Recommend Me a (Durable) "Low Smoke" Fire Pit

I'm looking for recommendations for a "low smoke" fire pit that is durable enough to last longer than a few fires.

I bought the Aurus 450 Low Smoke Fire Pit With Cover from Bunnings on Thursday, it had a dent in the side, so exchanged for a new one on Friday. Had my first fire in it on Sunday evening and within 30 minutes the paint on the inside of the drum had begun to melt off.

As such, I'm on the hunt for something that is going to stand up to the task. I've been eyeing off the Solo Stove "Bonfire", which is currently on sale for $484.99 including the stand, but I can't help but feel that there's better value for money alternatives out there. Possibly the KegLand "Smoke Eater"?

Please let me know your recommendations for a 450mm-ish diameter low smoke fire pit (that is reasonably aesthetic). TIA

Get the one Snoop uses https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RdsAR9l_fI4

    • Well I’m sold

With that kind of marketing, I guess I'll have to go with the Solo 😆

  • Is this to warm up a place or are you also cooking with it? I don't mean a whole spit obviously but maybe to roast a fluffy marshmallow or sausage on a stick in the backyard sounds nice.

    • No plans for cooking with it - just general ambiance and some warmth as the centrepiece in a seated social setting. Nothing crazy, but yes a marshmallow on a stick is a possibility.

      • I see, fair, I went to your link and gotta say it looks really snazzy sorry to hear it didn't work out for ya. How smokeless is it really? The ad has it indoors is it really that magical?

        • Once it gets up to temperature, it's basically smoke free. It has a very efficient burn with very little charcoal left at the bottom, which is more or less why I am convinced on this style of fire pit. I don't know about using it indoors/undercover though…

  • If you end up getting the kegland one please report back - been eyeing it off since gen 1.

  • Low smoke? wouldnt that depend on what your burning in it and airflow?

    • More or less, yes. But you'll see this style this style of pit promotes airflow through convection and draws cold air from below the pit

  • Not necessarily a like-for-like comparison but we got the small tabletop Solo Stove Mesa on the weekend. Been using it for 6 days straight for the little one to roast marshmallows.
The stainless steel develops a patina but no unexpected degradation otherwise.

I reckon the larger Solo Stove fire pits will perform in a similar manner. They seem to be the Apple/Dysons of the fire pit world with the cost and accessories.

I'm keen for a Solo Stove Ranger when the price is right.

  • How did you go? Planning 1 myself, getting ideas.
