They still need that fast hardware for LLM models, and unfortunately NVIDIA is the king there.

Google, Amazon and Facebook already spend to make their own chips for their private use. This is Microsoft trying the same thing. NVIDIA is also trying to become a service provider, so eventually they'll all be service providers renting out their homemade GPUs. Meanwhile, the actual chipmakers (Samsung and TSMC), will be laughing all the way to the bank.
It’ll be like when Microsoft tried to chase Apple/Samsung in the phone world
