Part of what makes these so great is the price, anything over $2 is hard to swallow when theyre like $1 in Japan.

    • -4

well, businesses need to pay double the salary too…

      • +3

They are all made in Japan so salary remains the same.. I could even understand an 25% increase to cover the supply chain(even thats being generous, as suntory would already have that supply chain organised well before Boss coffee came around). Hard to blame them for cashing in on what every other company seems to be doing to Australians, but that does not mean I am gonna be happy about it either.

        • -4

made in japan but not sold in japan?

supply chain 25% increase?? you don't need to pay the person stacking the shelves?

for $1.25 (25% increase) how many do I need to sell in an hour to generate enough profit to cover the person stacking the shelves

          • +2

            @FIVEDOLLAR:

made in japan but not sold in japan?

Yes its sold in Japan, just in cans for the Japanese market, not an english market.

supply chain 25% increase?? you don't need to pay the person stacking the shelves?

Its being sold by Amazon.. No shelf stackers..

Lets do the maths with what we know. $1.25 each - 25c mark up per item sold, cases are 30 cans. That 25% mark up equates to $7.50 per case moved. If a pallet is 100 cases then that means they are making $750 per pallet of boss coffee(give or take here as we don't have numbers). Given the beauty of upscaling with large businesses they could be moving hundreds of pallets, I reckon 25% is plenty for logistics. Maybe market it up to $1.50 to pay the shelf stackers, they are still making a massive profit on these things no matter what way you look at it.

@doobey1231: why do you think it's cheaper for amazon to ship out 1 can to your door than your local?

one of the many challenges we face is the sheer density of japan's cities compared to Australia.

though I don't disagree that the full price is expensive, I think it's quite delusional to compare the prices in japan as a tourist.

              • +2

@FIVEDOLLAR: I think you are taking in bits of information and not others. I am not saying they should cost X amount because of how much they cost in Japan, I am saying there isn't 2-3 dollars per can worth of added expenses to bring them here and that they are priced incredibly high.

                • -1

@doobey1231: Yes many factors determine the price and I'm saying it's simplistic to view the price via one small portion of the costs that you've factored in.

You wanted to say that it might cost differently because this deal is sold by Amazon, however I can assure you, the shipping is more than what it is if a fair price was charged if you're going to cost this again.

        • +2

That's overly simplistic. Warehousing costs in Australia, stevedores at ports, truck drivers and fuel excise, tolls, suntory staff in australia plus superannuation, GST, insurance, Amazon fees. More hands, more costs, everyone wants their cut unfortunately. And these are the costs I can see, maybe more that we don't see like shipment admin fee, cost of capital.

          • +1

@Sweetnsour: Of course its overly simplistic, we are dealing with private operating companies, of which we are never going to get the actual numbers, we can only work on estimates. Most of what you have mentioned is covered under supply chain. Given Suntory existed in Australia well before Boss came to market, the cost of adding a couple more employees to cover extra logistics(again included in supply chain %) is minimal. I did really rough estimates as like I said we wont get official numbers, but $7.50 per case is plenty to cover the expenses of bringing the new products to market.

        • Think you underestimating the cost of the Australian supply chain

          • @Pacify: I work with supply chains specifically out of Japan, so not even close to underestimating it. I know exactly how it works and I can promise you the retail price does not add up to the potential costings, not even knowing the official information.

            • +1

@doobey1231: Sounds like a business opportunity for you if its attractive enough.

However other companies may find in australia customer acquisition costs, marketing, competition may be your barriers to get enough scale in such as small market like aus. The competition isnt just other packaged coffee too, we have more coffee options, caffeine options, or drink options too

Great coffee, looking forward to my single can arriving.

    • lol

Knowing amazon, it'll be one can packed in an excessively big box for the item

      • Sole reason why I try to make sure there are atleast 3 needed items in the order before i click buy.

  • Showing temporarily out of stock, ozbargained out

  • +2

I would have bought a pallet if they allowed it

  • +3

Double espresso is the best flavour - shame they are seldom stocked at Colesworths/amazon.

  • +3

Coles and Woolies recently increased the 4 pack price from $12 to $14. Won't be buying any more unless they're on special.

    • +3

They're actually trying to flog these off at craft beer prices

    • Better go to Coles to buy 4 cans @$2.5 each now, so equal with 4 pack @$14 but only need to pay $10 for 4 cans = 4 pack

    • Nescafe blend 43 + Nestle Coffee Mate + Sugar. Make 4 cups for under $2.

      • +1

Coffee in a can is for convenience, similar like coffee in a bottle (Dare, etc). When we are travelling or walking while far from any cafes/restaurants that sell coffee, these coffee can/bottle is convenient to bring

  • Aw wheres the vanilla

  • These Suntory coffee flavours taste like dish water to be honest but I know Japanese/Korean coffee-flavourings tend to be really weird compared to similar Western products; they seem to love watered-down, diluted, vague coffee flavours compared to the strong, bold coffee flavours preferred in Western countries.

  • OOS

  • +4

Every time I drink these I wonder to myself why we don't have vending machines selling warm/ice canned coffees like in Japan.

  • +1

would grab some if they had the iced double espresso option

  • +2

Wow, surprised to see so many here like this product so much.

As coffee drinkers in Aus, I woulda thought that people would go for their local Baristas choice over this.

Personally, I really cant stomach the taste of these, and would happily pay $4-$5 for a properly made and tasting coffee.

    • Each to their own. Not everyone wants fresh hot coffee which have variability. Some prefer cold coffee and imo there isnt much difference once you add sugar between fresh brewed ice coffee and premade. Plus the added convenience of being available 24/7 caffeine. Espresso machine coffee is still a small percentage compared to drip and instant. Know your customer as they say.

      • +1

Yeah but Suntory's flavours still taste terrible even compared to any run-of-the-mil, cheap iced coffee brands like Masters, unless for some reason you like watered-down, slightly coffee flavoured milk.

I wouldn't classify these in the same galaxy as a proper, barista-made iced coffee at a decent cafe.

Some prefer cold coffee and imo there isnt much difference once you add sugar between fresh brewed ice coffee and premade.

Lol. You don't go to cafes much, do you?

    • Fellow coffee snob here. At $2.50 a can I think these are great. At $4 though i'm with you.

      • Agree with you, okay for casual drink. But better value with coffee bottle (around 500 ml) with almost similar price like under $3 when on discount in Coles.

  • Was keen until I saw the ingredients…

    • +1

Which one are you worried about?
      - Sodium caseinate is found in cow and human milk
      - emulsifier is used to keep the milk and water mixed, otherwise separation will occur. Ice cream, gum, chocolate, infant formula have emulsifiers
      - acid regulator is organic ascorbic acid or similar for taste

Dont forget they have another ingredient called caffeine too. Which is oddly not in ingredient list
