Audi A3 - Is It a 2018 or 2019 Model Year?

Looking to buy an Audi A3 which is My19 and compliance date May 2019. I did a recheck and it does say 2019 But all the insurance quotes are telling me it’s MY18!

I understand it can be built 2018 but compliance in 2019. The other issue is it doesn’t have A3 or TFSI embossed on back of the car as I have seen most A3’s have embossing at the back.

Is it legit not to have embossing on back of Audi? Will it be an issue for insurance (2018 or 2019)?

Do you think it might be a cheap Chinese knock-off made after hours in the factory?

Buying a 5yro Audi you will have bigger issues…

Compliance means nothing, that's simply when it was allocated to the dealer

Have you done a PPSR? Maybe the old owner hated how cluttered it was, and debadged it?

Will it be an issue for insurance (2018 or 2019)?

As long as it's insured as the relevant model, no

    • This one?

That's been debadged, it's not "embossed" lol. Also seems to be sold according to Gumtree?

      Example of badged car

    • I have done a ppsr and it does say MY19 and build 2019.

      To be specific

      1. Compliance plate - Once a shipment of cars is offloaded in Australia, vehicles go into “bonded storage”, a large holding area where they are kept until import duties and any other tariffs are paid. The vehicles are then fitted with a number of extra identification plates or labels, to show they comply with Australian Motor Vehicle Standards.

      2. The vehicle branding is stuck onto the car and can be removed by anyone. I used to remove mine from the back due to cluttering of the boot area. The same model could go by a different name in another country. Hence doesnt affect car identifcation or insurnace. Its all about the VIN number to which all relevent model data is attached.

      3. The relevent information is on the manufacture plate and compliance plate. The dates could differ by several months. Just like first registered date could be months after compliance date. Doesnt change the build date. If you plug in your VIN number it should bring up the correct details

      Everything fully explained here:
      https://autoexpert.com.au/posts/build-date-vs-model-year-my-…

But to answer OPs question it should definitely be MY2019 if compliance plate is May 2019

      • build date and complied date are different

        • Thats exactly right.
As all vehicles are now imported they cannot be the same.

But a car with a May Compliance plate would be of the same Model year (MY)

          So whats your point?

      • Amazing how many uninformed people here neg-vote the FACTS.

You cannot change the facts by neg-voting fellow OBers.

Does it have eco tyres on the rear and performance tyres on the front?

    • +1

      All performance tyres

Why are you looking to buy a tarted up Volkswagen Golf?

    • +1

Probably because it has an Audi badge on it.

If you can't afford a new Audi A3 then you definitely can't afford a secondhand one.

RIP for asking Audi a question in a Toyota forum.

What is the 10th digit of the VIN??

        K = 2019

  • Why multiple insurance quotes telling me it’s MY18 Build 2018?

    • +3

Maybe ask them, how would we know?

    • +1

Because insurance companies have no idea? I get quotes for a hatch for my car when it's a sedan.

    • Assume this is a quote using the rego number to auto-populate, so maybe it is registered as that? Should be able to just ignore that part anyway and manually enter/select the vehicle details.

      • That’s exactly what insurance rep told me over the phone.

  • Although PPSR does state MY19 build 2019!

    • Insurances have many ways to lower possible payouts. Most have been moved overseas. Good luck chasing a claim!

    Don't do it.

    Stay away from Audi's.

The maintenance costs get so much worse as it gets older. A water pump recently cost me $1700.

    • +4

The water pump was $300. The labour to dismantle the whole front end to access the water pump cost $1400.

      • If you went for the original plastic pump, you will fork out another $1700 in x number of years.

If you like fixing your own cars, Audi is a good brand. An old Audi leaking oil and coolant, Congrats you bought a genuine Audi. You will have endless issues from piston rings that get choked with oil to electric coolant pump that catches fire when overheat. It's a nice car to drive I like my Audi very much, I also spend more time under the car as it ages. Once you get them fixed, the timer restarts again.

The maintenance costs get so much worse as it gets older. New injectors and a head gasket cost ~$8000.

Didn't think owning a car could be that stressful.

*PS no one cares that you drive a rebadged VW Golf, if anything people have more respect if you by something korean or japanese.

I could afford an Audi A5 (dream car) brand new + maintenance costs. I don't do it because i'm not a masochist and actually want to get a car that can get me from A-B reliably. Instead drive an LDV because i realised no one cares about the badge, and the ones that do aren't the ones you necessarily want to hang out with.

    • How many K’s are you talking about?

      • 150,000k's
Mechanic literally said it would be cheaper to do an engine swap given the labour and costs for each injector.

You can always stick a Golf badge later. Pretty cheap to buy on AliExpress.

  • I did a recheck and it does say 2019 But all the insurance quotes are telling me it’s MY18!

When you do the insurance quotes, are you using their tool that picks up the model based on registration plate? It could be that that's not correct. I'm in Vic and mine (yes, it's an Audi too!) is not correct on the database, so when I go to the insurer's webpage and input my rego, it brings up the previous shape (the shape from earlier that year). Mine is from later that year, when they switched over to the new shape).

So for quotes, I need to manually select my vehicle and shape.

    • Yes, I was using that tool but the rep over the phone told me to manually select.

      • I think it's just an error in the database. The plate riveted to the car will be the actual.

  • +2

When you do your quote, don't enter rego plate, manually select car.

  • Ex R8 RS6 RS4 owner here.

Get an RS with factory warranty. Yes, they're unreliable.

Yes, all of them understeer too much IMO, even the R8 (on the track).

  • It doesnt matter. Just make sure whatever feature you want from '19 model is there.

  • Cheers everyone for your comments/suggestions. I have sorted the insurance out.

      Enjoy your new car!
