        • +2

It’s fun travelling to Japan but not when you live and work in Japan.

@ThymeTraveller: very very very very very true! but maybe he/she is retired!

          • @ThymeTraveller: its no fun living here….but there are slight upsides

            • @Thorn69: Why no fun living there?
I just got back from Japan and I am absolutely pining for the place. I am trying to find ways to go and live there.
Id love to hear your thoughts.

@BrantRaven: Things I've read / been told by Japanese people / seen first-hand:
                - The pay is low and you can only advance with time spent working
                - You may have to work for 12+ hours a day regularly with little/no overtime pay
                - The workload can be immense - 2-3 days worth of work (from our perspective) required in one day
                - If you quit your job for any reason, you are looked down on as not loyal and will often have to start back at the bottom in a new job
                - If your boss asks you to go for drinks after work you have no right to refuse (even if you have plans or work the next morning)
                - You can't take more than 1-2 consecutive days of leave because "you'll let the team down", so going on holidays abroad is impossible for many (also, don't expect to take any leave for the first year or two)
                - If you're female you're expected to retire after getting married so you often don't get promoted

Of course, this list doesn't apply to all jobs, but many have some if not all of these issues. Many workers essentially become slave to their jobs, hence why the suicide rate is so high and the birth-rate is so low. As a foreigner, you may get better treatment, but also will be locked out of many jobs. Things are changing, but very slowly since culture can take generations to change…

There are, of course, many upsides too, but it's very different to what we are used to in Western countries, and many cannot handle it and leave after a year or two.

                • +1

@highwind: for us dirty foreigners your limited to job agency's that will not stick up for you when something happens to go wrong, the average pay is $12 or lass than an hour in japan and its considered good…… your working 50 hours a week and then get slapped by taxes which is quite high at 25% your pay checks monthly so without a side hustle your never going to get by, and mine is proxy buyer,

Japanese will never fire you unless its something serious because its a stain on the companies reputation however if your a contractor they will breech the contract in which they are suppose to pay that full months pay but they wont to foreigners because well who we going to talk to about it they often get away with it.

although most of your examples apply to Japanese only, ive not met many good people in jobs especially "leaders" in the work area that put in the hard work they make you go through.

one thing i have realized is and it may be sexist to say moderately attractive foreign women do get treated much better……while men they will be worked to death and mental illness.

the good thing about japan i find is the health care its much better than Australia and i can just walk in or schedule dental appointments in short notice.

                  • @Thorn69: dental is cheap in japan, but there is health insurance to cover in australia
                    are other health care cheap?

                    • @uccoffee: all healthcare, and specialists that know what they are doing

                • @highwind: Thanks for the great perspective!
A lot to think about there.

          • @ThymeTraveller: I am genuinely intrigued…why do you say it is no fun to "live and work in Japan"?

            DBR

            • @BrantRaven: yeah man its not a good thing to be worked and if your good and finish your work erly in most cases your given more and more work, after that point if you work flow becomes less your called lazy even though your pulling 3-4x the work load then your coworkers. after that if your workload lessens your SV will start attacking you over it, and i told mine to go (profanity) himself im doing the work of 4 people and getting payed for the work of one i told him if he wants me to maintain that load he should pay me 4x after that things just got worse

        • having fun? i work too much to have any fun sadly

          • @Thorn69: it is hard for foreigners in Australia as well, that's why so many proxy buyer in Australia as well.

      • Can you get royce chocolate? :o

    • If you can't find what you want locally, Amazon JP + Shipping forwarder is probably the best for food, though potentially expensive.
Just note that most shipping forwarders in Japan require ID verification (apparently a legal requirement)

  • Wish they sold food too, so hard to find a good place :(

  • +2

brah, the listed price is trippled .

    • Of what?

      • +1

was in japan a month ago and the gundam metal build model i wanted was listed as 25000yen, which currently is showing as near 60000yen on the website.

        • +3

Well yeah that's what happens to rare out of production Gundam kits.

          • @Gehirn: Sorry as in , in the shop it was listed as 25000 yen. And on the website it's almost tripled.

            ( Same shop , suraga )

            • +1

@Fappy Bunny: time does that man , and metal builds are scarce for that reason most japanese will buy up all stock and part them out to different stores so the value doesn't decrease but increases

    • not a good deal at all. Price already included shipping fee. eg. MAFEX figures.

      • +1

Not everything on the site is a deal obviously. MAFEX and other higher end western figures are more expensive in Japan usually. However there are other figures, gundam, etc, that are cheaper than our rrp.

        • +1

Keep in mind these are second hand items.

          • @wesker: Keep in mind these are 'second hand' Mafex figures in Japan. Western figures are sold at a higher price in Japan at retail, Suruga-Ya used does not mean it isn't new, and are in smaller numbers.

And also not everything will be a deal obviously.

  • +1

Damn, haven't used this website in awhile.

  • +4

I've definitely used this a few times, but I feel like this happens more often than not tbh, about every 1-2 weeks almost (often on weekends)

    • I haven't looked in a while but it used to be once/twice a year. You're right though on the frequency picking up.

  • +2

I love Surugaya. I just spent a lot of money there last week in various branches around Japan!

    • +1

Yes indeed. The Akiba and Denden Town shops are must visits for certain demographics!

  • +1

I have never used this site before. I see lots of used items. Is it like the Gumtree or is it an incorrect translation? There is no picture of used condition.

    • +1

In Japan you can sell pretty much anything to Surugaya so used really means second-hand, but in most cases the item still has original packaging or is unassembled, in the case of model kits.

      • Oh. Great. I will try one and see how it comes as it is a free shipping now. Thanks.

      • +3

Yeah, in most cases, "second-hand" just means "not from the retailer" and 90% of the things I've bought are either new, or indistinguishable from new. I bought a couple of hoodies that were released a year ago, and they were in the original packaging with the "new clothes" smell still. They tend to be really good at picking up issues if it is actually used, and actually put it in the description (e.g. small stain, etc).
One thing is pretty much all of the website is machine translated, so you have to know the Google translate word for what you're looking for. E.g., "Klee" from Genshin Impact is "Clay" machine translated from the Japanese name, "ku-re—"

    • +5

It's more like a pawn shop. The condition should be described with a grade, with more details in the description if there's a specific issue.
I think their standards for used items are WAY higher than what you'd expect here, like near pristine items marked B because the corner of the cardboard box is a little bent.
      YMMV of course.

  • +1

If people are after good try the Japanese food wholesalers here - they generally sell to the public.

    • +1

is "here" supposed to be a link? It's not.

      • Daiso has some food.
In Sydney J-top has more options.

        • Yeah I've been to daiso when I can, but I have no good japanese places near me :(

          • @SuBw00FeR: Many Korean supermarkets have Japanese products too.

      • +1

There are a few online stores that I have used (not affiliated) that sell Japanese groceries:

        https://www.jundirect.com.au/
        https://ichibajunction.com.au/

I know you're not in Brisbane/Gold Coast area but there are physical stores:
        https://genkimart.com.au/
        https://www.junpacific.com/fujimartbri/

I think in Sydney area there's Tokyo Mart but I've never been.

        • Ichiba also located in Adelaide at Wingfield.

          There's also

          J Top (Sydney)
          JFC (Australia wide)

There are more but depends on ease, location and what you're after.

    • Any suggestions for wholesalers?

  • did they always have the 500 yen commission or is that new?

    • +1

Bought from them in 2023, and it was there back then

  • +2

Oh, this is great. I've never seen this site before, but was able to pick up the new Ace Attorney games and Ghost Trick for a fraction of Play-Asia/eBay prices.

    Thanks muchly!

    • They are the same price as here (~$70), at least for the Switch version :(

      • I got the PS4 versions of Ace Attorney 4-6 and Ghost Trick Puzzle Box edition for a total of about $110. Switch was, as you noted, a bit more expensive.

        • Those games I assume Japanese subtitles and voice only right no English at all!?

          • @neonlight: Ace Attorney definitely comes with a choice of language. I think Ghost Trick does too!

  • Thank you!! I got some anime merch that isn't sold anymore. Some of the items are hella marked up, but some listings have the original price displayed (which are accurate from what I've seen), so at least you know how high the mark up is.

  • I bought a small figurine from these guys some months back. It was no more than about 7cm tall, but for some reason they had it shipped in a massive box compared to how big the figure was. There wasn't any protective material inside or anything, just the figure in a bag taped to the bottom of the box. I'm sure anyone handling the package thought I was sent an empty box with how light it was. The figure was in perfect condition though, it just seems really weird that they shipped it like that.

    • +2

A lot of these places use boxes provided from the post offices so that's why. Doesn't explain the lack of protective material though.

      • The box had suruga-ya branding printed all over it, so I dunno.

  • +3

Thanks for the post, not sure what happened but I'm down $160.

    • Similar here, no regrets!

  • +1

Would be nice if i could get coco curry, miss that stuff.

  • Cheers OP! Anyone have history with buying CDs and can comment on their experience with shrink wrap & obi still being in tact? If not, what's the condition like?

    • +2

The JP version of the site will tell you the condition of everything, what is included, which store, etc. As you can see though the global site doesnt. If it says used it probably wont have original shrink wrap, but they do re-wrap everything in store. I can say though everything I have bought in person at Suruga-Ya has been in great condition. I have bought laserdiscs and other old things with their obis still attached. Unfortunately though you can't know for sure if it will be.

      • +1

Absolutely perfect answer, might pull the trigger on some doujin stuff then. Cheers mate!

      • Any particular local store that was good? I see there's a heap in Akihabara that I'll check out.

        • Generally the ones outside areas like Akihabara, DenDen, etc are cheaper and may have a a more diverse range, but wont be as heavily stocked on recent items like those stores.

Akihabara's Surugaya stores focus more on a specific range. A store may carry just video games or tcg/board games.

          • @Gehirn: Akihabara certainly gets the tourist tax. When I raid Janpara and Dospara for parts the further from Tokyo the better. Perhaps their Yokohama store might be good.

    • -1

      what CD to buy?

    • +3

I bought a cd from an obscure band and it came in a box with about 5 air bags to protect it

It was sealed, but didn't seem like factory sealed resealed

Cd had all the contents and in perfect condition.

    • Replying too late but oh well: have bought ~5 CDs (games and music), all arrived complete and in near perfect condition, most were not wrapped.
I hope you pulled the trigger!

  • +2

Free shipping is fantastic. I was looking to purchase a smallish item from an American seller but they wanted $40 USD shipping to Australia. PASS.

  • +1

Thanks OP, remembered this post just in time and ordered 10min before it ended, very excited.
Second order from this site. All the "used" stuff from my first order was in almost perfect condition.

  • Gah! It ended before the end of the day. Damn it.

    • It'll come back around soon. They have been doing these campaigns pretty frequently these past few months

  • +1

Free shipping is now back on until 30/4 18:00 (JST)

  • Are people paying via CC or PayPal?

I tried via CC, but the order got cancelled. They suggest re-ordering using PayPal, but I'm unable to access my account. For people who used PayPal, does it require an account, or can you just do a CC payment without one?

Searching around, I found this person also had their CC order cancelled, so at least I'm not alone here.

In the cancellation email, they mentioned their next free shipping period:
10:00 on 5/4/2023 (Sat.) to 18:00 on 5/7/2024 (Tue.) (JST)

    • +1

I used paypal, but it was through my account.

    • +1

I paid using CC and my order went through alright, maybe your order got cancelled because they didn’t have enough stock?

      • +1

Thanks for the info. They stated it was likely due to risk factors and not stock.

I had actually made two orders, with the same card, address etc. The first one got cancelled, but the second one succeeded. The only significant difference I can think of is that the first was around $400 and second around $70, so maybe the "high value" risk factor kicked in for the first?
(the charge shows up on my CC so the cancelling is definitely on their side)

After the second order shipped, I tried re-ordering, again using the same account, card etc. Everything was still in stock, so no issue there, but the order got cancelled again, even though a prior order succeeded.

Customer support was somewhat helpful, but were unable to investigate the issue. They just suggested I use PayPal instead.

So my theory is that their CC payment processor considers higher value orders via CC to be risky.

        • I see, that sounds more likely to be the case. Hopefully your next order will be successful using the Paypal method.

Anyway just received my order today and notice it’s incomplete (one item missing). Which way did you use to contact their customer support, if you don’t mind me asking?

          • +1

@swanzilla: That sucks. I just responded to the email they sent me, which is from: amazon-us-surugaya-contact (a) a-too.co.jp
            Hope your order gets sorted.
