort and don't mind not having the little brown pull tabs for added street cred around Sydney's Martin Place.

I have a few chelsea boots from different brands and RMs took the longest to break in, which meant a longer period of discomfort. Even after breaking them in, I don't think my RMs are noticeably more comfortable over my other boots.

Other brands may not have the same leather quality but with proper care (cleaning + moisturising + boot tree) they hold up pretty well. The only advantage RMs have here (in my opinion) is their network of certified repair centres providing OEM parts, but expect to pay through the nose for them. I have also been told by an RM store that the repair centre would not touch a boot that has undergone a "non-certified repair".

On a lesser note, I also found the store attendants at some RM boutiques (cough)George St(cough) to be very selective of the client profile they like to engage with. Obviously my experience is not reflective across the population but make what you will of that statement.

Surprisingly had same experience at the garden city and carindale Westfield branches in brisbane. Like what - my money not good enough for yalls?

Coked up inner city lawyers and consultants only please.

Total opposite at Melbourne Central - and I was in my gym gear!

      • +1

RM stores (in Victoria) have always given me exceptional customer service, and I have been to most of their stores in Victoria. Perhaps it is specific to that store or more prevalent in NSW.

However, I have been profiled when looking at RM's elsewhere. One such example was at DJ's in Bourke St, the attendant before assisting me informed that RM's are "expensive, they are not on sale and we do not price match". So totally understand profiling does occur, but surprised to hear it happens at RM stores.

        • Disclosing ‘we don’t price match’ before you start looking is helpful as it’s going to avoid awkward conversations

          • +1

@Jimothy Wongingtons: I agree if this would be fine in isolation, but not when combined with "this is expensive and are not on sale". Obviously not how a customer interaction should begin.

I've done my time in retail and I would never kick off a conversation with a potential customer essentially telling them they can't afford this item.

        • Send am email to corporate complaining, I bet they hate that shit.

      Get some alternates from Spain

      https://int.meermin.com/collections/mens-boots

Quality leathers, all Goodyear Welted, reasonable prices

      • I've been looking at Meermin's for a while, as an alternative to RMs. But, the reviews regarding their customer support for Aus seem to be fairly poor

      • Out of stock.
        https://int.meermin.com/products/101050-expresso-antique-cal…

Looks nice this meerm8n. Where are they manufactured?

      • Meermins are a pain to get sizing right, their lasts are pretty narrow probably because they are European.

    • +1

Probably overpriced like most things in Aus. However, does not mean it is not superior to your average department store glued together boot with a zipper on the side.

    • Greatest benefit is goodyear welt, which means the boot is resoleable, and you can continue wearing the same pair forever. For longevity and safety's sake, you are better off choosing an RM model with a vibram rubber sole, since those have the best traction and lifespan. However, most RM William models do not come with the vibram sole, as the traditional stacked leather sole is far more aesthetic and popular.

Thing is, none of these traits are exclusive to RM Williams. You are primarily paying for the brand. If comfort is what you are after, instead you should be looking at high end walking shoes. These won't last as long but you'll be paying half the amount, and they are way more comfortable and supportive. Shoe technology has come a very long way since RM William's boot making traditions.

  • +1

Can anyone confirm which letter width these are (G vs H)? Haven’t been able to find it on the site

  • +1

I suspect we can now get the Vibram sole officially replaced on the comfort craftsman, which is cool.

  • Why are there no in between sizes

  • +4

For those of you wanting to support Australian but don’t want to spend this price, Redback boots are Australian owned and Australian made, and often go on sale. I bought my last pair for $100 about four years ago and I wear them every day to work in an office type job and sometimes in the garden. They still look great. Best $100 I’ve ever spent on a pair of boots.

    • Mongrel (same parent company) are good for 2E feet. I got some "2nd" (small issue) riding boots for ~$100 off eBay. More comfy than my ~8yr old craftsmen out the box.

      • +1

Yep I’ve bought two pairs (third on the way). Closer to $90 each if you have eBay plus. Great boots for the price.

    • Thank you, i will have a look into the redback boots.

  • Lets be honest this should be their RRP

    • Twiggy's ex has a lot to answer for.

  • +1

Blunstones do a good dress boot now. It's still got some guts but it's great for the office. Made in China though I think but very good quality.

  • -1

Young Liberal wannbe favourite shoe to wear in the CBD.

I wannabe a boomer conservative, should I start wearing K-mart/costco clothing in the outback?

      • Depends. Is your idea of the outback the blue mountains?

        • What? I thought I only have to go to Parramatta

  • I assume ebony colour is just black, is this correct?

  • +1

Every RM post always creates a lively debate on OzB. The shoe isn't for everyone, but I do agree the retail price can be hard to swallow. I only have 2 pairs, both of which were purchased on sales. My oldest pair is over 5 years old, has been re-heeled once and still looks amazing, while still being super comfortable.

  • Origin Energy customers still have access to 30% off full price items (min spend $150). I think we can generate unlimited codes

    • Doesn’t work for RM Williams

  • size H or G from Iconic ?

  • Bought my pair of RMs from an Iconic sale a few years ago and they are fantastic, still look close to new. Added a pair of the Lichens today in this sale and I reckon that might do me for a long while.
