[VIC] Myki Getting Frequently Overcharged - Anyone Successful with Reimbursement Requests?

I have recently shifted to an eastern suburb and my daily travel is within zone 2 as per PTV journey planner. I take bus and then switch to tram 75. I do touch on and off on every bus and tram.

Now here's the part which really confuses me. My start and end stop and return journey were the exact same stops with same bus and tram route for different days, however once I was charged $10.60 and once $6.60 (It was not sunday). $6.60 is the full day fare for zone 2. My whole journey shows within zone 2 on PTV app, however when I break it to individual trips for bus and tram , it shows zone 2 for bus($3.30) and zone 1/2($5.30) for tram. I dont understand how this works.

This was not the only instance. Its kind of 50-50 at the moment for me. Even on different routes for within zone 2 sometimes charges me $10.60 while PTV journey planner shows its within zone 2. I raised reimbursement requests for all of these instances, however only one was approved and rest were rejected.

When I checked my myki history it shows that sometimes the bus route touch on gets detected as zone 1/2 and gets charged $5.30, sometimes tram route touch on gets detected as a wrong zone. Mind you that this occurred when I took the exact same stops journey on a different day. The day it charged $6.60 showed correctly in myki history.

I am tired of calling PTV everytime for the refund and get response that based on my myki history I was in XYZ location when touched on. I am claiming that some buses and trams have faulty equipment that are failing to map as per zone locations.

Have anyone encountered something like this? Have anyone been successful in getting reimbursement requests approved?

It looks like you were getting undercharged

    • May I know how?

      • -4

Ask PTV, they can explain it better than me.

        • But you feel that I was getting undercharged, you can explain better

            @spv004:

            you can explain better

I appears like you were being charged less than what you should have.

            • @jv: Daily fare in zone 2 is $6.60. OP was charged $10.60, which is the rate for zone 1+2.

It appears like you are comprehending less than what you should have.

              • @freefall101: Obviously they didn't touch on and off in zone 2, that results in being charged the zone 1+2 fare…

                • @jv: Except OP clearly stated that's not the problem, the problem is the location listed where they touched on is incorrect.

Which wouldn't surprise me, waiting at a bus/tram stop and watching the app tell me a bus/tram supposedly just went past me isn't uncommon. Their tracking is garbage.

Wonder if it is anything to do with the fact Victoria is basically bankrupt and they need to screw every cent out of people they can?

    • You and your bankrupt lies…… Noticed you ignored the facts in the other post.

    • They could just increase camera fines and boom, surplus.

    • Yes, I'm sure they're planning to screw people out of $2 because Victoria is "bankrupt"…

    • Is basically bankrupt different to bankrupt?

      • One presumes there is still cashflow. The other, none.

  • Now here's the part which really confuses me

Without posting the stops you are getting on/off at, its really hard to help you work out the issue.

I'm guessing you are on the 'border' for one. So might depend on the GPS for the tram/bus etc if it thinks you are in zone 1 or 2.

Try taking the next stop along so you are closer/more in the zone 2.

    • Alright, start stop is syndal station bus 703, end stop is stop #61 presbyterian ladies college tram route 75

      • That sure sounds like all Zone 2.

Have you tried contacting Public Transport Users Association? They may be able to help.

        • I did. One of my refund request got approved. But this is happening almost at every alternate travel. Some requests got rejected saying that your touch on location is showing zone 1

          • @spv004: The PTUA don't do the refunds - are you talking about when you contacted PTV?

The PTUA may help by advocating on your behalf due to the errors, or otherwise explain how to fix the issue (if it is something that you can do).

            • @DogGunn: Sorry I got confused. I raised refund requests and contacted PTV

      • So as I guessed, you are on the 'border' for one of the stops.

While it looks like it should be all zone 2 as you do the following trip. Catch the tram at

Stop #61 aka Stop ID 21099 which is classed as Zone 1 & Zone 2. Heading to Stop #59 aka Stop ID 21096 is also Zone 1 & Zone 2.

Then jump on the bus at Stop ID 15912 being Zone 2, heading to Stop ID 15881 which is also Zone 2.

You might need to present the request to them as above when asking for a refund.

But to me, the issue seems to be the tram as that would be coming from zone 1 so I'm guessing its flagged as being in zone 1 still and hasn't moved to the Zone 1/2 boundary overlap area. So thinks you are touching on in zone 1 to start your trip instead of the zone 1/2 cross over area.

Also the other question is, how do you get to syndal station? No other PT on the day?

Ways to fix it? Don't touch on for the tram for a bit until its away from the city more for your trip home, hopefully being in zone 2 by then. Same for heading there, touch off 'early' so you are well within the zone 2 area.

Also make sure you touch off, otherwise you'll get the default zone 1/2 fare.

        • Yeah this makes sense in case of trams. This is the myki history for one of the instances

          https://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/488173/112015/myki_his…

I live nearby it so the journey itself starts from there

Looks like you didn't touch off on the tram in that one (but got auto touched off on the bus when you touched on). While it should be smart enough to flag it all in zone 2, they say don't do that for trams, unless travelling in zone 1/2 :/

So make sure you touch on and off on the tram and see what happens. PTV says to touch on/off for trams if you are only travelling in a zone 2. I think you might be getting the default zone 1/2 fare for touching on the tram, but not off it.

Best of luck on your next trip!

            Trams
If you're travelling in Zone 1+2, remember to touch on. You don’t need to touch off.
If you're just travelling in the city's Free Tram Zone, don't touch on or off.
If you’re just travelling in Zone 2, touch on and off for a cheaper fare.

            • @JimmyF: But this scenario considers that you are travelling just by trams correct? When I switch to bus it touches off and on right?

This is another instance, different route but all in zone 2
              https://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/488173/112016/myki_his…

The start point was the same stop #61, how tf route 70 is showing here?

Looks like my brain is going to explode

              • @spv004:

But this scenario considers that you are travelling just by trams correct?

It's so the tram records the correct zone 'usage' for your trip. Otherwise you default to the zone 1/2 fare.

When I switch to bus it touches off and on right?

It did an auto touch off, but recorded against the bus not the tram :/

I'm sure there is some wonky back end logic that is happening looking at only the mode of transport touch on/off trips.

This is another instance, different route but all in zone 2

Yeah that one shows you didn't touch on for that tram at all, but the touch off is in zone 1 :/

Also looks to be a different route.

The start point was the same stop #61, how tf route 70 is showing here?

Guessing the tram was set to the wrong route?

Looks like my brain is going to explode

Skip touching on and off on the trams if you can, and you'll have less headaches!

              • @spv004: Definitely try touching off on the tram. As mentioned, the default fare will apply if you don't (which is z1+2).

Still won't help for when the tram thinks it is in Zone 1 only still.

Have a chat with the bus driver, explain the error. Check if it's ok to tap on once a bit further into Zone 2. Also don't tap off on the bus for the all day.

    • But the issue happens with both trams mostly

      • I would then wait a few stops to make sure you are in zone 2 fully before touching on.

    • Bus driver can't do anything.

  • Do you still have the reference numbers for the rejected cases?
You may consider contacting the PT Ombudsman at https://www.ptovic.com.au/complaints/complaints-we-can-help-… and see if they can help.
