What’s there to do in Mumbai..going there for a wedding end of the year for few days…gotta be honest here - India isn’t on the top of my travel list

    • +6
      1. Atal setu. india's longest sea bridge
      2. gateway of india
      3. Marine drive
      4. Juhu beach
      5. shivaji terminus
        6.siddhivinayak temple
      • Legend 🙏

      • +3

Juhu is an absolute dump compared to Australian beaches. Hard pass from me

Marine Drive is…ok. Pretty nice at dusk

The bridge is cool. I particularly enjoyed chilling out at the breakwater at one end of it

Street food tour is worthwhile but youll want a local or a guide

Elephanta Caves is a good tour too

    • Statue of Unity: tallest statue (can travel by train in Vistadome coach)

      • +4

Speaking of Patel, I rewatched Ghandi the other day to remind myself of how disgusting British and American imperialism were.

Eat and drink there. It’s like Melbourne, yeah there’s touristy things to do but the best stuff is the food and drinks.

      Some recommendations:
      - Aer lounge, go at sunset
      - Cafe Madras (it’s cheap and cheerful and the food is delicious, be prepared to wait though because there’s always queues)
      - eat the chaats (as long as the place you’re going to is busy you won’t get sick)
      - Bombay canteen (modern Indian)
      - cafe marina (near Taj Hotel and gateway of India. Again go at sunset)

@ Gunnar: These places are from Mumbai & you do not get idiots & rip offs like other states in Mumbai. People are making obnoxious comments here which keep me disheartened to hear about my birth place which gets targetted every now & then due to uneducated individuals.

    • End of year should be very good weather. check these places:

      some distance from Mumbai -
Matheran - around 80km from Mumbai - the only hill station with no cars and there is a narrow gauge heritage toy train
Essel World - amusement park + water park
Elephanta caves - by catamarine / boat travel
Lonavala / Khandala - hill stations near mumbai
Imagica - enroute to Lonavala / Khandala - theme park

      Within Mumbai -
RBI monetary museum - to see old coins and currency notes of India
Gateway of India / Colaba cuaseway - cheap street side shopping
      Fashion street - clothes shopping
Bandra bandstand - catch some bollywood celebrities (evenings are best)
Marine Lines and Worli Sea face - nice walk along the beach (evenings and nights are best)
Atal Setu - nearly 22 kms bridge on the sea - if you hire a car with moon roof / sun roof you can stand out of the car to video yourself
Dharavi - Asia's largest slum - you will get some authentic and cheap leather goods
      Helicopter tours

I wish someone had told me at the time not to bother going there as a woman." Source.

Please don't travel to India unless you're part of a large group.

      • It's a shame they dare to call themselves the biggest democratic country in the world.

Don't worry, the way it's going, it will be a dictatorship in no time

          • @deathjr: But it's still our ally and we can buy cheap Russian oil via this friend of Australia?

@tik tok: You could watch a bunch of videos here

              https://www.youtube.com/@dhruvrathee/videos

              and here

              https://www.youtube.com/@thedeshbhakt/videos

It would be faster than me trying to write up what's been going on in the country. Journalists being jailed, opposition members falsely persecuted, mainstream media bought by the ruling party and only running their rhetoric 24/7, all international agencies including UN have ranked India lower and lower in freedom of speech index over the past decade, the ruling party is full of criminals including those charged with murder and sexual offences, they spread communal hatred non stop so people don't ask questions about the real issues like unemployment, poverty, large scams, etc. and so on….

Oh and let's not forget the friking prime minister was responsible for a genocide in the state where he was the chief minister and he's not done a single press conference or answered questions from the media since 2014.

@deathjr: you look like a hurtful soul with a propaganda on your mind, i can imagine your country of birth just by you comment

                  @crackmind0007: Haha agree

                • +1

@crackmind0007: I am not sure propaganda is needed.

"Modi’s spiritual and political upbringing from the RSS is the driving force, experts say, in everything he’s done as prime minister over the past 10 years, a period that has seen India become a global power and the world’s fifth-largest economy.

At the same time, his rule has seen brazen attacks against minorities — particularly Muslims — from hate speech to lynchings. India’s democracy, critics say, is faltering as the press, political opponents and courts face growing threats. And Modi has increasingly blurred the line between religion and state."

                  https://apnews.com/article/india-election-narendra-modi-hind…

                • @crackmind0007: sure, if your guess was India then you're correct

                • +5

@crackmind0007: I just went through the videos and did my own research and it clearly seems the television media has been bought out by the government and are acting as only a propaganda machinery via which a false narrative is being set and being projected which sadly a lot of people are falling prey to, due to them being fed propaganda from every angle and you seem to be a victim of that as well. All the statements that @deathjr clearly is factual as far as I can see. What is the basis of you opposing it? And also I read about the premier of the capital of India being arrested without anything against him being actually proven. Imagine the Victorian or NSW premier belonging to the opposition party being arrested just before the federal election by the federal government without any evidence by using the state machinery. The entire thought of it just felt crazy to me. And also the fact that the prime minister of India hasn't done a press conference for 10 years baffles me beyond belief. For me India doesn't look like a democracy at all.

              • +3

@deathjr: Just ignore these ignorant souls mate. Facts are facts. You and CptnObvious have given concrete evidence. There are plenty more sources of this happening.
Intl news and YT channels that cover stories like this, when they shine the light on India, it's scary to see how the PM runs it like it was just post British era. India is turning out to be the lovechild of China & Russia.
What's the point of all that wealth when there is still so much poverty, they're building statues, raping womean and tearing down churches and mosques?

              • @deathjr: When I asked for a source, I thought it'd be something more credible than a fellas opinion on youtube! Also would have been helpful if those videos were in English. But while reading the captions an Indian mate chimed in and said the guy making the videos is a typical left wing nutter who doesn't even live in India! I was even asked, if a video on youtube said everyone in Australia is anti Muslim and quoted Pauline Hanson as a source, would that be true?

Looks like you are really concerned about all this - so perhaps going back and fixing it is an option. Regardless, not my circus, not my monkeys. So I will just reserve my ticket so I can eat some good buttered chicken.

            • @tik tok: North Korea is lower than India in the world hunger index.

      • I'm Sorry to hear that but you should always keep in connect with a Indian person who lives here in Australia to help you find the right places & I'm sure you would not be in trouble. There are good places like Mumbai & Bangalore where you would find good people to be honest. North India is full off uneducated people & a big rip off. I had a friend who visited Mumbai from New Zealand & called me while I was there. I left all my work for him & hired him a car & a good hotel. If you try & do everything by yourself in India without a guide you will end up with stupid stories. There is no harm in paying a few dollars to a person who could help you get your journey safe. There are plenty of people who understand English but need more money to survive.

Common sense would dictate to take precautions when travelling in a new country. Travelling with a husband doesn't grant immunity. There was a girl raped on a ministers couch in the parliament! Is that indicative of rapes in all of Australia? I feel theres a bit of India hate going on this thread, so I will leave you guys to it.

  • Make sure to factor in at least 5-7 days of food poisoning and diarrhea. (Not joking, and it's actually worth it tbh)

Dont eat street food, just stick to good hotels and restaurants. You wont have any issues.
