Private Extra Insurance Change Advice

Hi all,

I'm currently on the AHM chooseable 50 plan and pay yearly.

I've almost used up my $500 dental limit and have to wait til July for it to refresh.

I still have 2 fillings to be done, but prefer not to pay the full amount.

This is where I need your ozbargain insurance wisdom.

I found on the Bupa website:
An offer to waive 2 months waiting period for dental
https://www.bupa.com.au/health-insurance#current-offers
A a cheap dental extra cover: (with a $500 limit)
https://www.bupa.com.au/health-insurance/cover/freedom-50-ex…

1)
Could I buy the Bupa freedom 50 extra cover for like a month.
Use the cover straight away since the waiting period is waived, for eg next week.
Then just cancel the Bupa cover, after a month?

Please let me know if this strategy will work or if you have recommendations.

Also I found these interesting notes:
AHM limit resets: July
Bupa Limit resets: Jan

So these two should have separate dental limits? If i sign up to bupa, what i used so far with AHM wont carry over to Bupa?

  • What does the PDS state?

they don't mention about what happens if you change providers. No mention about do limits reset.

When did you use the $500 of your current AHM limit? If between January 2024 and now, won't help you switching insurers as Bupa will recognise this spend for their relevant limits. However if some of the spend with AHM was July 2023 to Dec 2023, then this amount will become available for you with Bupa.

They will know how much you have spent and in which period due to information sharing when switching providers.

    • that actually makes sense.

      I used:
      $178.0 from 7/23 to 12/23
      and used:
      $357 from 1/23 to 4/24

So have used up all my $500 dental limit with AHM.

    • but he isn't switching insurers or transferring waiting periods? he is just signing up to a new insurer with waived waiting periods, and claiming with the new insurer only. the old insurer has got nothing to do with it.

The new insurer will ask as part of their application/sign-up process if they had previous cover. If you answer this truthfully, then your history from your previous insurer will be obtained, and limits, expenditure etc will be carried over to the new insurer.

  • If you do things by the book, then the short answer is no.

If you're happy to bend the rules and possibly commit some fraud, then you could claim your general dental work with BUPA or any other insurer that is waiving the waiting periods with general dental work.
