Help! Negotiating Car Purchase

Hey, all.

I am looking to buy a used Mazda CX-9. Two options in my area:
1. Azami FWD
2. Azami AWD

Both in fairly good shape. The AWD is in red color while FWD in blue, which I prefer, but it's not a big deal.
The AWD's leather seats are in a slightly better shape + it's AWD which gives me a bit more of a feeling of security.

The FWD sells for 47k, the AWD for 47,880.

The dealer for FWD is open to negotiating things a bit, and I assume the seller for the AWD is too.

How much can I negotiate for here? Can I get a couple of k's off? Can I get a good set of new tires? What are your thoughts?

Cheers!

  • You can try… but since you're asking here, I don't think you'll be particularly successful.

It really depends on how much they bought the car for and how desperate they are to sell…

    • I beg to differ
OP is looking at used cars. Not new cars.

Bottom line is that it costs nothing to try and nothing to lose.
Id be offering $40K and work from there

Go with the dealer that gives OP the best deal

      And dont worry
There is plenty of margin to play with in cars

Lol you wouldn't be buying a car then…

I don’t know how I never thought of that. Solved!

and I assume the seller for the AWD is too.

    Don't assume anything

As mentioned above, depends how much they paid for it, how long it's been sitting around for etc.

Don't chase the cheapest on Carsales and expect a large discount

    • Agree ive seen used cars priced "the wrong way" before too. Eg more kms or older model at gigher price. Asked the sales rep and got a shrug of shoulders.

Can I get a good set of new tires

I read all the way to here then realised you are in North America. Sorry I can't help.

    • Not at all! Located in Melbourne.

In that case. Go the red one. Soul red is such an awesome colour.

        • Solid advice :D

        • In that case. Go the red one. Soul red is such an awesome colour.

And don't believe that red cars go faster.

          It's a David Copperfield illusion.

        • I'm a little bit surprised (for no pinpoint-able reason really), what colour is your car currently?

I so much wanted Chicane Yellow for mine alas no one was selling one in manual with dirty high mileage, black sucks ass, like really sucks ass. I was told but I, did not listen πŸ™

          • @[Deactivated]: In case you didn't know, black cars suck. I will never have another.

            • @brendanm: Your knowledgeful ass was nowhere to be seen to bonk me on the head when I made my decision so I concern your opinion invalid.

Like a light shower of 3 drops of water, BAM, stains everywhere, whyyy! 😒

The one thing I would say about Mazda is that they have very thin coatings of their paint.

I found you a 7 seater Camry where passengers don't need to ride in the boot

  • AWD uses more fuel, so only required if you have a steep driveway. Private seller needs to be much cheaper due to lack of warranty.

    • AWD uses more fuel,

      You can switch AWD off.

      • Is that an immediate switch translating to fuel consumption? I was on a docile Impreza previously and driving mostly like a granny and it never occured to me it'd actually save fuel just thought it was a hoon switch :c

        • +2

Imprezas are constant AWD, these Mazda's are AWD on demand.

          • +1

@brendanm: Oh nevermind then I must've mistaken that button for something else, I live happier now knowing there was nothing I could do! You've redeemed yourself, I like you once again.

              @[Deactivated]: You always liked.me, I'm a charismatic guy.

Edit - back in ye olden days, the early automatic Subarus had a "fwd" fuse holder. If you put a fuse in it, it made it front wheel drive only.

@brendanm: Did baby Jesus come tap you on your shoulder to mess with me today? Which part of I don't wanna hear nothing about it for now and forever do you not understand!

I only ever had one experience with Subaru and it was the Impreza, was during early Covid times and I just sold the bike so it was back to the car again, wasn't wealthy enough to go down a WRX route and manuals were as an unicorn as ever, was hoping I could jump on board and get a taste of the good life. I love hatches and it did so much I've no qualms but the Impreza was lackluster, though I understood it's not intended to be. The clutch failed on me and it was damn expensive :c

What do you drive now Mr I just wanna piss on rando's parade for no reason at all besides my own pleasure? I love my 370z but all the shortcomings for my purpose ie. space, is really stacking up and given how stable the price is it's been on my mind to sell and get another hatch.

                • +4

@[Deactivated]: Wow that excavated quickly, not sure who's parade I'm pissing on. I think you need a Bex and a lie down.

                  • @brendanm: I'm just kidding my charismatic guy! And I will soon as I make and eat this salad with this avo that refuses to ripen despite all of my efforts. The Aldi ones are a great deal but they seem stunted πŸ˜‘

                    Sorry it came across otherwise!

                  @[Deactivated]: Da fuk…?!

          • @brendanm: Can you actually switch it off? Or is it that you only really turn it on when you use the right boot too much?

            • @Euphemistic: No idea, my level of care for cx9s is extremely low. I imagine it's just controlled by the right boot and if tyre slip is detected

              • +1

You need to pull the fuse.

                • @CurlCurl: I bet it gets quite upset if you pull the fuse.

              • @brendanm: It's just a haldex gen 4 setup with a fancy Mazda name (whatever they call it - iactiv or some stupid shite)

    What are your thoughts?

    Get a Tesla.

    • Where can you buy a Tesla SUV for around $47K that the OP was quoting as the price they are willing to pay ?

      • Bold of you to assume jv can read

      • -1

Where can you buy a Tesla SUV for around $47K

If you take into account fuel savings… Will break even before long…

  • I did some work for a major car manufacturer and importer a number of years ago.

At the time they had around a 100 percent markup on imported vehicles from the landed cost including all shipping and taxes (ie the cost to leaving the dock) and the retail price at the dealership.

So there is a lot of fat in the prices in new vehicle supply chains in Australia.

    • Thank you for the insight! What I did not specify is that I am actually buying a used car. I should have made it clear from the beginning.

  • Carefully inspect the red paint. Mazda have been repainting quite a lot of them - clear coat issues apparently - under warranty.
