[QLD] Help! Reliable Independent Mechanic Brisbane Area Wanted (Mazda CX-5 Problem)

Hi folks,

We have a Mazda CX-5 (2014 2.2L Diesel) with a problem. Had multiple warning lights on the dash so we took it to the local Mazda dealer who said we need to replace the ABS pump ($2K) and SAS restrain module ($3K) for a cost of around $5K.

Presumably they would be brand new parts. Since the car is around 10years old I wouldn't mind using 2nd hand parts from wreckers or ebay.

eg.

Can anyone recommend a reliable mechanic in Brisbane (we're near the city - Toowong) who might be willing to do a job like this or would I be better off just sticking with the Mazda dealer and paying $$$?

Help! Reliable independent mechanic Brisbane area wanted

What makes you think they will be reading OzBargain?

I wasn't hoping that the mechanic would be reading OzBargain.

I was hoping that some OzBargainers might know a reliable mechanic who would be willing to take on a job like this.

      • Just as you asked in your post eh?

      • Since they did the diagnosis take it to Mazda.
But I would ask for a guarantee that the work they propose will fix the problem.

Problem with going elsewhere is that you are relying on Mazda's diagnosis being correct.
And then paying someone else to do the work which might not fix the problem.

Alternatively get a second option from a good mechanic who has the correct and up to date diagnostic equipment.
Do not tell them what Mazda told you as this might steer them in the wrong direction.

  • If its like the lancer, the abs module isnt a straight swap and needs programming to match… It also needs to be the same specific unit #…
the programming is the expensive bit of the process.

the programming is the expensive bit of the process.

Maybe they can use outsourced software developers?

      • place in Qld specializes in it that I used.. was for daughters car so wanted it done right

still cost 900 with mates rates, and few took weeks.

  • SAS

Get Commando Steve onto it. Or do you mean SRS?

Does it still drive fine? I'd leave it as is.

Yeah man who needs functioning brakes, airbags and seatbelts.

      • How did people survive the 60's?

        • The difference being that this car has it, ergo it is a RWC requirement and is heavily integrated into other functions

    • Drive with potentially faulty ABS brakes and airbags? I don't think so…

There's plenty of cars getting around that don't have ABS brakes and airbags.

  • Looks like both the ABS pump and the SAS module require some specialist programming.

I will probably go ahead with the Mazda dealership.

$5K is going to hurt but the car is worth $15K - $20K and we do need a car.

    Thanks to those who responded…

Have you looked on mazda forums to see if it is a common problem ?

  • Try Matt at Glover Mechanical in Beaudesert. He's a former head mechanic (Mazda Master Technician) for Beaudesert Mazda with many years' experience and knows his stuff. Yes I know it's a bit of a drive from Brisbane, but he's nowhere near as expensive as taking your CX-5 to a Mazda dealership.
