It is an Active card, similar to 7-11, I have always had issues adding them to Apple wallet. I could only work around it by using my android spare phone. Just a bit of a caution.

      • @WookieMonster Can this supermarket card accept refunds? Thanks

        • +2

It should, but I am not entirely sure.

When I had to do a refund at Woolworths a about a year ago onto a digital Activ Visa gift card, I entered the correct PIN, but Blackhawk Network still declined the transaction with error code 04 (refer to card issuer). No idea why that happened.

          • @WookieMonster: Thanks. I was thinking of paying a Milkrun order using this supermarket card but I won't just in case there are out of stock or other issues. Have only done a few orders with Milkrun so not too familiar with it either

            • +1

@trixieb: To be fair, my issue was in regards to a card-present refund transaction in-store at Woolworths, where a PIN was required to authorise the refund.

In your situation, that would be a card-not-present refund transaction (presumably over Apple Pay or Google Pay), so I doubt you would run into the same issue as me.

          • +1

@WookieMonster: Activ Visa GC cannot be reloaded with value, hence cannot accept refunds. It's explained in FAQ.

            https://activgiftcard.com.au/faqs/

            • +1

@delfredo: I think you are reading the wrong FAQ.

There is a FAQ that specifically addresses what happens if you return an item and the merchant agrees to issue a refund:

What happens if an item was purchased with the Activ™ Gift Card and needs to be returned?

Each merchant will handle returns as per their own policies and may issue a cash refund or store credit. A merchant may also choose to return the refund amount onto the card.

I have been able to have refunds processed onto physical Activ Visa gift cards with no issues in the past (where I swiped the physical card on the merchant’s EFTPOS terminal). However, the issue I ran into was on a digital Activ Visa gift card (and I made sure to enter the right PIN).

For prepaid cards, reloading is specifically where you choose to top up the balance of your card from your bank account, debit card, etc. Reloading does not actually include refunds (which is a little counterintuitive), as a refund is supposed to be in essence a reversal of an existing transaction on your prepaid card.

              • +1

@WookieMonster: Thanks for the further explanation. I won't risk it in case there are issues with the card accepting the refund at Milkrun. I will use the supermarket card for shopping at physical stores

    • Been using these for the past few months via Apple wallet with zero issues. What problems are you having?

      • It’s a known issue with iOS, more commonly seen on TCN threads as those deals are more popular. Also seems to be a newer issue, so if you are on an older iPhone it’s less likely to happen.

        • Weird, haven’t encountered any issues at all on my 14 Pro. I go to Wallet, Add Debit or Credit Card and enter in the card number manually.

          • +1

@Chickenleg: It is probably because you have not failed the fraud checks that Apple does when you attempt to add a new payment card. Apple apparently shares the fraud check information done by Apple with both Blackhawk Network and Visa, so I am not sure which party decides to stop you from adding a payment card to Apple Pay.

You can read more about it on Apple Pay’s privacy policy..

I myself ran into an issue once where I tried to add 6x Ultimate gift cards onto the same Apple Pay wallet within the space a few hours; 5 of them were able to be added, but the 6th card kept on returning an Invalid Card error after I accepted the Blackhawk Network Apple Pay terms and conditions.

@WookieMonster: fyi from Blackhawk Customer Service Support Level II last year:

We would like to inform you that we have been actively working on your case. After conducting an investigation with our Specialist Department, we can confirm that we have observed success when our cards are added to the wallet. The wallet provider assigns a score to each individual device based on factors such as the age of your account, the number of cards added, and whether or not you are using a VPN. All of these factors are taken into consideration by your provider when allowing cards to be added to the wallet. Unfortunately, we do not have the ability to modify this score.

For further assistance, we recommend reaching out directly to the mobile wallet provider.

However, we can see that the gift card has already been added to a mobile wallet.

              • @tonester: That fits in with what other people have told me about their responses from Blackhawk Network.

IIRC, someone told me another factor affecting this score was apparently how many steps are recorded on their device.

          • @Chickenleg: have you added more than 10 of this cards?

    • When adding to many Active cards onto Samsung wallet you got decline messages as well. I think is due to their risk control of money laudrying.

Subject to card surcharge at Aldi? which BTW is a sick joke

    • Yes, because this gift card only supports the Visa network, and ALDI applies their 0.5% surcharge to any payments processed through the Visa network.

  • Just got the HSBC card with 2% back on all tap and go <$99 purchases.

Anyone confirm if this is fine to use with Google Pay? Doesn't need to be the actual card?

    • To my knowledge this HSBC card can only be used for a physical tap n go. And for $100 or less.

      • +1

I mean using your phone for tap and pay instead of needing to carry the actual card?

*Edit - nevermind. Got of my ass and read the PDS. Apple / Google pay al good.

        • Yes it works with google pay as well.

        • In fact you'll only get the cashback when using Apple/Google Pay, as that forces the machine to use the Visa network. Cashback only goes through if the transaction is routed through there. Using the physical card it is allowed to go through EFTPOS, voiding cashback.

          • @OZBMate8911: Google/Apple pay works.
But sometimes HSBC cashback itself doesn't work. There are some specific stores where it doesn't work (even some 7-Eleven 's).

          • @OZBMate8911: Wha?? I thought eftpos required a pin? Tap n go being a visa thing?

            • @tunzafun001: Now LCR (Lowest cost routing) is enabled on most terminals it will route the transaction via a method with the least fees (being EFTPOS).

Cards without dual network (look at the back of your card - if it has EFTPOS + MC/Visa symbols it is dual network) can only go through the network printed on the card.

  • tried Aldi a couple months ago and it didn't work

    • I literally used Aldi in QLD yesterday for $30 and it works.
Works on my iPhone every time I’ve used it

  • +2

These are great to just have $100-$200 worth on your phone if you ever duck into a supermarket.

EDIT: these are great to purchase too when Woolies/Coles has a debit / gift card on sale.

    • +1

They're also good for random grocers and Asian markets plus bonus places like Krispy Kreme.

  • +1

    Don't forget the 10 cent bonus 😂

  • -1

I use it for local fruit & veg, seafood, butcher, bakery etc. For major supermarkets their dedicated brand gift cards should provide more discount.

    • +1

Is there an option for >2.25% for Coles gift cards? ShopBack only has:-

      • Supermarket card 2.25%
      • Super Swap 1.7%
      • Coles 0.5%
      • Not on ShopBack, unless ShopBack runs a bonus cashback offer for gift cards.

There was a True Rewards Work From Home gift card that offered 4% cashback on ShopBack and was swappable for Coles, but that gift card apparently disappeared without a trace…

If you look at the discounted gift card wiki page, the highest everyday discount across a number of gift card portals for Coles is 4%.

        • @WookieMonster It is odd that the True Rewards Work From Home gift card simply disappeared within a few hours after posting. GYB didn't reply when I asked (not original GYB).
As I had purchased the card previously, it says 'sold out' in my app when I tried to 'buy again'.
          P.S. I will DM GYB

          • @trixieb: I reckon ShopBack accidentally published the link to buy that gift card in the first place.

Keep in mind that Woolworths has previously told ShopBack it does not want to be involved in ShopBack's gift card offerings, so I did not expect that gift card to last long on ShopBack…

Good luck getting a response from the ShopBack rep!

            • +1

@WookieMonster: It was most likely a rookie mistake as there were staff changes (reduction) recently.
New GYB reminds me of an overseas agent with the copy and paste responses.

        • +1

Thank you. Sadly I'm not eligible for any of the portals with Coles discounts but a timely reminder about this great resource.

      • wait for another deal to stack with westpac/st george/bonus cashback

For example [Westpac] $12 Bonus Cashback with $200 Spend on Gift Cards (500 Rewards, Activation Required) @ ShopBack via App (but make sure you buy it fast when it comes up, if you wait till there is low claims available you might miss out even if it said available when you buy it)

      • It's about the best we can get right now (without needing to be part of a niche rewards portal) until the next Prezzee bonus deal pops up

      • Spend $150 at Myer (on Coles Myer GC) on Amex and receive $15 rebate

  • How do you use leftover small balances on card? Split payments?

    • good self ask/answer :) yes split pay in WWS/coles.

  • -1

I bought one yesterday and added to iOS wallet (it had to be manually entered) and used it at Aldi and Coles. The remaining balance does not appear on the receipt.

    • +1

only store gift card balances appear on receipts

  • @WookieMonster, can we use this card to purchase TCN or ultimate cards from woolies or coles? ta

    • Yes I have used these to purchase Ultimate? gift cards at woolies about 2 weeks ago

      • thanks! is there any limit?

        • +1

Well the shopback cards only go up to $300 value so I just bought 3x $100 cards at a time and did that twice

  • Damn they took it off today for some reason. Been trying to buy some more with my vanilla visa but SB was giving me issues with payment (and I can't add more vanilla visa cards either after adding 5 on Tuesday)

Edit: oh they changed it to 2% now. But I still can't pay for it with my vanilla visa. Purchased 6x$100 yesterday with vanilla visa though.

    • You sadly have to wait for all the cashbacks to be confirmed then you can remove the card and add more.

You are also at risk because SB dont like people doing this so they might block purchases from prepaid cards.

If you feel stuck i would use the vanilla cards to buy other gift cards from Woolworths. Their store cards have a discount via student edge and you can use the vanilla cards via paypal.

  • +1

Looks like they are finishing this deal on 24 August so dont delay

    • that's sad, has been my goto card for coles and groceries….saving $4 every week adds up

  • Update: this card will still be available for sale after 24/8 for a limited time.

  • +1

Now 0.5% cashback, lmfao what a joke.

    • +1

agreed, may as well remove it. Too much of pain and locking into a prepaid card for such low benefits

      • Every OzBargainer should already have the HSBC Everyday Global account tbh.
